Most memorable Mom's day gift

My then husband didn't buy me gifts for mother's day, said I wasn't his mother. Any excuse, right? But one year my kids (preteens) must have talked him into taking them to the store to get me something. I was so happy that they thought of me.

When I opened it up, it was the ugliest pair of pants I'd ever seen. White/beige background, with huge fall colored leaves all over them. They'd no doubt been on a clearance rack from the previous fall. I want you to know that I wore those pants often. I don't think any of the kids realized I only wore them around the house.

One I'll never forget was the year I got a card from my daughter with a note. The last sentence in the note was, "Your Mother's Day gift is in the back." It was a card that had a second "page" and she'd carefully framed my unborn grandson's sonogram. That's how I found out they were pregnant. I cried all day (from joy)!

I still have those felt sachets that the kids made at school for Mother's Day. I find them in my underwear drawer to this day and the youngest child is about to turn 40.

Thanks everyone. The book idea reminded me of something, so I am now on a quest for a small side-gift for her (a particular book she mentioned this past Sunday). Interesting story on the honorarium amount, etc. The church is indeed small. Before this Pastor, the numbers had been steadily dwindling due to poor stewardship. The numbers have been going up since her arrival, but they still have a long way to go numbers-wise and money-wise. So Pastor has indeed been funding the youth group out of her own pocket. She had recently figured that she could continue supporting it for a little while longer and would then need an infusion of cash to keep it going. She had shared this concern with Mom (who for years has been surrogate mom/grandma/aunt to many, many people) some time before her passing. The amount of the check we gave Pastor was (almost*) exactly the amount that she needed/wanted to continue the youth group. *The almost is due to Mom's habits when giving money gifts. She would always write the check for an odd amount (i.e. on her grandson's first birthday he got $101.01, on second birthday he got $202.02) so that it was memorable. We kept this tradition for the check to Pastor.

My son surprised me with tickets to see Aladdin on Broadway yesterday. :) Never mind he's almost 28 years old. He figured we loved the movie when he was a kid, so would enjoy the show and he was right! We did. Afterwards we headed back to the island for dinner in a local restaurant. All in all a perfect day. The only thing missing was my Mom who passed away almost two years ago. I miss her every single day. :) Oh and my memory was jogged about a peach tree we bought the first year we moved into our house when my kids were 2 and 6 years old. Every year we took a picture of the kids in front of the tree until our marriage fell apart. Worst memory? In I should have known at the time? LOL. My son was about 20 months and had quite a vocabulary already. My ex didn't get me anything for mothers day. Not a card with my son's name on it, nothing. I was so mad I confronted him and suggested that the least he could have done was tell our son to say Happy Mother's day to me. He insisted that would be too hard to teach our son. I turned to my son and said, J, please say "Happy Mother's Day." J then said, "Happu Muddah's Day Mommy." For father's day that year, I taught my Son to say, "Happy Father's Day" and found a picture of our son and I snuggling, put it in a cheap frame, wrapped it up, gave it to our son and had our son give it to his father and say, "Happy Father's Day." Needless to say, his father never forgot mother's day again. Too bad it took me another 14 years to see the writing on the wall.

Ooh just reminded me in the mid seventies ( my best guess- 74-76) I saw Patti Smith in some very very small venue which might have been a basement of someplace. She spoke quite a bit and I can recall she said that Baudelaire was the first Rastafarian. It was all over my head, but I knew I was witnessing someone very special. I also remember seeing Bette Midler at the Copacabana maybe a year after I saw Patti Smith. I was absolutely astounded at her energy. She really put on an amazing show and the venue was really small enough to have real banter going on with the audience. She was so sharp and quick- kind of how she comes across but it was so authentic.

We deep fried a turkey one year, by 'we' I mean my brother. He researched the fryers in depth, bought one, did not even think of oil and about 10 PM the night before he and my sisters son drove to every convenience store within about 20 square miles - purchasing multiple 16 oz bottles of multiple brands as that was all they had to offer. I'm the family gravy maker and wasn't prepared for no drippings. Nothing else was ready and brother began to panic, said the turkey was turning into a meteor so we went into overdrive trying to get things finished and on the table. It was very nicely browned and slightly underdone in the center. We didn't deep fry another. One of the tastiest turkeys I've had was a gift from a contractor....smoked. It made for a lovely buffet platter and the best sandwiches ever that weekend. I just watched (listened to, I was busy cleaning the master bath) a program Foodnetwork where they spatch cocked a turkey and smoked it on a gas grill with a wood chip box. It seemed reasonably easy and looked delicious, was getting rave reviews. I may try that sometime (not this coming week)....there were drippings, it was cooked on a rack over a disposable roasting pan of simple vegetables that looked tempting too. Not too many Thanksgivings really stand out. Some of the months my dad was ill when I was a child, he was in the Vets hospital a couple of hours from home. We had long time family friends in that city and were going there for the holiday and overnight. Storming terribly, windy and raining torrents/buckets. There was water over the freeway in a few places and the state patrol was advising turning around. We did, with no holiday food at home and nothing open. My mother had made a whipped jello salad, we had little cans of mini oysters she had hoped to add to the dressing, crackers, soft drinks that were never in the house during a normal week and had a makeshift Thanksgiving picnic in our pajamas in front of the fireplace ;)

My mother took my son to the jewelry store, when he was a toddler, to pick me out a nice gold bracelet.

Of course, he picked out the one with the $500 price tag, (that was 45 or more years ago).

His grandmother convinced him to buy one of a lesser price but nice.

Still have it and have a note with it, detailing the purchase.

That's my more memorable one.

My every day gift is my wonderful son (he's my only). While he was a difficult child, he's grown into a wonderful man. He treats his girlfriend with respect and is a wonderful father to their little girl and her two children.

I could not ask for anything more.

No memorable gifts. I've always discouraged much "to do" about Morthers' Day for me. However...

I did see in this morning's paper an ad: "Get Mom a termite treatment this Mothers' Day....50% off!!!"

Wouldn't that be nice?

For many years on Mother's Day my gift from my daughter was a card with a hand written note inside that promised me a day out once a month with just the two of us enjoying whatever tickled my fancy. I will always cherish that time with her.

My best Mother's Day gift was delivered on Mother's Day, May 13, 1979. He was my 3rd child, our surprise baby and 2nd son. He lives across the country now on the other coast and shares his birthday with my brother. He has grown up to be a fine young man and a blessing to his parents and a close friend to his brother and sister.

I like anything my children get me, but the favorites were probably the homemade gifts. Or the little handful of dandelions that were always hard to fit in a vase. Yea, those were probably the best. :)

SheilaJoyce - we share the same special present. My son was born on Tuesday, May 13, 1980. He is my miracle baby as my DH and I had infertility problems and he was conceived one month after I had major surgery so that I could conceive. Never got pregnant again after that!

Told him today that his birthday trumps Mother's Day cause I wouldn't be a mom without him!
