I think that fung sway stuff is crap for just this reason (personally). For gads sake...why do you go out feet first when you die? Because ergomatically that's the easiest way to carry a body, alive or dead on a gurney. In addition if you break your leg or arm at the house, you also go out feet first on the gurney because riding backwards tends to bother people. So you go out alive or dead that way...

I have my bed positioned in the middle of the room, backed up against a cabinet we had built into our bay window. This gives us a great view of the lake and the northern lights at night...and yes our feet point towards the door (though it's a little off of center so really to our left front).

I've had the bed on the non window wall, but Its a bit tight with nightstands there so I haven't kept it there long enough for a picture. And it is opposite the door there so if the door is at all open (we have pets who open and close it) you can see into our bedroom from outside and I don't want anyone to see me sleeping :) I might be nekkie :oP

Feng Shui "rules" are rather fluid, and often one must take the 'lesser of two evils' in arranging a room. The worst bed placement is to have no headboard, and place the bed head in front of an open window.

The head of the bed should go on a solid wall preferable a wall with no windows at all on the wall, and the bed should always have a headboard.

The bed should be put in a position where one can view the entrance to the room somehow so as not to give the feeling of 'being snuck up on'. Yet, one should not be directly viewing the activity in the hallway which would be a distraction. This is very important for placement of a desk in an office ei; no back to the door, yet do not sit looking directly out into the hallway.

Electronics are banned from a proper Feng Shui bedroom. I know that all these things may not be possible in a small home. If possible have electronics in an amoire or cabinet that can be closed at night.

Modern Feng Shui makes sense, such as not having your bed placed under a ceiling beam. It is all about not creating a subtle 'uneasiness' in the room. Having a prickly cactus plant in the bedroom is a no-no. Paying attention to small details like this can create soothing harmony for sleeping or for romance.

It is an art to achieve the perfect room. (I know that some think this is all "silly" and I won't be offended if anyone laughs.)

I prefer to face east while I'm sleeping, but with the door, windows, and tight fit of my bedroom, it is not possible here.

My bed and headboard is backed up to the only solid wall, and faces west. The opposite wall has a window looking out to the sunporch, and on out to the trees. I have a nice view when propped up in bed, even though I am looking through the sunporch to see the view.

We've never had a TV, stereo, or computer in the bedroom. We do have a alarm clock/radio, but I have it facing the corner to so we don't get the light from it.

I break most of the Feng Shui rules -- our master bedroom is in the northwest corner of our house (which faces south) and our bed is placed with the head against a solid wall (and feet facing away from the door!) -- there IS a mirror facing the bed! It is the mirror for my dresser .... sigh .....

BUT -- on the GOOD side -- the room is tidy, organized and clean (which is a good side of Feng Shui for ALL rooms! LOL!) and the radio is kept on the far side of my DH's nightstand AND the very tiny TV is hidden in the armoire. The phone sits on my side of the bed .....

Our bed is positioned under a high window with a french door to the right of it with a completely private view of trees and hills. (We have no near neighbors and are on a hill). The entrance to the room is at the lower right corner of the room so that the primary view when walking in is of the bed and side tables and the art on the walls. At the foot of the bed but about 12 feet away from it is a dresser with a very large painting over it. To the left of that is the entrance to the bathroom. We have no TV, telephone, computers or other paraphernalia it this room, and the side tables each contain a lamp and a small clock. It's a very peaceful room which has three separate beddings and curtains according to the seasons. We like its atmosphere very much, especially with light coming in from both sides and the view from the french door.

I feel that a bed should face the door so that as you walk into the room, you see the focal point. I was just thinking, it's also nice to see the face of your child if they poke their head in to ask a question. I would feel wierd with it not facing the door, I think. Think of it this way- everybody faces towards eachother and the heart of the home- doesn't that sound better than the feng shui warning!

When I arrange a bedroom, I look to place the bed where it can have the best view out a window, but out of any direct morning sun, if at all possible. The next thing I consider is if there's enough room on both sides of the bed to place practical nightstands and lamps. Most of you already know how big I am on PRACTICAL reading lamps and nightstands in bedrooms . . . it's my biggest annoyance with bedrooms (LOL!). I don't follow the Feng Shui principals (no offense meant to those who do), although some of their rules make good practical sense to me. When it comes to the "no feet facing the door", though, I feel the same as Igloo does. I do also think that, if it's possible, the MBR bed should not be on a wall shared with another bedroom that's occupied, unless you have VERY good sound-proofing insulation in that wall . . . for obvious reasons.

What I aim for in a master bedroom is a peaceful, restful ~ and hopefully romantic ~ retreat for two adults. I like tv's inside an armoire, adjustable lighting, nothing cutesy just very comfortable. And, I never put a working desk in a MBR. I personally feel that it introduces stress into a bedroom and, for that reason, I try to keep it in any other room instead.

In our MBR, I have our bed on the only unbroken wall in the room. It has a great view out our patio doors, isn't visible from the hallway when our door is open and isn't on a wall shared with another bedroom. It's also a very peaceful, romantic retreat.

Our feet point to the door....SO What!! LOL, we have what is called a huge tuck-out wall windows (nightstands)on an angle, wall bumped out about 2' and bed on the straight wall between windows, our PC desk are to one side of doorway TV across corner, dresser other side of door of course we have a big room about 16'x20'+

Well, our feet face the door, we have no headboard, and the head of our bed is directly under a window. It's the only wall that accomodates our ks bed and the room really isn't large enough for a big headboard.

One plus, it's so easy to scooch up a bit to open and close the window at night without getting up.

We have our bed to the right (small corner) as you walk in the door the end of the hall. That wall is shared with the office/computer room (that we could always put a TV in - then maybe it would be too loud but not now). The kids are down the hall. To the left as you walk in the BR door is a pocket door to the bathroom and a long wall (back of the WIC) where the dresser is supposed to go but we moved it while patching the ceiling and working on window so right now the dresser with mirror is facing the bed. 2 windows on wall at foot of bed, 2 windows on right (if lying on your back) of bed. The only thing is, the bathroom is on the east side, and if we leave the door open in the summer the sun wakes me up (window over tub directly in front of the bathroom door).

I don't like walking into the room and right into the side or the foot of the bed - I prefer to walk in past the foot of the bed, with head of the bed on the wall farthest from the door, to either right or left, no matter how small the room is. I guess I don't think of beds as focal points, but as private areas.

We do have the computer in our room (nowhere else for it, really) But, it's in a really nice armoire. Not that it's ever shut, lol.
And WORSE, two dog crates. UGH! How I wish I could get rid of those. But, that's not likely any time soon.

We'll be moving stuff around tomorrow. I can just see us getting it all done. Then demanding it go right back. In the end, I'm not really a huge fan of change :)

We actually added two windows to flank the bed on our long wall. The wall needed something (and still needs curtains.)

momto4boys: I have always heard that your headboard should be visible from the bedroom door, which obviously gives you 3 walls to choose from. I, personally, love the look of seeing the bed straight on from the door. I do not consider the feng shui rules when I am placing furniture, so Yes!! Our feet face the door. We do have a gorgeous view when we wake up every morning.
newhomebuilder: I think we have the similar rice carved beds.

If any of you in newer tract homes feel that there is only one wall that works for your bed, it's because developers plan a "bed wall" -- the wall where the bed will go, of course. And, in every tract home I've ever visited, it's the wall opposite the door. Maybe developers need to take feng shui classes :)

I have been known to do things when dh is out of town!!! I guess it's sneaky...but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. He usually loves what I have done...he just can't picture it before. Hang yourself some curtains!!!

I like a lot of the rules of feng shui but also feel rules r meant to be broken. I always decorate my bedroom to be a peaceful retreat: no TVs, no computers, phone turned off at night. Only music. As far as walls and doors and windows: I pick the most comfortable one to fit the furniture in an attractive, uncluttered way. In my new tiny cottage I started out with the headboard against a short wall, feet facing the hall door but found it too cramped to make the bed with the night stands on top of it. I was able to see out my windows into the back yard though so for awhile I liked this. But I now have the headboard under the windows with much more room on either side for the night stands. I didn't think I'd like it but the first night sleeping in a new direction felt great. And that's good enough for me. I also like being able to reach back and open/shut a window or blind from the bed. So far I'm loving it. Now instead of looking out the window down into the yard, I look at the other walls and the art I hung. cool.

Lori, our set up now is just like yours. We moved the bed to that wall, and one of the windows is on that same side.

I think I like it. I would love to ditch my bedroom furniture, but that's not going to happen any time soon.
I'm in need of a second nightstand, as we only bought one at the time. Stupid, huh? We lived in a tiny duplex 10 yrs ago, when we purchased our furniture. And only had room for the one. I recall my mother telling me I didn't need to bother with the other, HA!
We've always had the room set up so it wasn't a big deal. But, now..it's obvious things are a little lopsided :)
