Mothers's Day Memories

I know I've posted this Mother's Day story before, but it is so sweet, some may not have seen it.

Son, Scott wanted to buy me a card for the occasion. He was about 5 yrs old. So I drove him to the drug store and gave him a dollar and in he went to make his purchase. A little while later he came out and he had the biggest smile on his face and his eyes were just twinkling. He said Mama, I bought you a diamond, and insisted I open the card right away. On the front of the pretty card was a sparkling "diamond" glued to the front. Also on the front of my Mother's day card were the words......Happy Birthday sister.

A lovely story, Dot. My Mother was born May 12, often her birthday fell on Mothers Day. One year I collected money from my two sisters and brother and bought her the finest "gift": a gaudy pink rhinestone necklace. I also made a "cake" by placing seven or eight Hostess chocolate cupcakes on a plate. As I approached Mom with our wrapped gift, my brother Bill blurted out "It's something to wear around your neck." I was so mad at him! Mom passed January 15 this year. This is my first Mother's Day without her.

Jannie, your story brought tears to my eyes, I hope your precious memories of your Mom give you some peace and smiles, and I bet she loved that pink, gaudy rhinestone necklace as if it were the Hope diamond.(((((Hugs))))

For hot weather plants like tomatoes, you might instead ask whether there is an advantage to setting out plants early. Even though we are having warm days, nights are quite cool, soil is cool, and probably tomatoes will do little growing until the soil and air warm up. Although we're all anxious to set out plants like tomatoes, they really won't grow much outside and could possibly be frosted in the next couple of weeks. Regardless of the potential for frost, I'd say Memorial day is a better time to set out hot weather plants.

Happy Wednesday!! My package arrived from Melody late yesterday afternoon. :) I think when I opened it a CRAFTY EXPLOSION happened, lol! Melody, your package was so thoughtful and so decorated! Every little piece was perfect! In my awesome package was: ~Stickers for the kids. Mrs. Grossman's! I use these stickers all the time for scrapbooking, and the company is right around the corner from Melody! Small world! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THINKING OF THEM! :) ~An AMAZING hand made envelope. So pretty! And a letter inside explaining my contents along with a beautiful drawing of 3 of the flowers that Melody sent me seeds for. SO PRETTY! I'm going to trim it down, mat it and frame it! It's just perfect! :) ~So many seeds! All with red~white~blue seed baggies. Very cute! Melody this pin-wheel is the answer to a problem that my Girl Scout troop was having! We are having a Pincess Dance in the late fall and were trying to figure out a economical craft to make corsages with. Not only does it have to be economical, but the girls have to be able to make it. Which leaves out hot glue guns and more regular craft things. This pin-wheel with the wire can be used as a wrist corsage OR as a boutonniere for the dads...SUPER SIMPLE AND EASY!!!! The girls can decorate them any way they want! LOVE IT! HUGE THANK YOU! ~OH! and lest I forget the amazing package of Ghirardelli chocolates! I am in love with the midnight chocolate...so yummy! Melody, you went above and beyond for my box! Violets with Lavender?

What a lovely way to remember your daughter. I don't think the violets will spread that quickly. We have the old fashioned, purple violets and they like partial shade, but do fine in full sun (at least here in Eastern Washington). I would just check on them a couple of times a year and prune them back from the lavender a bit, if necessary.

There were 23 FEMA lots in New Hartford after the flood of 2008 ... people in these homes could either not afford to rebuild or have enough insurance to rebuild or just gave up on another flooded home...it means they took a 'buy-out' from FEMA ...so those lots can never be built on again...this was a 500-yr flood & affected many homes that never ever have flooded...but many of those that took the buy-out had flooded before ...but not on the main levels like this 2008 flood! So, when FEMA buys you out ...say like $25,000 or something I think may have been an avg (I don't know for sure)...then it becomes property of the city but cannot be built on to live in or have a business. The lots we are restoring have been this Vets Memorial, 4 Season Perennial Garden, Town Square Gazebo lot & a Community Gardens lot. We have written grants, raised money ...many of it donations & that's how we are doing it...we are wearing down as it is many retired people working long & hard...but we promised our community that we would have the 3 lots done by 1st week of June for the local yearly 'Beaver Creek Days.' Dot & Jannie ~ sweet stories ~ made me smile!

This is the first Mother's Day without my sweet little Mother. One of my last memories of her was last Mothers Day.

Mom and Dad went into assisted living a few years ago in Las Vegas where they retired. My Mom started running away after 6 mos or so and they were both moved into memory care at the same facility. Daddy didn't have to go in there but he said he was married to her for 68 years and was not going to leave her. God Bless him.

Anyway, my friend and I went to visit for Mother's Day weekend and we were taking them out for brunch at the golf course clubhouse where they used to live (their favorite place.) Mom's dementia had progressed to where she rarely said anything but maybe a word or two now and then....which never really made any sense. As we were driving over there, I was sitting in the backseat with my Mom (who by the way was very tiny, 63 lbs, and NEVER swore ~ I still have a chip in my front tooth from where she backhanded me with her diamond ring when I attemped to swear at a driver who had just cut me off. I was 37 yrs old LOL) I was cuddling her and loving on her and I told her where we were going and asked her if she was going to have something to eat with us? She rarely ate then too. She looked me dead in the eye and *winked* and said " kiss my @ss." OMG my friend and I roared although Dad was a bit upset that she swore. LOL My little mother ~ my little darlin~ I miss her!

Remember my mother taking my little son, then, to the jewelers to pick me out a bracelet.

Of course, he picked out, back then, a $500 bracelet.

Got a pretty gold one, costume jewelry, that I have kept all these years, with a note on the side when it was bought.

It was a wide band bracelet.

I have one in the 60s I must only have been 8???It was mothers day,I got 50cents for allowance,We ran to this store an elderly couple ran it,It had all kinds of dishes.It smelled old,musty,But we made out like bandits there I guess they helped us get parents gifts.President Kennedy was president,my mother liked him.So I bought a [plate with picture of him on it.They wrapped it and all.I ran the whole way home couldnt wait to give it to her.Its sitting in my living room in the window on a stand.I have to smile everytime I look at it.

My brother was born on May 13th, and so many a Mother's Day when I was growing up during the '40s and '50s was also his birthday. Dad would take us out for a fried chicken dinner at the Original Murphy's Restaurant in Peoria, Illinois, so we could honor our wonderful mother and celebrate the only son's birthday. My brother-in-law's birthday was May 12th. Then decades later I had two sons, one born on May 12th, and the other born 3 years later on May 13th, Mother's Day itself. He was my best Mother's Day present of all!

I can remember one Mother's day I decided that I was going to take my mom out to lunch on whatever day she wanted to go. But boy did I get a lot of grief from my family when I walked in the house without bearing gifts wrapped in fancy paper. I remember one comment...."Geez couldn't you even afford a plant".

Oh Dot, that's so funny. Here's for you and everyone else here who has lost your dear mother and are thinking of her more than usual...today. May your hearts be full of happy memories.
