Breast Cancer Awareness Blocks

I know how much you all like to participate in exchanges, and while this isn't an exchange, it is open to anyone. Let me explain.

Minot Air Force Base each year sponsors a quilt auction to benefit breast cancer awareness in October. Together with the Minot Prairie Quilt Guild, of which I am the current President, we solicite quilt squares from military members from the base, our quilt guild, other guilds in North Dakota and the local community. I would like to extend this invitation to you ladies here at the quilting forum as well. Here are the details:

You design the block ANY WAY you want. The finished block should be 12-1/2 inches unfinished in either a pink theme (for breast cancer awareness) or a patriotic theme (red, white and blue). You send me your finished blocks, or a completed wall hanging or quilt and we will put your block in a top with other blocks and auction them off.

Last year we had in the neighborhood of 25 quilts and raised over $8000 to go to Breast Cancer Research. Let me give you and idea of just what the military and local community was willing to pay...Last year's Quilt Guild President made a very simple wall hanging with three squares in a patriotic theme. I think she told me that she had these three pieces with American Flags in them, that she added to with like a log cabin affect. This one particular wall hanging brought in $450! A 12 block quilt was bringing in $300 to $400.

Each block received will be acknowledge with the person's name on a label on the back of the quilt, so please be sure to include your name, city and state. In October, after the auction, I will be more than happy to post pictures and results.

If you are interested in making a block (or two) or a wall hanging or quilt to donate to this cause, I will be taking donations until the middle of August 2007. If you would like additional information or have questions, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will post my mailing address after I get moved into my new house the beginning of May and get settled. I will be in a better position to accept your donations at that time.

I know that some of you will participate and thank you up front for your support.

Lynn,

Are you saying that they would take ONE 12" block and make it into a mini quilt/wall hanging and that might fetch $300 to $300? That's, like, WOW that would be AWESOME!!!

I plan to contribute a block or two!!!!

No, seems to me she said a "12 block" quilt brought in $300-400.

Ruth Ann, a breast cancer survivor for 4 1/2 years but still battling off and on with cancer on the chest wall. My cousins Jo Ann and Carol are 6 and 5 year survivors respectively. All three of us did monthly self-examinations and annual mammograms and had no symptoms until a mammogram showed our tumors so it is so important to schedule them and have them done. My mother was a seven year breast cancer survivor but when it returned, she died within six weeks. My great-aunt Mary was a breast cancer survivor for 60 years until she died of "old age" at age 96 in 1980. Breast cancer is not something to fear. It's something to get taken care of, just like any other disease. By the time this thread has run its course, you will see how many years early detection has added to our lives. We spend so much time taking care of our families that we should take that half hour for the mammogram to take care of ourselves. Stepping off the soapbox now. Just do it - tomorrow morning.

Thanks. There are literally no other words I can say to express how I deeply your support has helped me. The other day my friend's 12yr dd asked me if I was cured. I had to pause a while because that has actually been on my mind a lot. I asked my dh when I am considered a survivor. He said after 5yrs. But once I stop taking the 5yr meds things could come back. So I very kindly explained to the girl that there is no way to really know. I will be watched closely and hopefully it is gone and never comes back. She simply said, "Oh." So I guess the best way to look at all this is that I am surviving every single day, one day at a time. I truly wonder, sorry to say but I think honesty is important amoung friends, that one day I will wake up with another lump and die the next day. It is not a fear that ruins my daily life, but it is a deep down heartfelt wondering that I think will just linger within me. I know many of you here have been in my same shoes and will assure me that life goes on. I know it does. Returning to work after 9months off is going to feel weird. Like I picked up where I left off. Kinda like I took a really long lunch break and now I am back to finish the days work. Like they say, life goes on. And so shall all of us. Again, thanks.

Yeah, I re-read it later and realized that was too good to be true! Still, that's not bad, especially if you can contribute by just doing a couple blocks.

Lynn, I just love good causes for an excuse to sew and quilt and I'd love to donate a quilt. Please put me down for one and I'll do either kind, just let me know what's most wanted.

Larua, let me clarify. A full size quilt made with twelve 12-inch blocks fetched $300 to $400.

The one wall hanging was MAYBE 12 inches by 36 inches and fetched $450 big ones.

We will take ANYTHING you ladies have to offer from one 12-inch block to a completed top (quilt size or wall hanging) that we need to quilt to a finished piece (quilt or wall hanging) to pink fabric to be used as sashing or backing for the pieces that we need to complete.

Remember, you can do pink or patriotic...we don't care!

If you post that your are going to contribute and something comes up...we completely understand. There is absolutely NO pressure of commitment here. If you can do it great...if you can't there is always next year.

I will keep this bumped to the top for a while as a reminder in case you want to participate.

I'm leaving my sewing machine for... three months (gasp!) as of May 21st, though, so I hope you post your address before then so I don't forget to send the block out. :)

I think I'd like to contribute a pink block or 2. I did the same for my LQS last Fall & also contributed time for an all-day assembly Marathon. Am happy to say my LQS (CityQuilter in NYC) contributed 20 quilts w/ blocks from all over the world, including Australia. Was my first time doing it & I liked contributing to the effort. They'd provided a couple of patterns for 8-1/2" square unfinished blocks. I'm pretty sure I could just expand those blocks for 12 1/2" unfinished blocks, I even have some of the fabrics left over, so I'd be a good use for them (otherwise, I don't do much w/ pink myself).

OK, I'm in 2 blocks for Aug. '07

Ummm, I think we should do these blocks in honor of bitandpieces (Marie) who I just learned in another thread has recently died from breast cancer.

I never had the pleasure of knowing Marie, but I would also like to contribute pink blocks in her memory. I have some great fabric from the Pink FQ swap. I think you will have enough memory blocks for Marie to make a few quilts! I will also try to make a couple of Patriotic blocks. --Amy

I'd like to make some too. One in memory of my grandmother who passed away from BC in '83 & I still miss her dearly. And 1 for BitsandPieces even though I didn't know her. I'll need an address to send these to.

Ladies

What a WONDERFUL idea for us to do a quilt in memory of bitsandpieces! When you send your blocks, please just put a tag on each block if you would like it to be in memory of someone. We would certainly include this on the label on the back of the quilt as well.

As for size for completed projects, we will take anything from a tablerunner to a wall hanging to any size bed quilt you would like to contribute.

if anyone wanted to do an actual ribbon block, here are some free patterns. I've got some pink ribbon embroidery designs I'll do on mine..

Ladies

It has been two weeks from hell, but we are finally moved out of our rental unit and into our new home. I am having quilting withdrawal symptoms, and can't honestly set up my sewing room until the rest of the house is done. I'm hoping that over the Memorial Day weekend, I can get the sewing room set up and get back to quilting.

We just got back on-line and I just wanted to let ladies know that I have received several packages the past two weeks with breast cancer/americana blocks/tops in them and want to say THANK YOU! Keep them coming. All of the packages are currently in my sewing room...somewhere with everything else, so I can't list by name right now each package that I have received. But again, THANK YOU!

I also just returned from our Board Meeting for Quilt Guild and the blocks are rolling in for EVERYWHERE. We are in north central North Dakota, and blocks are coming in from the east, west and south. This is going to be an exciting year for the quilt raffle to support breast cancer. WOW!
