good fake rock suggestions?

Hi! We have installed a water feature in our front landscaping, and now we realize we need to disguise the electrical stuff.

We need a little weather protection, so hiding behind plants won't work.

Are there any good fake rocks out there? I don't want something so obviously plastic that it shouts out over our real rocks (granite boulders and smooth cobblers).....

I have a pond, too, but I use real rocks in various sizes that I've collected, and plants growing up and over the rocks, cascading into the pond to help cover the edge. I run an outdoor cord to the unit; it's been just fine for at least 16 years. It's perfectly safe.

You might try asking over at the landscaping forum.

A few years ago, one of the posters answered a question from someone asking about what kind of plants to put around a 40 by 40 foot pond. (I guess it was a big yard) I clipped his reply, but can't find the original post:

Before you think about plants and such, think about how a pond and waterfall occur in nature. Ponds are not found above the surrounding grade. You have to give it the appearance of being lower than the surrounding area, or it is awkward. It sounds obvious, but believe me, you will see many that do not follow that simple rule. Waterfalls do not come out of volcanoes either. They flow from between higher ground in a valley that spills over an abrupt change in elevation. You have to at least create an illusion of that or the waterfall will look goofy. There are a lot of goofy looking waterfalls out there.

Your plant choices will matter much less. Rivers and streams flow through many different environments including deserts. The most important thing is that it sits right on the site. If it does not, types of plants will not help it. Placement of plants can create illusions that can cover up other flaws.

A forty by forty five foot pond will be harder to site correctly than something smaller, especially if you have some topography to your site. Why such a big pond?"

Unfortunately, the rest of the thread seems to be gone. Too bad, because I remember it was interesting and educational. It's difficult to make meaningful suggestions without seeing a picture, but I know I wouldn't suggest using plastic rocks under any circumstances. Depending on what you want to get out of your yard, and the pond, there are lots of ways to disguise a pump; try posting a few pictures at the landscaping forum.

If you've never constructed a retaining wall of any kind before, then it might be best to deal with materials that are easy to work with. As a poster above noted, flatter stones, rather than rounded stones, would be relatively easy to deal with, but even there you might want to consult with the folks you buy them from. Look around your area at the various nurseries and stone yards where stone is available. Usually its sold on pallets and can be delivered (for an additional fee, of course). As another poster indicated, type of stone is a choice you'll have to make on your own with regard to look and color. The right or wrong type of stone is difficult to specify on an internet setting, not knowing where you live or what types of stone might be available in your area. Stone type should be based on look you want, color you like, relative ease to work with, and weight of the individual stones (remember you have to pick these things up and place them and turn them and move them around until they fit just where you want them. With regard to the weeps, you really only need weeps in a stone wall if you're going to mortar the stones together. If the wall will be dry set, then the spaces between the stone will be sufficient to allow ground water to drain through the wall. If you are going to set the stones in mortar, then you will have to set weeps between the stones. But on a 15 foot wall, you should need no more than 2, spaced as equally as you can make them, about 4-6 inches above the grade on the low side of the wall. The gravel behind the wall is very important, as well as under the first layer of stones. Six inch minimum (compacted) under the first layer, and 6 inch minimum behind the wall. A full foot of gravel behind the wall would be better, and carry that gravel up to about 6 inches below the final grade behind the wall. As for the existing wall, if you're going to go to the effort to replace it, then remove it completely. You might even be able to salvage some of the old blocks for reuse elsewhere.

Hi Jimmy, This is my suggestion. I've heard about it, but never tried it. Perhaps other readers can offer some insight. First, buy a roll of bubble wrap- the large bubbles, not the small. (You can find it at an office supply or shipping and packaging supplier.) Then find a spot in your yard that is clay and dig a hole the shape and size you want your rock. Line the hole with a layer of the bubble wrap. Mix up some cement and pour it into the hole, pushing it against the bubble wrap. If you want the rock to be a little lighter, your can place a block of styrofoam or other lightweight material in the center. (You can also add vermiculite to the cement.) Let the cement harden for a few days, then dig around it and flip it over. Peel off the bubble wrap and "paint" the rock with sour cream, cottage cheese, or other dairy product. Place it in the shade and the rock with be covered with moss in a month or two. It'll look really cool because of all the impressions the bubble wrap left. Give it a try and send me some photos! I have done both with salt pools. If you use granite or other similarly hard rocks you will not have a problem. It is normally cheaper to use real rock than the prefab types and similar problems exist such as the white calcium line that builds up under hard water conditions. On prefab stone I've seen the color come off trying to remove the hard water deposits. Keep good water chemistry and you shouldn't have a problem. Your PB should be able to guide you to an acceptable rock if he is marginally experienced.

I found a couple good sites for them. I too opened this thread as I need a movable fake rock to cover a large drain in our side yard. I have to be able to move it if we have a huge gully washer rain but in the meantime I want it covered. I know what you mean about setting a rock over the electric...I am not sure that the others who responded understood what you wanted....hope this helps. c

We have one that covers stuff in our front yard (off to the side). Bought it from Lowes. It looks like the middle one in the link Trailrunner posted. I'd prefer a different color. That's the one DH wanted so I left it go. Every person that comes to our house thinks it's real. I think it looks pretty good but can tell it's fake. I believe it has a lot to do with me 'knowing' it's fake. We also haven't even started our landscaping yet.
The ones in the link are good prices from what I've seen. We paid more for ours. Most online sites I saw were crazy expensive.
