Pool Renovation - Placement of Skimmer and Jets

My friend is renovating her pool and the PB has placed both skimmers on the same side of the pool. The PB also placed the jets on the same side of the pool. She didn't tell me whether the skimmer and jets were on the same side but she is extremely worried that the PB is rearraning the skimmers and jets because it is easier for him to do so.

Has anyone ever heard of this configuration? Is this common or should she insist that her PB use a more standard configuration (i.e. jets on opposite sides and skimmers on opposite side)?

This is a subject that I am very passionate about. I had my first i/g pool built three years ago - it's a 19 x 37 oval and the PB built the skimmer and jets on the same wall, with the jets on either side of the skimmer. When I protested, I was told that the jets will blow across the pool, hit the wall and then will circle back to the skimmer; therefore bringing the debris right to the skimmer where it will be collected.

This has turned out to be a crock - all of the debris is blown to the other side of the pool where it all collects, far away from the skimmer. The only advantage is that I can skim my pool basically in one area.

MAYBE this might work in a narrower pool - but mine, at 19' across is too wide to have the current bounce off the wall and head back to where it came.

I have bought one of those old-fashioned portable skimmers used on above ground pools and use it when conditions are windy to try to control the debris that blows in my pool. I have to put a vacuum hose in the skimmer and bring the hose to the other side of the pool and attach it to the portable skimmer, which does a great job of skimming. But when we use the pool, we have to take it all out because it's in the way, and what a PITA it is, not to mention it is unsightly.

So, I said all that to say I would not recommend this configuration. Good Luck and all the best,

It is most beneficial(when possible) to install the skimmer downwind so that the prevailing breeze will naturally move the surface debris towards the skimmer. IMO 2 skimmers don't provide much added advantage in a residential pool unless it is very large. Return line placement should be dictated by the shape of the pool and the skimmer location and the pump size(flow rate).
Return lines placed very close to skimmer openings can work adversely by pushing debris away from the skimmer. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Cindy, the blue tile is in their Richardson showroom and is called Oil Blue Iridescent tile. I think it's also used on one of the show pools at the Richardson office. Still happy with the work and quality, the project manager has been very responsive and has driven out to our house for something as small as a 5 minute review meeting. We did see a couple of pools in person that were built over 10 years ago and they looked to be in great shape (with the except of some which had owner neglect).

mike- If you want to go the simple 2 speed approach to save money, I would recommend at least the 1.5HP 2 speed which will be 1/4 HP at low speed and will provide adequate turns on your pool daily for filtration and chlorination. The 1.0HP at low speed is 1/5 HP and will require much longer run times to circulate your pool. With the right valving, the 1.5HP at high speed will be enough for your spa and cleaner. Also, I have seen 1 story solar panels work fine with 2 speed pumps at low speed. I think mas985 was referring to 2 story solar panels and with these elevations, the vacuum levels can reach the design limit of the panels, but even then, there have been folks on this forum that have successfully used 2 speed pumps on low speed for 2 story panels. Like mas985 says, the vacuum breaker has to be positioned at lower elevations and you should consult your solar panel maker for exceptions to their normal application guidelines. Variable speed will also do the job, but as you said, it is more money to begin with and the payoff will depend largely on your local utility rate. If my utility rate was $.30/KWH, I would have chosen a variable speed pump, but at $.07/KWH, the payoff would be over 10 years. All the above assumes no problems with the 2 speed or variable speed over its life. If the variable speed fails, you are likely looking an expensive total pump replacement. From recent posts on this forum, it seems that at least one variable speed manufacturer will not provide separate replacement parts for their variable speed pumps. If the 2 speed fails, you can replace the parts and be back up and running with a nominal expense. Hope this helps!

Looks great! Love the beach entry, I understand people's concerns but I just wanted it darn it. :) I'm in N. TX also. We got plaster today so I have no idea what I'm in for as for bird poop, but I'm so glad we did the beach entry. :) I love your spill way. Oooooooooh the things I'd do differently. Wish I had that spillway! Your tile and stone looks great. We didn't even consider boulders, wish I had! You got a heck of a deal, my price for a smaller pool, much less decking, with no slide came it at 45k. Granted, that did include a 4k 80' retaining wall on the side of the house that we'll never see, but still, you got a GOOD price. I'm jealous! Can't wait to see your progress. Blue Granite PS is one of my favorites from pics I've seen here. Our PB does stonescapes (bummer......) and I went out on a LIMB and did mauve, Ahhhhhh, the horror! :):):) I think blue granite would be a wonderful choice.

Cascade, Glad you asked. I'm using 3 inch lines for all my main runs, pool and spa. Two reasons: I want the pump (Intelliflo) to run as quietly as possible and my system to be as energy efficient as I can make it. It might be a little overkill but the additional cost is small. I believe I've answered my own questions but would appreciate some feedback. The prefered depth of a return line seems to be about 1 foot below water line. All return fittings that I can find are 1.5" so I plan to reduce at the 90 el just before coming through the pool wall. I still need help with plumbing the main drains. Do I just bring the 3 inch line up from the 90 el and cap it off well above the shotcrete? Or should I reduce there to something smaller? Is this something a plaster/pebbletech crew normally would deal with? Thanks for your help. Waterouzel

The ideal configuration should be to have the returns pushing the water in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion achieved by placing them to flow in one direction around the pool toward the skimmer/skimmers.
