Hi everyone,

Yesterday was a loongg, and very stressful day. My step-father got his bladder, prostrate and lymph glands removed. His bladder was loaded with cancer. He is now fitted with a ustomy bag.

He was to be at the hospital at 6 am for an 8am surgery that lasted 5 hours. The doctor came out at 12:50 pm and said everything went beautifully and that Wally is in remarkable shape. He didn't even need to go to ICU, but went right into the recovery room.

That's where things went wrong. We kept on asking at the desk if he was assigned a room yet, and 6 and 1/2 hours later he was finally taken to a room!!!! I did grab a fellow who looked like he knew what he was doing and asked what the delay was.

He said Wally had respiratory problems and is still sleeping and they are monitoring him and can give him extra pain meds. He said that Wally woke up in a lot of pain. Well we didn't like that! We were worried sick.

Turns out, when we went in to see Wally (he was awake and talking, which we didn't expect) that he wasn't in a lot of pain, but they accidentally gave him too much morphine, and they were making sure he didn't go into overdose mode, and waking him up regularly and monitoring till he vitals got stable.

Anyway, I'm sure he'll feel the pain today, he was still high last nite, quite funny, hearing him slur his words, and now we march on and get him on the road to recovery and make his transition to wearing a bag as effortless as possible.

Wow, Jasdip, I didn't realize his surgery was so imminent, but glad to hear he came through alright.
Please keep us posted on how he is getting along with his urostomy supplies, etc.

veleen and Vince my thoughts and prayer are with you. Veleen my Mom had the same eye problems be sure and ask your Dr what thing you can get from the government for help with your eyes. My mother rec books on tape as many as she wanted a month they send you the machine and the tapes free and you mail them back free they send you a list of all the books available all cities have this you could also check with you library and they would know what all you have to do to get started. It would be a good pass time for you both and then you could tell us what books to read. You will get you eye drops regulated and they pretty much can help you with the drops but be sure and take them I have had 6 weeks of treatment for my back on a spina table and it has done wonders for my back and also for my husband back. Check into spina tables with your Dr and I think you will find y our back much better. I will keep you in my daily prayers and hope to see you when I come to Westlake OH to see my big Sis I know Donna oh is also near there would be great to give you all a hug in person!!!!!!!!! praying for you now imabest

I have read that they both got infected from another worker. If another worker at the field hospital was not noticeably sick, they may not have been wearing protective gear around them. The CDC is apparently investigating. But for those concerned about this, keep in mind the vast differences between America and rural Africa. The CDC and WHO have said that a big problem is that the people there don't trust these medical workers and want to hide their family members who are sick and take them to traditional healers. All the while, they're caring for them and exposing themselves. We also don't wash and prepare the bodies of dead family members ourselves. There is a big difference in sanitation as well, since many areas there don't even have running water and certainly no hand sanitizer. The flu has killed many more people than Ebola. A lot of us have probably had or know someone who has had the flu, and most people just don't think about how deadly it can be because it's something we're used to. I think that even if a traveler were to bring Ebola to the US, we could contain it a lot more rapidly than they have in Africa. That is because of the cultural differences I mentioned above in addition to the fact that we have modern hospitals readily available, not field hospitals without running water. It is just not possible to have the same level of sanitation in a situation like that. We also have plenty of trained medical professionals who are used to treating deadly things like Hepatitis C and HIV.

She's fine. She and BF dropped by around noon, I gave her the soup, some hugs,my ice bag and ice. She's swollen, cranky (her natural state HAHA) and groggy. But it's over and I saw her and she has a great BF. I'm sure he will give her good care. I did notice a bag of McDonald's food in his car. (Funny, she never eats meat. Does McD sell a veggie burger?) She's going home to her apartment to rest, then back on the treadmill tomorrow-college and work. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

OMG, I love the 'rack'! It very much relieved my compressed nerve pain. I had to adjust my rear view mirror every time I left my chiro! Peppi, keep us informed....we care. My husband opted for surgery when sciatica struck a blow. He was home the same day, walking around with comfort. His surgical wound was kept covered with a 2x3 piece of gauze! I hope that you have access to modern surgical procedures....which can be a much better option than injections.

I'm very glad his surgery seemed to go very well and wish him a good recovery. My dh was also given too much pain med in the recovery room, after they couldn't find the order to continue the epidural. I had to stand by him and nudge him every time he went to sleep because he would stop breathing! Finally an anesthesiologist came in and watched him for awhile until she was sure he was breathing on his own. It was a little unnerving, I can tell you.

I wish Wally a speedy recovery. I hope his cancer hasn't metastisized, since his bladder was so cancer-laden? It is too bad that it wasn't caught in time to save his bladder, but I know from experience that often there are no symptoms of bladder cancer until it becomes crucial. I did not have any pain or other symptoms until suddenly discovering blood after urinating, which sent me to a urologist for the diagnosis. I was one of the lucky ones who caught it before it was too late.

Hi Veta,
It was caught early. Some tumours were found a couple years ago during an examination, and he had them removed.
During his 3-month examinations, they were found again, in fairly quick succession, a few more times. More surgery to remove them.

His doctor suggested the bladder removal, since they keep coming back, and quickly. He sent Wally to a specialist, for a second opinion. He agreed, and said that his bladder looks "very angry". He was scheduled for this surgery, and got 'er done.
