Mothers Day Memories

I know I've posted this true memory before but I love the story.

The day before Mothers Day, my son wanted to buy me a card. He was about 5 yrs old. So I gave him a dollar and drove him to the drug store. When he came out his eyes were just sparkling and said, Mommy I bought you a Diamond. He wanted me to open the card right away and I did. Sure enough, glued on the front of the card was a genuine fake diamond, and on the front of my Mothers Day Card were the words........

Happy Birthday Sister. I still have the card, fifty years later.

dotmom, I LOVE your story. How precious! I'll bet he was really proud of that card, and probably enjoyed the chuckles later on when you told him the story!

My fondest Mothers Day memories are remembering how proud the kids were to be presenting me with whatever they made in school! I have several sets of hands drawn in crayon, and just recently took them off the bathroom walls (I'd framed them). The kids are now 23, 23, almost 21 and 18!

I was the oldest. I collected money from my three siblings to buy Mom one great big gift. I think I had about $3. I bought a pink rhinestone necklace. Just as Mom was opening it, my brother blabbed out "It's something you wear around your neck!" I was so angry at him. Mom still has that necklace, even tho it's so ugly (pink rhinestomes?) I've never seen her wear it. Yes it was just about 50 years ago...

Jo, you think a lot like me, LadyO.There is a vacant house next door to the lady behind us, and if I knock out a couple boards of my north fence, in the Back40, I can enter a totally new kingdom where hosta would absolutely reign supreme. (I have Regal Supreme on order, BTW) Lots of shade, a swale going through the property, it has a nothing house on it, but who cares about the house anyway..... You can only live in ONE house at a time, no matter how many you own. Rent that house out, put a board over their back door so they only get to use the front yard.....the lot is 300 feet deep, shady, a possible dam could make a pond with a spillway at the end of the swale, then a bridge to access the far side with a riding mower. Only....NO GRASS TO MOW back there. Just hosta. Hopefully in the ground, but we'll see how the experimental driveway bed turns out. Yesterday's Memories is the same STYLE hosta as Squash Casserole. It is broad like it, I'm wondering what a third hosta similar in style could be.....with some color difference. In my garden, I'm thinking Purple Boots, which this year is spreading and rather flat on top too. But I need something that has a different leaf color....elevate all three like they were shade umbrellas for their minions clustered around the pedestal. I just made the connection between honoring something and elevating it....lifting it up above the crowd, even in a football game...a statue in the park...a throne on a dais... an altar....presentation even with food is a significant part of enjoying it I'll get a better picture of the YM with the yardstick today. The camera on the ASUS tablet takes much cooler pictures. .

There were 23 FEMA lots in New Hartford after the flood of 2008 ... people in these homes could either not afford to rebuild or have enough insurance to rebuild or just gave up on another flooded home...it means they took a 'buy-out' from FEMA ...so those lots can never be built on again...this was a 500-yr flood & affected many homes that never ever have flooded...but many of those that took the buy-out had flooded before ...but not on the main levels like this 2008 flood! So, when FEMA buys you out ...say like $25,000 or something I think may have been an avg (I don't know for sure)...then it becomes property of the city but cannot be built on to live in or have a business. The lots we are restoring have been this Vets Memorial, 4 Season Perennial Garden, Town Square Gazebo lot & a Community Gardens lot. We have written grants, raised money ...many of it donations & that's how we are doing it...we are wearing down as it is many retired people working long & hard...but we promised our community that we would have the 3 lots done by 1st week of June for the local yearly 'Beaver Creek Days.' Jeanne, your table is just lovely! The centerpiece is perfect, simple but so eye-catching. And you know that I love the addition of all the white bunnies (and tea pot). I am a firm believer that bunnies go with any and all holidays. LOL. Probably cause my house is overrun with the non-real kind. And none of those in the yard causing mischief, thanks to my life as a city dweller. Sorry I'm late to all the Memorial celebrations. And I never did get out my decor either. I'm going to give myself one more chance...4th of July...and if it stays packed again this year (be two in a row), then it will have to go. New rule I'm trying to enforce, stuff can NOT stay packed several years without seeing the light of day. I need to let someone else enjoy it if I can't. Anyway, I definitely enjoyed seeing your pretty things and am so glad you decorated for "us" here. ;o) hugs, Karen

Dot & Jannie ~ sweet stories ~ made me smile! This is the first Mother's Day without my sweet little Mother. One of my last memories of her was last Mothers Day. Mom and Dad went into assisted living a few years ago in Las Vegas where they retired. My Mom started running away after 6 mos or so and they were both moved into memory care at the same facility. Daddy didn't have to go in there but he said he was married to her for 68 years and was not going to leave her. God Bless him. Anyway, my friend and I went to visit for Mother's Day weekend and we were taking them out for brunch at the golf course clubhouse where they used to live (their favorite place.) Mom's dementia had progressed to where she rarely said anything but maybe a word or two now and then....which never really made any sense. As we were driving over there, I was sitting in the backseat with my Mom (who by the way was very tiny, 63 lbs, and NEVER swore ~ I still have a chip in my front tooth from where she backhanded me with her diamond ring when I attemped to swear at a driver who had just cut me off. I was 37 yrs old LOL) I was cuddling her and loving on her and I told her where we were going and asked her if she was going to have something to eat with us? She rarely ate then too. She looked me dead in the eye and *winked* and said " kiss my @ss." OMG my friend and I roared although Dad was a bit upset that she swore. LOL My little mother ~ my little darlin~ I miss her!

I remember going to Fred Meyers store in Oregon and buying my mom a tin of Almond Roca candy, her favorite.
Most of my memories of mothers day are very faded. I wish I could remember more.

Every year on saturday morning mom would give us 1.00 for allowance.We would run to this store.It was run by some elderly people.We would say ok I have 1.00 wat can we buy mom for mothers day.It was an old place I can still smell it when I think about it,mostly dishes etc.Now that i look back they just wanted to help us because you know you cant get anything for 1.00.Well this year Kennedy was president,mom liked him.I got a dinner plate with his picture on it, they even wrapped it for me.My mother died when "I was 18.I now have the plate,such sweet memories seeing that plate

My memory isn't just a memory but... My DH and I had infertility problems. I had at least 2 miscarriages and ended up having surgery in July 1979 so that I could have a baby. I got pregnant the next month to my doctor's surprise. He did not want me to go into labor so a planned C-section was set for May 12,the day after Mother's Day of 1980. Well, the amminocentsis on the 10th didn't go as planned and had to be done on the 12th so Daniel was born on Tuesday, May 13, 1980. He isn't a memory but I get to celebrate Mother's Day always around his birthday. Now I have a grandson, nearly 11 months old to share Mother's Day with as well.

White flower on many Mother's Days - she was sick in hosp. from when I was abut 6 ... but I wore a coloured one for a few years till she died (of TB) in '42, when I was 13 (I got the call from the hosp.)

They called it schizo ... but I suspect related to post-partum depression, as youngest bro. about 6 mos. when she left.

I have almost no memories of her, unfortunately.

They say that she was a great lady.

Sad to say, not many memories from mom because she did not like any holidays, but great ones from MIL because she just appreciated anything we did or gave her. She always made you or my children feel they were so special to her. I really miss her.

I remember my 5th grade teacher SCREAMING at me for not making a card for my mother. My classmate Jimmy (our minister's son) finally told her that my mother was dead. I still dislike that teacher.

I woke up in labor with our 3rd child the day before Mother's Day in 1979. However, it was our 3 year old's birthday, and we lived out in the boonies where there were no bakeries. I told DH that we could not ignore his birthday, that I was going to bake a cake right away, and if we had cake and presents for breakfast, so be it. I was not going to leave him without the birthday cake we had talked about all week.

By the time the cake was out of the oven, the Braxton Hicks contractions had stopped.

The next morning I woke up in early but real labor, and it was Mother's Day. Christopher arrived about 8 hours later.

My sons' birthdays are May 12 and 13, and my brother's birthday is May 13th too. We grew up eating dinner out and celebrating Mother's Day and my brother's birthday on the same Sunday quite often. And we still do it, and I bake each son his own cake to this day, mailing his cake to my son in NYC.
