variable or 2-speed pool pump
Comments (2)I think we will go with the variable speed pump. Can we then get rid of our (too powerful) Booster pump to run sweep, but only run sweep for 1 hr a day or so? Would that then be 3 power levels needed, low for no solar, med for solar and high for solar with sweep? Does the timer on the pump work this way or do we need to add a controller? pool spec: 17K gal, IG, plaster, DE, flow rate 72, Hayward 1.5 HP, Booster 3/4 HP, Polaris, solar 1 story, 2 1/2" pipe, Santa Rosa CA...See MoreWater Well - Variable Speed Pump Versus Single Speed
Comments (4)FWIW, I've posted here about my experience with my well, very small pressure tank, and cycle stop valves. I may have given the impression that the cycle stop did not perform well, but it did. As it turned out all the problems I had that I thought might be cycle stop related went away when the pump and motor were replaced. I wouldn't hesitate to consider the cycle stop if it were useful in your situation. The small pressure tank provides water for a pot of tea or a toilet flush, but as soon as demand increases very much at all the pressure tank is cut out of the system and the well pump runs continuously until the demand is terminated and the pressure tank refilled. Then the whole works goes to sleep until next time. Good luck, M...See MoreVariable speed pumps
Comments (16)lostinCT...I would recommend starting a new thread with your question and also include pump symptoms (why do you need to replace it). You may not need to replace the entire pump. If you would like to replace the entire pump with a more efficient pump, I would also include in the thread: 1. the type of pump..AO Smith makes the motor on the pump..not the actual pump 2. what kind of floor system do you have 3. what kind of filter do you have (model number if possible) 4. size of pipes to and from the pump. For what it's worth...our pool is 34K gallons and our single 2 speed 2HP pump runs on average 18 hours per day at low speed. High speed is only used for 1.5 hours each day to operate our floor cleaning system. This adequately cleans the pool floor and provides filtering and chlorination for the pool. Hope this helps....See MoreVariable Speed Pump - suggested RPMs
Comments (2)I run mine at two different speeds. I don't know the rpms, flow rate (gals per minute) was my measure. My weekday settings are: 1-3pm (65gpm): high enough to push water through solar heater and run the automatic vacuum. 6-10pm (45gpm): super low, but high enough that I can measure flow rate with the flow meter I installed. Mine is tuned to turn over my water once. I wouldn't run during the day (peak electricity rates) except for the solar heating. On weekends #1 is longer and #2 is shorter (weekends are all off-peak pricing)....See Morencrealestateguy
