new tv cabinet need ideas for accents

Awhile back I posted a picture of my bookcase and was wanting to move my tv to that area. Well DH did it. He took the bookcase out and to our surprise there was a hidden board back behind the bookcase and the space was alot deeper then we thought. He built doors and a pull out swivel shelf for the tv. He still needs to put trim on the door and handles but for the most part it is done. The doors fold and slide back into the cabinet when they are open. My fireplace hearth and the shelf above needs some sprucing so if you have any ideas feel free to suggest.Need suggestion on what to put on the mantel and the hearth and above the tv. Here are the before and after.

I'm impressed!

Are those speakers above the cabinet> Perhaps your husband could put some type of crown molding box above the cabinet to hide the speakers.

Yes they are speakers and I never even noticed how bad those look up there. I need ideas how to make those dissapear.

I'm sorry you had so much trouble loading photos. I wish they'd upgrade this site, but then it might mess things up too so we'll just have to keep teaching each other how to do this. Is there any way you can take a long shot of the room so we can get an idea of space between your TV and sofa? Possibly stand in another room, even up on a chair so more of the room shows. Another way to help arrange a room is to do it on paper first with graph paper on online on one of the many arrange a room programs. Better Homes and Gardens has one that's easy to use. Sometimes you have to resize the furniture they offer to fit your own, but it does help get an idea of where to put things without first breaking your back moving them in real life. Thanks for asking about my daughter. Yes, she got moved in. I'm not sure that she has her furniture arranged exactly how she wants it yet. Actually, she needs to get a few more pieces, but that will take time. Everybody here gave her lots of good ideas to get started. I haven't seen the apartment yet. I hope to visit in the next few months and help her with some of the necessities. One thing that she discovered when she moved in is that the built in cabinets at the end of the hall between her closet (which has mirrored doors) and bath has a slide out shelf, so she is using that area as her vanity area. The bathroom sink is a pedestal, so there isn't much storage. So the slide out shelf with the closet mirrored doors is a perfect spot to do hair and makeup.

Find a piece that is wide/midcentury style and high….a side board would work well. Match it to the cabinets. Keep the color going with new throw pillows. Two a sofa is enough.

If you put molding too close to the speakers (in front of them) wouldn't it muffle the output?

I was thinking that it would redirect the sound upward and then out. They wouldn't need to be completely covered. Just having a bit of moulding above the cabinet to cover the cream wall space in between the cabinet and speakers, might make them less noticeable.

rdsso - The speakers probably are not noticeable within the room. They just sort of stuck out to me, because you are zoning in on the new cabinet.

I thought they were hung with the TV change. Have they always been there? I really wouldn't worry about them.

Also, what is the material in the bottom of the cabinet?

The two side speakers have always been there but the middle one was added when he moved the tv. The bottom cabinets have old tin in them from an old barn.

Brilliant idea-- your DH did a great job;-) How did he get the doors to slide back into the cabinet but still have the TV come out and be adjustable?
Tell your DH mine was impressed with his work!

What is on the other side of the FP? I'd love to see more of the room before suggesting ideas for the mantle, etc. Just wondering how it all needs to be balanced, etc.

I see the inserts now. Thought they were a flannel material. LOL I bet that piece is stunning in person! I'd also like to see the whole room.

Decorpas, the doors slide back with this hardware he ordered on line and then the tv comes out on drawer slides with a heavy duty swivel base underneath.

Oh, thanks- I'll pass that on.

I like the colors in your room and the way you've got the black peppered throughout.

I am wondering about that door to the left of the FP- what is it and is it possible to paint it black to balance out the entertainment center.

In terms of arranging things, you have a lot of great pieces- and it seems like you could group them together around the fireplace in a way that is more impactful. I love the piece you have framed above the FP and I like the red vase with the plant. The other piece on the left side might be nice on the other side- sort of balancing the size of the red with plant with a collection on the other side.

It seems really warm to me and looks like a collection of personal things that are interesting and work well together!

Oh, I forgot the bottom (more ideas)

and on the bottom of the hearth, the plant to the right side to balance out with the greenery on the top on the left and the grey/tin things on the right moved to the left to bring the tin of the entertainment center to the other side...

Love what you/DH have done with the entertainment center. It's by far the nicest home crafted piece I've seen. The barn tin is a perfect touch!

I also love the pieces in your room -- lots of interesting pieces and those candlesticks are JUST what I've been looking for on my mantle. I agree with decorpas that you may want to consider rearranging the furniture to provide a more cozy space in front of the fireplace and tv. Perhaps as simple as swapping the sofa and chairs.

You have done a good job of adding visual interest higher up on the walls-- the higher mantle and beams demand interest higher up. The only thing I struggle with is that it leaves you with an uncomfortable spot between the fireplace and the mantle.. I am not sure what yuo can do there. Perhaps an interesting iron piece? I don't think it needs to be anything too big or heavy-- just a touch of visual interest.

Again.. great job on the entertainment center. I just love it.

Should I have some more greenery? Like on the shelf above the tv. Do any of you photoshop? I am so visual that I need visual ideas. Should I repost and ask for photoshop help?
