Last Call - River Rok Pics?

Sorry to be such a pain, but the clock is ticking - I've got to make a decision about the river rok interior finish in the next couple of days. I have scoured the internet, but have only come up with 2 or 3 pics of pools with this finish. Can anyone help? Thanks!

pebbletec is not an option? i can't say enough good things about the pebbletec finish and the superior customer care after the sale if you have any problems. :-)

gina171 - unfortunately, no. My pb uses River Rok, which is more like Pebblesheen, and is actually really very nice. I did make some progress today with SGM - maker of River Rok. Earlier phone calls did not yield much info. Today, one of their marketing reps was very helpful, and emailed me many pool pics with different finishes. And, surprisingly, a finish that I wasn't even considering is now a strong contender.

Funny that you responded to this post - I was actually getting ready to reach out to you for advice - you seemed to have very good color sense.

adriennemb, mortar on the bottom of the pond would hold up as long as anywhere else assuming your pond doesn't freeze solid. Cement isn't affected by cold temps, only ice. It doesn't release chemicals at least at any levels any reasonable person would be concerned about. In a freezing climate you do have to design for the top foot or so, the depth you expect ice. You have all the normal options, bare liner, dry stacked rock, etc. It you want to cover the liner my suggestion is to make cap rocks out of mortar. These can be flipped out of the pond in the fall if you like or left in the pond. Since they just hang there any ice behind them push them up a bit but no harm. The premixed mortars of today don't really fail, at least in our lifetimes. If you kept your pond in the acid range, say 6 pH or less, the acid would attack the cement and slowly dissolve it. Cement makes a poor pH buffer so you probably wouldn't be able to measure any raise in pH using normal pH tests. And in 6 pH and less the life of the mortar would be reduced to maybe the 20 to 30 year range. If the pond is in the 8 pH and above range there is very little affect on cement and you can expect it to last in the 50 to 100 year range. I purchased the foam from Frank's Nursery ($8). I had a choice between the standard white and a green foam, I chose the green (12W x 36L x 2 thick). Originally I purchased a floral foam, thinking it would be easier to construct, but it just kept flaking apart and would NOT be right for the tank; even if above the water level. After cutting out the pieces I wanted, I used a knife to bevel (or 45 degree) the edges to make it look more natural. I also used my fingers to "smush" sharp edges I did not like. Next I used a product made for sealing foam, in order to make it smooth and paintable ($3.50 @ Hobby Lobby). I mixed a regular acrylic paint, found in the craft sections of most stores(.40c each bottle) with the special foam sealer to start a base coat. I was leary of using some of the "all-in-one" paints because I could not figure out if they would be toxic, and like you, NOBODY knew. I also kept a cup of water to dip the paint brush in to dilute the mixture; I didn't want to see any brush strokes on the foam after it dried. That's where I stopped yeterday. Originally, I was going to slather on silicone (non- toxic) over the entire surface of the foam in order to seal it and make it safe for the tank. However, when I read that someone was using epoxy, I started re-thinking my game plan. I think I will check out the epoxy; I saw some at Menards. Any particular brand? EVERYTHING I have done so far has been improvisation. I have found other websites that make mention of using foam, but NO ONE has actually explained in detail how to go about painting and preparing the foam for a tank. I LOVE the way the foam is turning out. I have been able to custom design the waterfall and shape everything to my liking. I also love that it does not add any weight. I already have quite a bit of a sand substrate from when I had discus and I have also added lots of large rocks to shore up a "bank" to creat an entry/exit point to the water. I am anxious to finish, as this tank has been sitting for almost a year! I have been very cautious and nervous as to what products I use because I know that amphibians' skin will "absorb" toxins in their environment. As far as mixing inhabitants, well I'm excited to hear yours has been successful! I feel that since my tank is on the larger size, it should be able to handle a few more inhabitants than just a couple fire bellied toads. On a final note, I've posted pictures on other message boards I'm involved in and was wondering if anyone here uses snapfish? Can I post pictures from snapfish? I'd like to share my progress so far...

Hank, I do remember the heat wave of 1980 although I was living in Texas at the time. It was the worst summer ever and I know that I will never forget it. I was in college and working full-time, and I had a car with NO air conditioner. (That was the absolute last car I ever bought without an air conditioner!) My dad had a garden that year, as always, and all I remember about it is that he had a HUGE crop of the biggest, tastiest tomatoes we'd ever produced until the red spider mites got the plants in early August. In Fort Worth we went 69 days between June 23 and September 6 with high temperatures over 100 degrees, a record which stands to this day. We also recorded the all-time highest temperature ever officially recorded in the D-FW area on June 26 and June 27---113 degrees. That same year the second highest temperature ever recorded in Texas was recorded in Wichita Falls--119 degrees. In Oklahoma City, y'all had 50 days of triple digit high temperatures and recorded OKC's all-time high temp of 110 degrees--the hottest day on record outside of the Dust Bowl days. The Heat Wave of June-Sept. 1980 did an estimated $20 billion in damages/costs to agriculture and related industries. In addition, an estimated 10,000 deaths during that time-frame were classified as heat-related deaths including those caused by heat-related stress. I worked for an international airline and I remember that people would walk off the air-conditioned aircraft into the UNAIRCONDITIONED jetways, which were said to be in excess of 140 degrees, and they would collapse right there in the jetway. It happened over and over again. We sure kept the police officers, paramedics and firefighters busy that summer with all the medical calls. I also remember that you just couldn't seem to cool off, no matter what you did, because the nights were so incredibly warm too. I have been thinking along the same lines as you that we ought to have good gardening weather next year. For as long as I can remember, we have often had several hot and dry years in a row, but I don't ever remember having two excessively wet years in a row.....well, maybe in the late 1960s, but I was a kid then, so am not sure the memory is accurate. River White or White Galaxy?

I've been looking at these two myself, and have used White Galaxy on a client's kitchen. I find that River White can have a lot of burgundy spots in it, and it you don't want that burgundy, you really have to carefully choose the particular piece. With White Galaxy, you have to be very careful that it doesn't have too many bit black splotches that look like ink spills. Find a slab source that has a lot in stock, so you can get the prettiest pieces.

hawkfive, what a nice compliment, thank you! i would love to see the colors you are deciding between. sounds like you've already read my posts, so you know i am all for interesting colors. post some of the photos here, i would love to see them. have you chosen your coping and/or tile yet? what kind of look are you going for? natural, lagoon, roman?

i found a thread here that features an OUTRAGEOUSLY cool pool in Louisiana....it will take a long time to load, there are tons of high quality photos and almost 100 entries, so be patient, might take a few minutes. but towards the end someone asks about the finish and someone replies that the beach entry is river rok....maybe you can contact this pool owner and get their advice/opinion on the products.

it's a great pool, get ready to be floored by it!

I'm bumping this thread up in the hope that someone, anyone, may have River Rok pics they can post. Stonescapes is not an option, and PT was outrageously expensive (over $12K). We are on the plaster schedule for the week of May 18th, so this is it - I've got to make a decision - HELP!!!

Hi...I'm the owner of Louisiana Pool mentioned above. The beach is SGM's RiverRok Pebble Beach with mini pebbles instead of the standard pebble size. Not sure what color you were looking for, but this finish is very durable and the only difference from SGM's other finish, Diamondbrite, is the aggregate size and of course, colors. The Diamondbrite has very small quartz crystals that give it durability and sparkle. The RiverRok is available in two different aggregate sizes ("std" and "mini"). We went with the "mini" pebbles due to smoother feel in the beach entry where the water is shallow and there is not much bouyancy to reduce pressure between the swimmer's feet, knees etc. and the finish. The "std" RiverRok pebble size which is bigger than the "mini" was rougher. Both aggregate sizes in the RiverRok are much larger than the small quartz crystals in the Diamondbrite.

Regarding color selection, hopefully between the pictures provided by SGM and the pics of pool, you'll start to get an idea of color preference. My PB showed me a pool they finished with the same color we used for our beach. The entire pool used Pebble Beach and I would say that the deeper water made the color look greenish. I didn't like it in the deeper water but it gave the effect we were after in the shallower water. The color choice is a personal preference and the color will change widely based on pool depth and even different lighting angles throughout the day.

We did SGM's Diamondbrite in the main pool and SGM's RiverRok in the beach 2 years ago and both finishes are very durable. The smoothness will depend on the application technique and is another thread of its own. You're PB may be able to show you different pools to get an idea of color preference and finish preference.

I need some help! we are doing a beach entry and will be using stonescape as a finish. How can we carry the aggragate past the bond beam onto the dry beach? Can I do a screed line and use a colored concrete base? How about using plaster with a polymer? Any advise/experience will be greatly appreciated!
