problem: bald elbows....on my dog, that is!

Now, one more question about my dog for all you fantastic KT people: My big old dog has gotten 'bald elbows' on his front legs--we have carpeting but it is tight woven so it is probably a bit rough on him, BUT he sleeps on soft throw rugs, bed comforters, sherpa overstuffed doggie pillows, on the sofa, etc.

What can I do to get his nice hair back on those bald elbows?

Things I have tried already: KY jelly, hemmorhoid cream, Burts Bees, vaseline.

I don't think they hurt him...they just detract from his beautiful self!

It's perfectly normal for large older and sometimes younger dogs to get calloused elbows and sometimes hocks. Unless they are cracked or infected they are best left alone. They are nature's protection. The hair will never grow back and rubbing stuff on them may only irritate them. Leave them be. All my dogs have callouses,scars etc. as they age. Means they lived a happy active dog life.

Wildchild could be right, but I'm thinking if they become too dry and cracked a wound could develop, and that might be really difficult to heal. It would seem to me to keep the skin moisturized would be good, but I'm no vet. How about that cow udder stuff--cannot think of the name of it.

Definitely encourage him to rest in soft spots.

I understand completely that temperature and moisture can trigger fungi in the environment - I've been gardening for a while. What I don't understand (and neither does my vet) is how the same fungus, which is not contagious, can turn up on BOTH my dog's feet within a few days of each other. That's the question. My dogs have experienced temperature changes and rain before in their five years ;) Why now? What kind of fungus is this and how did they get it? I have to assume that the fungus came from the environment...fungus doesn't just randomly happen, right? For example, let's say I get athlete's foot. It may be because I was walking barefoot in a shower (hospitable environment), but just walking barefoot in a shower isn't enough to contract this fungus. I am barefoot in my shower every day, yet have never had athlete's foot. I would have to walk barefoot in a shower where the fungus was present. I also realize that allergies can develop at any time. I'm just saying it's not likely it's a food allergy. It could be an environmental allergy (much more common than food allergies in dogs). But again, what are the chances of them BOTH developing an allergy within four days of each other? Allergy was the vet's first guess, with a secondary yeast infection caused by licking the paws, keeping them wet and therefore creating a perfect environment for yeast to flourish. But that was his guess before both of them showed symptoms. Too coincidental.

If you have seen or heard of raptors in your new area, then I would heed the caution mentioned by previous posts and be careful. As a small animal veterinarian, I see the results of raptor attacks occasionally. The worst seem to occur at night, likely from Great Horned Owls. I say likely, because most owners do not see the attack, even though they may be nearby when it occurs. The owl swoops in, tries to take down the small dog, and then is either successful or not. The resulting talon injuries can be significant, but in a dog the size of yours, are usually not fatal. I have heard of fatal attacks of very tiny dogs by Bald Eagles, either from attack or from being carried off. We, too, see many serious attacks by coyotes and wolves, which sound like they would be less of a risk in your new neighborhood. Best advice is to stay with your pets when outside at night, and consider a good yard light to help discourage sneak attacks.

Most dogs reverse sneeze even without anything up there HOWEVER, since your dogs nose is bald Im thinking there is something up there which is bothering her and needs to be located and removed. I suggest contacting a vet who is willing to do a little more work on your dog to figure out what is going on. Hope this gets resolved soon

Funny thing about that Mimosa-my folks had lived in Fort Myers for twenty years when, upon visiting them, I pointed out this neat, puffy-looking flower growing in the turf on some hell-strip by a mall. They had never seen it! I saw it my first day down there! I guess it's safe to say, the world is composed of two types of people, those who notice plants and those who don't. To wit, if you'll allow me to take this slightly further OT- a botany professor who writes a good blog was writing about his first-day students. He would show them a photo of some scene in a forest somewhere, tropical or otherwise, and ask them to write down what they saw in the picture. Almost to a student, if there was some kind of animal in the picture, it got written down. Nobody....not one student....took note of all the plant life in the photo! And this was a botany class. Sheesh..........I don't hold out a lot of hope for our future. In any case, sunshine mimosa is one of those subtropical plants that, when I'm down in FL I like to look at and conjure up the dream of using it in the north here as an annual. Not saying that would work, or that I'm going to be doing it, but just that it always makes me think about doing so. +oM

Our Allie has terrible callouses on her elbows, they get red, she licks them, etc. Vet gave me a steroid type spray for them, but doesn't seem to help much. Don't know the answer.

My mini doxie has no hair on his elbows but they are nice and soft. He stays inside except to be walked. He even pottys in a doggie litter box. (He doesnt like cold or rain) He will be ll this June l0th. I think it is o.k. unless he is younger and the skin is cracking or he has issues with other skin.

Thanks...what a relief that other dogs are 'suffering' the same thing!

He is a big and older dog (103# and almost 11 yr. old) and no matter what HE IS BEAUTIFUL to me!

Just thought IF I could do something about it, I would...I did try the Bag Balm cow stuff and also mentioned them to the vet and he shook his head and said, clean them with peroxide and put hemmorhoid oint. on them if you want to...and that was that!

Thanks again...you all are great for information!

I'll be back probably with another 'problem'---I trust you guys advice!
