Where do you buy your garlic sets?
Comments (12)This time last year I discovered this forum, took the advice of some of the people here, and ordered from Gourmet Garlic Gardens. I ordered only one variety, Music, and had 100% germination from beautiful big cloves. So far the few that I've harvested have been small, but I'm hopeful that once they become acclimated, I'll have larger bulbs over the next couple of years. Just today, I ordered a mixture of bulbs from the same company. They are a little pricey, but the return that you get over time is so worth it. Good luck, everyone. Comments (8)I dry ours in an airy place, under cover. I tie the greens together in bunches of 10 or so with string, and hang the bundles either in an unchinked outbuilding or under the metal roof of a porch - out of hot sunlight. If you are in a humid area, between 3 and 6 weeks later at most, they are cured. After curing, i cut away the leaves, brush dirt and snip the roots down short. Peel one layer of the garlic's paper away to get that clean, white look. No cleaning water is needed, even when planted in clayish soil. I found that if i harvest my garlics when the soil is quite dry, i get a much cleaner bunch of bulbs. I just wouldn't harvest it when water-logged, but damp has not been a problem. Comments (8)If you have any those "dessicant" silica gel packs that come in various things...shoes, electronics, beef jerky... you can always throw that in a paper bag with the garlic, it should absorb all of the excess moisture. But No it shouldn't mold. I have cured my garlic in a basement where it reaches 70-77F, hung in groups of 10, uncleaned, untrimmed, dehumidifier & fans running, for 4-6 weeks ( a little longer that ya need but ideal temps are 80-86 so...). I then cut off the roots & stalk to roughly 1/4" & 1 1/2" and gently place them in wire mesh baskets in the same room. This is only my third year, i have put back roughly 80-85% in the ground each year. I had some Romanian (softneck) that stored for almost a year. The Italian & German never make it long enough to know storage values. I have 490 bulbs of Italian & 290 German, so maybe I'll try & save some longer this year...it's just so hard! We don't even touch any of the big ones. Anyway, I guess i have been fortunate because i have never had one rot or mold where they have been cured and stored. Good Luck!...See MoreHow do you grow your garlic?
Comments (1)Never planted them in a container. I would not expect them to be a good container plant. If you have access to a plot of ground, plant them in it not a container. FataMorgana...See MoreLoneJack Zn 6a, KC
