Pick Your Favorite From 3 Dining Tables Please

I am trying to choose between three dining tables. The room opens to the living room and is about 12x12. Same hardwood as in my kitchen and living room posts. No pics because this is where I have all my Dad's paperwork that I'm in the middle of. :(

The chandy is about 26" wide and does not look as garish as the pic would lead one to believe. There is an angled arch opening to the kitchen.

Relaxed Old World is my goal but I can go a bit more formal, too.

The first two table pics are Hickory White which I really love. I would forgo the white base as I have a lot of black and would do the whole thing in the finish of the close-up. It is 56" with no leaves. We very rarely entertain but we have leaves for the kitchen table if we were pressed.

Next pic is Drexel-Heritage. Also 56" but with leaf. Nice burl and scallops.

Last one is 60" Thomasville. Has a very pretty detailed top with burl but I think the base looks a little ungainly and their quality isn't what it used to be.

I am really leaning toward the Hickory-white. The problem is that I would have to "buy blind". No one has that table on their floor. It is the most expensive by about $600 but their quality is the the better of the three. I have never made an expensive purchase from one of the NC outfits before. Has anyone else?

I've looked on Craig's List for months but find nothing of the style I want.

Generally, I prefer legs to pedestal. Totally agree that the T'ville is ungainly. H-W far less so, but I still like the D-H the best. It will echo the lines of the chandy nicely. AND the leaf would be a big plus for me.

#2 for the overall lines of the table; more interesting base, and a leaf. I made the mistake of buying a 52" round table with no leaves once and it taught me that versatility is always a good thing, especially in expensive furniture. You never know when your needs may change.

I am trying to convince my DH to try the drysink in the corner, but he is sure it is to large for the area. I even printed the photos shown and cut the drysink section and placed it behind the table (which would need to be turned) and it did not look right. The board can be taken out of the table since it is only the two of us, to give even more space. I will keep working on it. He is very tired of the small redo. We have been waiting for a wall unit to house the microwave, which will include a pantry and broom closet since before Christmas. He has painted the walls and baseboard twice, and he doesn't like to paint, but he does a great job. When I get home from work I will show you a valance I now have above the sink. It is a cutwork white that I really like. Does the kitchen window/sink area, and the dining are drapes/curtains need to be the same fabric? Thank you all. jejvtr - for the websites. I will check them out tonight. I am at work and just did a quick check on the HD Forum. We originally had it caddycornered in its current position, but neither of us liked it, but I liked it about as much as I like it now. sheilaaus - I agree that the greens/blues are a little off after living with them longer. I really like the first fabric, too - the cream, orange, rust etc. andee - if I can move the drysink, the wall now behind it would be a great place for the 'twins'. Otherwise I am out of wall space. Jane PS: One piece of advice I would seriously consider giving is to find drapes/curtains you fall in love with and then find the paint for the walls. Paint can be easily changed, but finding the right fabric/drapes has become a nightmare to match the color we chose.

I couldn't take good pictures of my tables when this thread started. They and a bunch of other stuff were jammed into the dining room/entry hall due to work in the family room/kitchen/breakfast room area. Here is the dining room table: It is rosewood from a Scandinavian import furniture store in the 70's. There is a matching sideboard not in the picture. It's style is very consistent with our MCM house. We like the pedestal base which keeps out of the way of chair placement. Also, the base doesn't need to move for the table to expand. It has one leaf in this picture. The second leaf expands it to 108" and without leaves it goes down to 70". The very modern simple thin legs on the chairs have been a problem. If my DH wasn't so skilled at woodworking repairs, they would be long gone - I think each chair has had at least one repair. So while we really like this, I'd look for something more sturdy if replacing it. Here is our breakfast room table (used for most meals): The chairs aren't as consistent with our contemporary style, but the table and chairs are very sturdy. It is oak. We bought it partly because the chairs are very comfortable even though they aren't padded which worked well with a growing family and now with grandchildren. This table also has the pedestal base staying out of the way of chair and people legs and the base doesn't need to move for the table to expand. It goes up to 110" with all 4 11" leaves in. In addition, storage for the leaves is built in under the table top. This one could probably be used for 100 years without needing repairs. We bought it from a local furniture store. It was made by Richardson Brothers.

Ya they're actually 4" in diameter (which is the measurement of any line that goes from one side to the next, transversing the center) Basically if you cut it in half the flat side of the rod would be 4". That's quite large for a rod. Normally you see 2 and 3" rods (they're all measured by diameter. I have to get special rings for these ones because of their size (antiquecurtainrod.com) maybe that's antiquedraperyrod.com....I forget. :o) If someone put a measuring tape around the rod, like you would your waist, you'd end up with the circumfrence of the rod (circumfrance?) anyhoo, a different measurement. Generally they're always sold by diameter though, as are the rings (they'll be listed with the diameter of the center or open part of the ring so you know they'll fit on your rod). They're also measured by legnth of course, and finials normally have their own measurement. You need to make sure your finials are the right size (diameter of the end for your rods. Mine would look silly on 1" rods for instance. Did that help? I think I'm going to go ahead and paint the rods first, then make a decision and go ahead and make the drape I want...see how that flows, and go from there. Part duex of this drama coming soon!

Thugs may show up at garden club sales, but you may also find plants that can be divided or groundcovers that spread in a more friendly way, plants such as Hosta or some of the Geraniums. I would take a tablet or your phone and look things up on a reliable website such as the MOBOT Plant Finder or the New England wildflower's GoBotany or even just type in the plant name and the word invasive or thug to find out if it is invasive in the scientific sense (spreading into wild areas via wind, water, or animals and displacing natives) or just a thug in the garden like your spiderwort can be if give free reign to seed around. I would also encourage you to look at nonnatives since many are loved by insects and other pollinators when added to the mix. For instance many of the native plants to New England where I live tend to be woodland plants since our climax vegetation is forest, and many gardens have at least some sun. Rgardless, ask the folks if behind the counter if they are familiar with the plants you are considering and whether they spread aggressively.

# 2 I love. # 1 is pretty but the detail on the edge is not practical - esp. if you use a table cloth.

#1. I have a 54" and wouldn't want a line going through the table (for the leaf). #2 is second option due to the beautiful base.

I really like #2. Now, we got rid of our round table with legs a couple months ago, the only problem with the legs is that we were limited to only having 4 chairs, if we had a pedestal we would have been able to fit 6.

The table we got rid of has a base similiar to the Maressa pic I posted and we could only fit 4 chairs.

I have the Maressa and I can sit alot of people for dinner, but when it's over (or on a regular day) only my four chairs can tuck under and I have to make sure that the "legs" of the table are inside the legs of the chairs. They always hit and I have to scoot them over.
It's not a big deal but it's something I do every night.
This set is super heavy!!! It will last me a lifetime eventhough the wood floors underneath are ruined.

#2, which happens to be a similar to the table I ordered, sight unseen as well. I have seem other furniture from this manufacturer, and it is high quality, custom made... but crossing my fingers!

(I didn't get the plank top.. which I love, but decided against for practicality - it's our breakfast room table)

Tinker I love your table. The base is so pretty, too. It made me remember that in the beginning I was looking at planked tables. We have no kids so edges and any other form issues don't matter to me. Then when I saw some burled wood tables, I really liked them.

Well mlraff 53, I guess that the two of us are the only ones who picked #1. DH liked #3 at Thomasville so when I sent him this post and snickered, he replied that I could save myself the 38hrs a week I spend on the computer by just asking his opinion and then choosing the opposite.

I love the base of #1 the best, but don't care for the scalloped edge on the top. I would be fine if it were a table in a large entry hall, or perhaps a game table in a family room. But for a DR, I think it would look odd with a tablecloth on, and also not comfortable to be sitting up against the points of the scallops.

Tinker, could you share the manufacturer of your table?

I'm really more concerned about what my eventual table looks like with a tablecloth off rather than on because we don't entertain much. I love intricate edging paired with more simply lined chairs.

I guess I've always been more form before function (much to the consternation of DH, LOL). Because out entry is open to the living then dining rooms, I want to be careful with my selection of a table.

Got stuck on this decision a few months ago and decided to shelve it and get started on painting the house. Now that the painting is completed I'm back to the dining room.
