Comments (4)Clearly a Commelina, but it doesn't look like the Commelina communis that I've seen, those having longer, narrower leaves that are pointed at the tip, as well as generally being much larger plants than your pictures seem to indicate. A search on the USDA PLANTS Database also shows that Commelina communis isn't reported to occur in California. Only one species is reported in California, Commelina benghalensis, which is listed as a noxious weed by the state of California. So presumably that's what you have. I've linked a web page (from Hawaii) with information about that species, which has pictures showing that the leaf shape matches yours closely. Comments (29)You have a really beautiful home. I'll add my comments, since you are still working on your staging. I agree with Azmom, that there are too many small scaled objects. You can make some of the little things look larger by placing a lamp on top of a large pretty box, for example, or adding a few large plants, like the 5-foot potted palms I saw at Lowes the other day for $10 each. Some oversized pillows would help, or an ottoman. I like to see some greenery in every room. Even silk plants look fine, like a big fern in each bath and something green in the kitchen. Can you pull some of the furniture away from the walls? I would angle the bed out from the corner in #13 to emphasize the nice ceiling, and I'd angle the bed out from the corner in #18 just to add interest to the room. Put the nightstand right next to the bed. The pink room will remain the pink room. Sounds like Jackie Kennedy giving a tour of the White House. The bookshelves in #22 could use some color. They look too empty. Even some books covered with pastel wrapping paper would do the trick. And a few plants there, too. I think the exterior photos are fine. I would remove the names of your children from the walls. You never know who's going to be coming through your house and what information they might want to collect. Creepy, but true. How about substituting some large framed children's art, mirrors, or some floral pictures?...See MorePictures of kitchens w / 3x6 glass subway tiles? Please share!
Comments (13)annanna - can't wait to see the AKDO tiles in your kitchen!!! momto3girls - thanks for posting the link. It was not that thread that I was thinking about, but it looks like the poster in this thread had a similar issue. I wish he/she posted close-up photos!! The tiles looked really nice! klutterkara - I love your tiles. I remember reading your post when you first shared the pictures. Thanks so much for posting again. How did you finish the exposed ends? Do you have any pictures to share? lynda_baker - thanks for the link. I looked through the thread and saw one picture that looked like it had Bianco Romano on it. Nice backsplash! It looked like gray ceramic tile, though. Do you think it is glass? (I hope we are talking about the same picture)...See MoreAnyone feel like helping read a signature? pretty pictures... :)
Comments (24)Flyleft - About your Russian painting. Is there a branch of Butterfield's or Sotheby's in Portland? I inherited a few oil paintings from my parents and didn't want them, so cast around for an appraiser. Found an ad in the paper that Butterfield's in San Francisco was having a big auction of European paintings and was looking for works to sell. So up we drove with two paintings and a photo of a third which was just too awkward to transport if we'd have to schlep it back home. They took the two and set a reserve which was surpassed at auction, yay. They also offered to take the larger one and named the reserve for that one. We came back home and I contacted an antique dealer who'd been after that painting for a few months. I named the reserve, she met it, I handed it to her, and that problem was solved. They were unable to ID the artists but did describe the periods very well. Also brought them an English litho which my mother always thought was from a Claude Lorrain. Well no, said Butterfield's, but it was "in the style" of Claude, and no, they didn't want it. They didn't charge anything for the appraisals. So - if you're ever in San Fran! We will, God willing, absolutely return to the McMinnville area for a couple of days on our next trip, probably in the spring. So if you're interested in gallery-hopping, I would take that very seriously. I have *never* been to a gallery with someone who could talk about art and teach me something! DH always brings along a book to read and confines his remarks to "that's very nice" or "that's pretty strange". Anyway, if you'd like to talk about this and/or the Russian painting, how could I get in touch with you? The link below is to Winifred's website. Click on Portfolio and then scroll down to the swan entitled "Angle of Repose". I think she's just one of many hobby painters who inhabit western Oregon, but I like her work, I liked her a lot, and I LOVE the painting. Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner, is my all-time favorite American novel. So the giclee literally flew into my hands. Sorry to ramble on. This topic gets me going every time!
