kind of OT - travel, Oregon

On Monday, my best friend and I are driving about 1900 miles from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Eugene, Oregon. We're taking I-94 and I-90 most of the way, then I-80 something in Oregon. If anyone has any suggestions on places to stop, we would DEFINATELY welcome them.

And... I'm going to the Sisters, OR quilt show this year, since I'm gonna be... three hours away. If anyone wants to meet up, I'm game!!!

Also, any 'must sees' in Oregon would be spiffy, too. :)

I carry Quilter's Travel Companion with me. I have plotted out route according to stores - DH doesn't mind.

Well....I haven't been there, but my friend says always raves about Fabric Depot, although you didn't mention stopping by Portland...

"Fabric Depot is the largest, most complete retail fabric store in the west. Our 73,000 square foot store includes fashion, special occasion, quilting, and home decorating fabrics. Our Quilting Department has more than 8000 prints, with over 1000 books and patterns available for inspiration. "

Also, if you can go, the area along Hiway 101 (the ocean) around Cannon Beach is a favorite. You can see photos on the web. It is wonderful.

I know Lori (Hornetwife) moved last year from Memphis to Corpus Christi in the middle of the summer she had several brugs plus tons of houseplants. She moved them in a Uhaul. And I think she even had to stop midway for a family gathering. The plants did stress but moved without any major problems. Bad thing about moving plants is you have to move them your self, a moving company won't touch them. I think the key is you will have to stop and take care of them which will prolong your trip. So you have to decide if it is worth the time, effort and money that it will cost to move them. I know what I would do, but then again I am the person that went plant shopping in Florida and left clothes at my sisters house so I could fit plants in my luggage (I flew). It might not hurt to take cuttings and put them in a plastic tote like I saw someone on here do and put in the car with you (move over kids) just in case something happened to the mother plant along the way. That's the greenhouse part of the sales area. Surplus is behind and in back. They also have another sales area with various other types of plants, such as some sedums, shrubs, heuchera etc. It's a very large place. I think they have over 600 varieties of hosta in their catalog this year, and most if not all are also available for purchase at the nursery. They sell over 100 varieties of ferns plus many epimedium. Most of the ferns are also available on site as well. They also have a ton of the newer varieties of hosta in another greenhouse that they'll be adding to their sales area every year. They get the tc from various sources, but Kirk shared with me that it's their policy not to sell them until they reach a certain size. Usually around gallon size or slightly under. OT: Travelling Dogs over 40 lbs

My 90-95 lb German Shepherd typically rides stretched across the back seats (in either an SUV or extended cab pickup). I have in the past used seatbelt harnesses to keep her safe, though I haven't done so recently because they don't work well if you cover the seats with a blanket like I do to protect them. I should probably revisit the practice to keep my dog safe. Thank you for bringing up this topic as I think it's something I should be thinking about. I never worry about her bolting out of the vehicle as it just isn't in her nature and we're very careful opening the door. In a large enough vehicle I have sometimes put her in her crate for the ride. But unfortunately our current vehicles aren't large enough to get her into the crate while it is in the vehicle and she's too heavy to safely lift while inside the crate and slide it into place. (Plus that would make regular pit stops / stretching breaks difficult due to the need to extract the whole crate in order to extract her.) She has ridden in the front seat when she was smaller, but now prefers to lay out. On short trips I often just put her in the very back of the SUV (with seats up) because she seems to like that spot best and it's easiest to get her in and out (with her hip dysplasia and advancing age).

I live near Portland and am not a native Oregonian--been here since 2001. I have found Oregonians to be friendly and polite. The Columbia River Gorge is a must see and there's plenty of hiking. Some of the waterfalls can be seen without a hike. Latourell Falls is one of my favorites. They'll be smaller that time of year because there's probably not going to be much snow melt from Mt. Hood. You could drive from Portland to Bend and spend a few nights there. Bend had been overrun with Californians, so there's good food and lodging there. There's some interesting volcanic landscaping in central Oregon, which I think you'd enjoy being from the east coast, where everything is eroded, geologically speaking. Smith Rock and the Painted Hills are pretty cool. Also Paulina Peak, which is a mountain of obsidian and like being on the moon, and Newberry Crater. I got this from their website: The crater boasts one of the most amazing collections of geological wonders found anywhere in the Pacific Northwest: cinder cones, lava flows, waterfalls, crater lakes, several gigantic obsidian flows, jagged cliffs, and steep yet forested crater walls. All of this can be seen from or encountered on the climb to the summit of Paulina Peak. (It's a short, easy climb.) I've never been to Crater Lake--just never seemed worth the drive. But from the lake you could then drive back up 5 to 42 out to the coast at Bandon. That's a pretty area and a good place to start the drive north up the coast. I haven't driven 42 but I imagine it's a long slow drive, but any drive out to the coast is. I would see the coast between Bandon and Newport because of the tide pools and wilder aspects of the coast line. At Lincoln City you could head inland to McMinnville, which is kind of a foodie place. Then go to a few wineries in the Dundee area, where you're an hour from Portland. While Cannon Beach is a nice beach town (day trip for Portlanders), there's not much between Cannon Beach and Lincoln City. It's inland and there's only the Tillamook Cheese Factory (whoop-de-do), and that adds 1 1/2 -2 hours to your drive. If you do go to Cannon Beach, go to Ecola State Park and take the drive through the forest to Indian Beach. Oh, The Sisters, OR Quilt show -- I AM ENVIOUS! Have a wonderful time.

When I was a kid my parents had a trailer and every year we went up the coast from CA to Oregon for our vacation. Great memories of a beautiful place.

My suggestion is to drive the Oregon coast...it's fabulous...but, travel it from north to south - this places you on the water side of the highway, so you can see better AND it's easy to pull over whenever you want to stop and take in the fabulous scenery!

Definetely try to see the High Desert Museum and the raptor center outside of Bend. It's a little north of Sisters. The Oregon Coast is beautiful every where but particularly due west of Eugene. It's an easy drive maybe an hour but you will probably go there a lot. There is a very active quilter's group in Eugene. I'm not sure how you would contact them but if they are not in the phone book the people at the pioneer would certainly know. I think you will love it here. Good luck.

I can't help with places to stop. I can act like a mom and tell you to wear your seat belt, don't talk to strangers, check your gas, oil and tires regularly, stop frequently to rest, have fun and be careful!

Please DO talk to strangers...this from another Mom. I talk to people everywhere I go, ask natives where to eat, what to see and always get wonderful information and have great adventures! I was once given a guided tour of portions of a castle not open to the public by the Lord who lived there...I was invited to lunch in the Cotswolds by a shop owner.... went through an historic home built by an ancestor - invited by the current owner...and, lots of other fun things.....ALL because I spoke to strangers!
