would u do a granite backsplash?

wondering if you think that having granite counters AND a granite backsplash is too much granite.

I have a small galley kitchen...painted white cabinets, cosmic black granite

I have a small galley kitchen and I have matching granite tiles for my backsplash and I think it looks great. Some people use matching slab granite for their backsplash. You can see pictures of my kitchen on my homepage or on the Finished Kitchens Blog.

We also have a small, 11' x 11', kitchen. Our granite had a lot of movement, and we felt that adding another element, such as tile might be to busy. We chose a full granite backsplash on the stove wall, and a 4" granite backsplash on the sink wall. The fabricators did a good job of matching the veins, etc., and we were pleased with the finished product.

Put me in the metallic camp. I was thinking a metallic tile, not too modern, but I think sheet stainless also works. I think that you do want something uniform that won't be jarring with the pattern of the granite, but I don't think it has to be white. Here's an image with some different metallic options pasted in. These are all metal laminates from Chemetal (real metal, just laminated on to a substrate). From left to right: Satin golden bronze Polished solid brass Satin smoked chrome Oiled bronze aluminum Brushed black aluminum Satin bronze aluminum Satin gold aluminum Brushed stainless steel My favorites are the golds and the bronze/browns, and I think very favorite is the satin bronze aluminum, which is a close match to your current wall color. I think that puts me and Marcolo almost on the same page.

If you are hardwired 110volt then you (often) have wires coming out of the wall- gets the tile setter cranky. Framed cabinets the wires should be coming through the wall so not a big deal. Most low voltage is typically a non issue - depending on how they run the wires- even then much smaller wires and done properly not a big deal for the tile installer. What's the difference between wires coming out of the wall and wires coming through the wall? Thx.

Thanks for all the support! It's down. I knew I had to cut my losses. Jelly toast, you make an excellent point about the tile sample. If I had seen a larger piece of this tile I would never have purchased it. My sample was primarily white and the actual sheets have lots of warm tan in it. I have five full boxes left over out of the eight i purchased.The granite is much more cool in tone. I'm thinking a neutral gray. I have some leftover gray floor tile that is the perfect choice. Sadly, I called for pricing of this tile in a smaller version and I don't think I can justify the price. I'm heading out now to see what I can find. Expensive mistake but it could be worse. If they won't let me return it I might be able use it down the road in my secondary bath.

I did the 4" matching granite backsplash because I thought it would take forever to chose what I wanted. As it turns out, I "found" my backsplash choices about 6 months later but I'm still happy with the decision on the matching granite piece. Some on this forum will tell you that it doesn't look good to have the 4" piece. I think it's a matter of personal preference. Do what makes you happy!! I liked what svwillow1 did.

The question is not would I do it - it is *your* kitchen! I think that in a small space having fewer elements can help make the space feel bigger, so I don't think that having a small galley kitchen would preclude this choice if you love it! BTW - I love the cosmic black - it is really stunning and could be amazing with a full backsplash. Only you will know if it is "too much" for you. Like chris45ny said - "Do what makes you happy"

I think the reason the OP is asking the question is because she doesn't know what she wants to do so telling her to do what she wants to do may not be helping her too much. Or she already knows what she wants to do but wants to know what YOU would do.

So to answer the question... yes i think a matching backsplash is too much granite but as you can see there are people who see it differently. I find that the same material on 2 different planes doesn't sit well with my eyes.

We are continuing our quartzite up the wall as the backsplash all the way to bottom of cabs. We have a modest kitchen and I really did not too many materials competing with each other - I think it is a clean, seamless and integrated look. My only concern would be if using the cosmic black on backsplash would make the kitchen a little too dark - but if you have good light and lighing (esp undercab) - it prob would not be an issue. Some folks like the backsplash to be a feature, others want it to blend, so just depends on what role you want it to play in your kitchen - star or supporting role? Good luck!

The granite was called "Bosa Nova," but we looked at slabs with the same name at other yards and it didn't look at all like what we picked. In fact the names for various granties seem to change from yard to yard and week to week.

We gave up looking for granite by name. Instead we just selected the slabs we liked, regardless of what they were called.

Why not wait a while before you decide on a backsplash, or none at all. Leave it painted for a while, maybe with some decorative pieces on the wall. I think sooner or later you'll get a sense of what you want or don't want on the walls above the counter.

I wouldn't do it. I like momj47's advice. I think the black with black is too much glare and you can use the space to add an accent color or different texture.

I personally don't like it. I too think maybe you should just wait. What I did was to look at kitchen magazines. Eery time I saw something I liked I took the picture out and put it on a board. After a while you will begin to see a pattern of what you like. Then you can make a decision. By the way it didn't take too long for me to figure it out.
