Dithering on pass-thru in remodeled kitchen

Can someone help us break our indecision? We are in the final stages of planning a major remodel of our 70+ year old craftsman bungalow. The kitchen area is about 13 feet wide by 14 feet long, but 4.5 of the 13 feet is a "virtual hallway" to the back of the house. Right now the design calls for a four-foot doorway (starting 1 foot from the wall), another four feet of cut-out pass-through (from countertop to ceiling), and then the last four feet to be solid wall with upper cabinets.

We like the way this visually opens up the house, but on the negative side, we will lose four feet of upper cabinet space due to the pass-through. We'll also lose the only wall of the dining room where we could put a sideboard. Also, we won't be able to put anything (like a Mr. Coffee or a countertop water dispenser) on the counter in the pass-through area, and people in the dining room will be looking at the kitchen island (with its cooktop), which might sometimes look messy. On the OTHER hand, it seems like the pass-through will look nice! We don't actually have guests often, so I don't think that should be the deciding factor.

I'd like to know from people who have put in a pass-through in a similar home whether you felt it was a good or a bad move in the end. Thanks!
