Folding paper piecing tut

This is different!!!!! I haven't seen this before.

Instead of sewing on the paper she folds the paper back and sews very close to the fold.

It works on this BOM, but I am not sure if this technique works on all PP.

I saw something like that (a different pattern but same concept) on Simply Quilting once. I didn't try it.

How wonderful would it be to have the precision of paper piecing without having to tear away all that paper?!

And what kind of mind figures these things out?!

I just took a class on the North Winds block. The woman who taught it was married to an engineer who figured out how to do it based on 9" half-square triangles. It was so brilliant that you can do the whole thing within 20 minutes without even pinning and not enough time to even have it occur to you that you're using bias edges all over the place. She thinks all quilters should be married to engineers. I totally agree! ...except for having to give up my husband of 40+ years. ;>

Thanks Rosa, think I will give this a try. I agree it would be nice not to have to tear away all that paper, and the pattern would be reusable.

No pics since the results were devoured, but it was fairly simple to put together now that I know how to fold. Before I made one large free-form "pie" but this is so much easier as there's no 1/2 pie left to stay in the fridge!! Take mixed deli olives and course chop into 1/4" pieces. Grate orange peel and add to olives so that the ratio orange to olive is about 1:8. Drizzle with olive oil and a sqeeze of fresh lemon juice if you happen to have it around. Mash a bay leaf into nearly powder and add sparingly to taste. Throw in a few lemon thyme leaves if you have it. Mix and let sit for about 30 minutes to blend. Fill the pockets made with Woody's instructions (I used three layers of phyllo stuck together with just a bit of olive oil and used olive oil to seal the corners), bake until golden at 375degF (it took about 12 minutes). Serve. Enjoy!! Martie I don't know how frozen olives would taste after thawing, but I'd imagine one could freeze these for later use.

I really like paper piecing and have use all the above papers at some time. My favorite is the cheapest copier paper I can find. Like Teresa said I don't see why you would have to see throught it but even copier paper is seen through if held to the light. I fold every line before I start. This gives me a visual on the side for the fabric and helps in the removal of the paper when it is finished. I also use very small stitches. Cathy(woodenzoo), although I have a roll of the pattern tracing paper I have not actually tried it. I think however it would be especially good if I wanted several of the same pattern and sewed through a stack with a needle only technique which someone mentioned above. I have used regular tracing paper that comes in a pad but my experience is when I press it with the iron on each seam it becomes brittle and sometimes comes off the fabris before I'm ready. I,too, think you paid a lot for the paper. PP is so much fun don't let paper be a reason not to do it. At that price I'd be reluctant to do much. Just my opinion. Sally

Hi, Cathy, I am also sending in some entries to this lotto. Sorry - thought I had written before. I will try to send three. Since I am mailing from Nova Scotia, I feel I should make it worthwhile LOL. I finished the first one tonight - my first paper piecing!! And it turned out okay though it did take a long time. I will get the other two done and in the mail to you by May 20th. This is "the long week-end" in Canada - the Monday on or before May 24th is a holiday to commemorate the Queen's birthday. In Nova Scotia everyone heads to the cottage to "open her up". Lately this has become known as the May 2-4 week-end - LOL. With company and all I don't get much sewing done. Thanks for hosting this lotto and for giving me a reason to try paper piecing. goldie

Man, oh man, what a nightmare. The very idea of paper piecing makes my head swirl. I guess I might work up to it in twenty or thirty years....but I'm not sure.

Thanks Rosa, I'll have to try PPing that way. I'm concerned that I would either a) sew into the foundation accidentally, or b) sew too far away from my fold. But if I could hold the line right along the edge of the fold this would be a fantastic method. I appreciate your post.

I tried the freezer paper PP method - ONCE. I had a big problem with the fabric edges stretching as they were sewn and pressed. It was very frustrating. I'd rather use very lightweight paper and pull it out at the end.

Or even better - use a foundation like lightweight interfacing that you leave in when it's done.

I am going to try this method on The Hamptons quilt. The 3 pieces for each quarter are larger so it should not be that much of a chore!
The only prob is I MUST finish some of my project BEFORE I start another!
