Train vs. Plane

There's a story at ABC NEWS this morning about how the cost of an airline ticket is about to go nuts, due to the huge increases in oil. The article stated that fuel represents 40% of an airline's budget, which is a fact that surrpised me.

The other thing is, the average 747 gets 10 gallons to the mile. If there are 200 people on a 747, that means that it's getting about 20 mpg per person which is NOT that great. Heck, my Camry gets 30 and that's 60 mpg-per person if I am riding with a friend!

So, my question is, would you rather ride on a train or a plane? Personally, I have such a disdain for flying I can hardly express it in words. Conversely, I've taken many, many train rides and have not had a bad one yet. I love riding on trains and even took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle. What fun!

So, which do you prefer? If trains offered more routes to more places, would you rather ride on a train or a plane?
