What do I use where the tile backsplash meets the granite?
Comments (17)OK, I may be dating myself here, but you guys are dredging up childhood memories of someone named Barnabas Collins and reruns of a soap opera called Dark Shadows. I don't have morgue drawers but my college dorm was the Barnabas Collins mansion and it DID have a coffin. If Barnabus is alive today, I am sure he has morgue drawers in his kitchen, too. Any relatives staying with you that you would care to tell us about, Kelly? Does that kitchen serve as a guest room also? :) Sue...See MoreQuick Poll: Full backsplash or short granite backsplash?
Comments (18)From what I can tell, full tile backsplashes in kitchens are a fairly recent trend (with some exceptions -- see the 1928 bungalow thread -- though that was more a tiled room than a backsplash per se). When your corners aren't quite square, it makes countertop installation easier if there is a 1" thick backsplash to cover any gap between the countertop and wall. That said, I agree with the pp's that the short backsplash currently looks a bit dated. That might change in time. After all, I don't know anyone in real life who has put in a new kitchen with no backsplash at all, but I have seen some beautiful no-backsplash kitchens on this forum... maybe that will be the next trend. [grin] I haven't decided about the backsplash for when/if we redo our kitchen. We are old enough and have been in our house long enough to take the long view, so probably we will do something that's either relatively timeless (i.e. white tile) or easily changed....See MoreBacksplash going in. Now I'm doubting it.
Comments (23)Autumn-it is! It's the Electrolux slide in induction with double ovens. Although the 2nd oven is just the bottom drawer, but should still work for cookies, roasted veggies, etc. We haven't really had a chance to fiddle with it too much yet-it was just hooked up on Monday. I'm super stoked about induction cooking especially for the ease of clean-up. This house had an induction cooktop when we moved it, but it was literally one of the first US models available-installed in 1981. Only one burner worked, and not very well. I think the only thing I ever made on it was eggs. I got a screaming deal on this unit from an overstock dealer. It's new, and I probably could not have afforded it full price either. I found the unit on eBay after a tip from here to search there for appliances. The guy was within an hour drive so I talked DH into going to pick it up. Nosoccermom-I like that idea a lot. I picked up a grey as well as white shade. I'm thinking the white may be just TOO much white, and introduce yet another shade of white, but I'll definitely post the photos for opinions. Amanda-thank you! I think you are right that dark would be way too busy. I'll pos pics with white an d gray colors....See MoreGranite Backsplash with Tile BS or just Tile Backsplash???
Comments (6)My granite supplier advised using tile from the granite up (no granite back splash). She could have advised the other way and made a little more money, so I think she advised based on her honest opinion. I also like the "no granite back splash" look better. Just guessing, I'd say the only reason to use the 4" granite back splash would be if you weren't going to use any other back splash at all (a more low-budget option, in my opinion)....See MoreUser
