Nope. I'm not a big coffee or tea drinker. The only "appliances" I took to my college dorm were a popcorn popper, hair blow dryer and small black and white TV. Of course I was a classmate of Fred Flintstone.

I love mine. Its a cordless one Yes, I have boiled water in it and then poured it into a pot on the stove top. I think the kettle boils water faster. It has an auto shut off. I use it every day.

Yes, I have the electric pots that heat up the water and it automatically shuts off when really hot. Then you can lift off the kettle and there is not cord to mess with. I have 3 of them. One is a white one for downstairs and a black one for upstairs and I had gotten my Mother one and when she went to the nursing home I got it back. Mine at the time were only $9.99 at Aldi's. Now I think when they have them they are $12.99. They are the Crofton brand and they have been good ones. They have the window to see how much water is inside and the hinged lid also. Yes they are good for any job that you want hot water quickly, like making up some Jell-O comes to mind.

I have had a white Black&Decker for years, boils very quickly with auto shut off - not cordless though-I don't need 2 pieces.

I store mine in my pot drawer when not in use.

I bought a cheap one but have yet to use it. When I need hot water relatively quickly I use the coffeemaker. Alton Brown promotes them as being an "essential" but I haven't had a real longing for it. Maybe once I try it I'll change my mind but I guess I don't have need for hot water that fast. It's not useful for boiling potatoes or eggs or the like so it's a limited use item and I'm more into multifunction items since I have a small kitchen.

I think it would be ideal for your situation. If you don't really want another appliance, send it back to college with her in the fall. I bought mine off of amazon, its stainless steel. It lifts off the base and the bottom stays cool if you want to bring it to another room. I drink a lot of tea and it is fast and tastes much better than microwaved water or a Mrs Tea pot. It shuts off if you leave it unattended.

Well, they are handy for me as I don't use a coffee pot or have one. I use mine a lot in the winter for hot tea.

I have a Melita Express Kettle. I love it. Much faster than the stove and shuts off when the water is ready. It's cordless too. I just finished boiling water for a pitcher of ice tea. Takes no time at all.

Lisa -- that's exactly what I was thinking - that I don't really have to commit to keeping it. Except that it is not allowed in her dorm room. But there is a kitchen, and it could be kept there for all to use. At the very least, I can just give it to her in a few years -- unless I love it, of course!

I can't imagine putting a pot on the stove to boil.
I've always used an electric kettle. I have a small, corded one. It's used every night for my tea, and for hot chocolate in the winter, hot toddies when one of us has a cold, etc.

I wouldn't be without it.

I'm on my second one. We have a glass-top stove, and it seems to take forever to boil water. I drink instant coffee, and use my electric tea kettle for that. Love it.

I'm with jasdip on this one - I can't imagine using a pot to boil water either. Here an electric kettle is one of the main appliances in the kitchen. Mine is a cordless Kambrook stainless steel and is used every day - many times over.

I,too, have one and LOVE it. I boiled water when Brody was on formula and I use it for tea or for making coffee in my french press.

I store mine in my lazy susan cabinet...but there are pots in there, too! :)

If mine died tonight I would run right out and buy another one without price shopping first. I don't do that with anything but I love mine so much that I would make an exception. :O)

Just a couple thoughts to add on here.

I don't drink coffee, because I don't like it. I drink hot tea, and iced tea, and I am fussy about how it is made. I have had tea made at a friend's home where they heat the water in the coffee pot. Yuck! I boil the water in a kettle, never in a pot, and make the tea in a tea pot, never in the kettle.

My need was not for fast hot water; my need was to eliminate the possibility of a house fire. Seriously.

Debbyga, I have a ceramic top stove and yes, it takes forever to boil a kettle of water; that is why I would so often go into another room while waiting for it, then get busy and forget it.

My Kettle won't be stored any where. It will be used every day and have a place beside my stove.

Wow, I'm 60, and I never realized it was so much trouble, and so dangerous to boil water on the range--been doing it that way all my life.

A question to Maura--I understand your concern about your home, of course, but don't you think it would be more important to teach your daughter to be responsible, rather than giving her the tools to be more IRresponsible? She's got a long life ahead of her. Here's a tip--tell her to set the oven timer (or microwave one, if the oven is in use) for about 5 minutes when she puts a pot of water on to boil. Effective, you already have an oven timer, it solves the problem, and you're giving her a tool she can use the rest of her life. I often use my timers for things totally un-kitchen-related--often have 2 of them going at once. When I put in a load of wash, I set it for 30 minutes so I don't forget to put it in the dryer if I've gotten involved in something and am not watching the clock.
