Check out this garage sale find: Chairs for French Country den

I'd been looking for *ever* to find chairs for my cozy "Frenchy" den. It's a tight space, so new furniture just wouldn't work, as the scale is just too large for the room.

I happened upon these at a garage sale and scooped them up for $5 a piece!

The frames are in fabulous condition, as is the caning on the sides and back. I'm going to re-cover the cushions in something a bit softer, but they are surprisingly comfortable and sturdy, and best of all, they actually fit in the room!

(Plus, Hobby Lobby is running a special right now on designer upholstery! I just love it when the planets align that way.)

As mentioned previously by other smart members here: Get a good book and/or magazine then shop your house top to bottom and corner to corner. Think about ways that you can repurpose what you have then go outside and see what is there. If you lik ethe painted FC look check out the mismixed section at the paint stores or buy a Color To Go jug from Sherwins Williams. Add trim to curtains and/or lampshades. If there isn't a local discount fabric store in your area go on-line. Amazing what an inexpensive yard of trim can do for something. Now I'm more of the modern/ rustic country style and yesterdy I did an engagement party for someone who was into that style. Aside from renting 4 tables and chairs the only decorating expense was $52 for 12 giant white hydrangea stems. The rest came from my attic, basement and garden. Brown and green ribbon from my ever growing collection (one should always have ribbon on hand!). Mason jars used for vases and tea lights. Candelabras w/ hydrangea tied in them. Large manilla package tags stamped w/ a stamp tied onto each candelabra and a few mason jars. Old wooden boxes that we laid white cloth napkins in and put plasticware, paper plates, napkins and cups. We tied more hydrangea onto the handles of some of the boxes. I got a differnt perspective on how to incoporate some of those ideas in my day to day living.

That IS a cute chair, great score! Grandmotherly in a good way, if that makes any sense... that same feeling of enfolding cuddliness, I can almost smell the sugar cookies and Earl Grey tea. I actually like the matching pillow better, although it needs to be re-stuffed and really plumped up nice and fat - I think the chunky dark pillow breaks up that lovely feminine curve of the back, keeps the eye from moving smoothly over it. Wish the thrift stores around me had such goodies! Although if you don't mind my totally unsolicited random opinion which you are completely free to ignore or even tell me to shut my yap ;-) I wouldn't use a leather club chair for the other chair. I think with the partly-leather couch it could be a bit too heavy and make the yellow chair seem a little bit "all by its lonesome" as both the only all-fabric seating piece and the only pale-colored one (unless you did something like a buff-colored leather, which I just can't see working). I can imagine a small-scale wing chair - a low, almost squatty one to properly balance yellow chair, not a really vertical one (heck, if you lived closer I'd give you one we got as a handmedown that needs reupholstering. Comfy and sturdy and actually the fabric is brand new but but whoever picked that gaudy floral was stoned or something, and I do want a more vertical version) - in a lighter-colored, texturey, flecky fabric picking up colors from your tapestry couch fabric and a little of the red and yellow would be charming, IMO. Then pop a pillow on it that doesn't match anything at all, like an antique-type needlepoint one. If you were going to have two additional chairs besides this new-to-you one, I'd say go for it with one in leather and one in fabric. Oh, and I love the dog in the admiral's hat... is that a print? And if so, who is the artist? If you didn't mind I'd love to get one to go with my other "dogs in uniform" prints. :-)

Do you need the all the light the glass in the door provides? When you are done with the project maybe add a red curtain covering the entire glass area. What I am referring to is a curtain with a rod on both the top and bottom completely covering the glass area and the curtain is held taut. You have a red lampshade in the foyer already. A red curtain on a brown door won't look jarring. From the outside view the red curtain showing through the glass with the red painted exterior would give the illusion that it is a solid red door from the street view (sort of). You could use a very sheer red material that would still let some filtered light in.

Roarah, it's nice to see a different spin on the idea. I love the floor and the hood, and especially the light. I'm sure people in Provence update their kitchen too, and some of them must go modern. Sochi, that wallpaper is gorgeous, and the colors tie together nicely. The 1st kitchen April posted is what would be in my ideal vacation rental in Provence. April, I wasn't sure what you were referring to when you said, "so..where is the house? is it a specific house? or an imaginary one? does it exist and if yes where can I see it?" Did you mean the original post? The Design Around This threads are mostly purely theoretical: Design a colonial kitchen, a Craftsman kitchen, a French Country kitchen. Do a kitchen in pink. Use a bold colored tile. Use a piece of artwork as inspiration. Although, one time we did have people pick a specific real estate listing and design a kitchen for that specific house (everyone chose their own listing).

Five dollars?! They're great, you did good. I wish smaller scale furniture was easier to find. Not everyone has huge great rooms.

Those are great! I'd keep the leather though, as it's got the perfect patina.

DROOOOOOL!!! Oh, Reno, I LOVE them!! (Sigh!) I even like their seats---but they would be just luscious too with a beautiful fabric on them. I like the tufting---I hope you keep the tufting. :)

Well, through the blurred lens of my camera the seats do appear to be leather, but I'm fairly certain that they're actually "pleather", though I must say it's in pretty good shape.

Yes, THottie, I too love the tufting. Even if I recover them I'd re-do the tufting. (Though I couldn't find any fabric I liked at Hobby Lobby.)

I suppose I'll keep them as-is for now. Right now I have a room full of kids playing Wii, and they're being used so I can't mess with them! (The kids all say they're very comfortable, and very good video game chairs!)

Oh my GOSH! They *are* leather!!!! There is a section of the bottom cushion where the seam had separated, so I flipped it over expecting to see the mesh backing so common with "pleather", but to my utter shock and delight, it's LEATHER!

Whoo hoo!! I'm leaving them alone. I love them, and now I don't have to worry about the surface scratching like it would if they were fake. (That's really the only reason I wanted to re-cover them; I just expected we'd be too hard on them.)

$5.00!!!! OK, I'm jealous, that outdoes anything I've found lately yardsaling & I've found some pretty good stuff lately. Those are positively gorgeous and I would have bought them too, even though I have no more space for chairs. You really scored!!

Reno fan - I cannot believe your luck! $5 a piece. That's a better deal than I got on the comforter set. LOL

My parents have that same exact chair. The seat and arms are upholstered in peach colored crushed velvet. I think it too could use an update. LOL

Great buy for that price, and real leather, too! I guess I see them as mediterranean, not french country, but charming nonetheless. Enjoy!
