Duvet question?? Bed layers??

This is probably a stupid question but if you buy a nice designer duvet cover that is the top piece on your bed, do you always take it off at night or do you use it to stay warm with? My husband loves to sleep with the down comforter and I used to have a nice Ralph Lauren duvet cover on it, but in the mornings the duvet cover was all wrinkled from using it during the night. If you take it off, then what do you use to stay warm and doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a down comforter? Help me with the order for the bed, it's mattress pad, fitted sheet, flat sheet, then what?? What are your layers on your bed??

We keep a quilt on our bed year round. In the summer months, the duvet comes off and we just use the quilt. In the winter, the duvet stays on and we use the quilt and duvet together. So we have mattress pad, fitted sheet, flat sheet, quilt, duvet.

In the winter, the duvet "houses" the down comforter. When it gets too warm for the comforter, we just take it out and leave the duvet cover as the "bedspread", just perfect for spring and early fall. It's usually warm enough in summer that I only want a sheet over me, but for some reason hubby feels like has has to have whatever covers are on the bed up over him (and he wonders why he gets hot at night and complains about not keeping the AC lower). I've had this duvet cover for 12 years now and really want a change, but don't know if I'll find anything I like any better.....

So on my bed, it's mattress topper (memory foam!), quilted mattress pad, fitted sheet, me & hubby, top sheet, duvet cover (with or without the comforter inside).

Yes you do plant them on top of one another but you also put the bulbs that bloom later in the season towards the front of the bed otherwise the dying foliage of the earlier bulbs will ruin the display. Or you can make sure that all the bulbs you plant bloom at the same time - early with early and late with late. It should say on the description of the bulbs. Some online or catalogue sellers give that information for just that reason - so that you have things displaying at the same time. But, if you are going to mix bulbs, say early tulips with late tulips, be sure to plant the late in the front of the early otherwise you'll see that problem I mentioned. For example, I had a large bed against a rock wall, approx 20' long and 4' wide. Near the rocks itself, I planted the large King Alfred type daffs. In front of them I planted Poeticas Daffs, and in front of them I planted Hostas. First to show are the King Alfreds (end of April to about mid May), then the Poeticas (mid May to mid June) then the foliage of the Hostas eventually hides all the browning foliage. Unless someone is right on top of the rock garden, no one would ever see the dying foliage. Hope this helps.

In your daily newspaper all of the inks, except those used in the glossy ad inserts, are soya based and are okay for use in the garden. Your daily newspaper does not print those ad inserts, they are printed elsewhere by printers that do nothing but print those ad inserts. You can use all of your daily newspaper, without the glossy ad inserts, in your garden with no problem.

In my pic above I have the light weight white quilt pulled almost all of the way up to the top. I fold my top sheet about 5" or so over the top of the quilt. Then comes (as in my above pic) my black and white floral quilt folded down to cover about 2/3rds of the bed but if I get cold I can reach down and pull it up. I put it on the bed all of the way to the top and then (hard to describe) I fold it down and then back up (accordion style) so that the top edge of the black and white quilt is at the top of the initial 1st fold. That way in my sleep I don't have to sit up to reach it - it's w/in arms length. Then folded in thirds at the bottom of the bed comes my feather down comforter stuffed inside the green duvet cover. Please note that in my pic above the feather down is not inside the duvet cover (was being cleaned) and that's why it just looks like a green folded blanket at the bottom of my bed. At almost any given time I have some version of this style on my bed but in different colors, weights, etc. I'm a bedding freak and I have tons!

Certainly peat is a brown but fwiw offers no nutrient value to your garden. Not so sure that green/brown applies in a lasagna garden style bed but when trying to build a HOT compost pile, it does. I thought you were able to plant right away in a Lasagna style bed. Also not sure about the cover it with plastic. What purpose would that serve? Most times that is to kill weeds but the cardboard layer should help with that. The cold compost pile should be full of worms and Yes good to use but warning it could also contain viable seeds - weed or otherwise. Turning is not always needed but if it was ever hot then the outer part will likely contain any viable seeds. fwiw - I normally don't turn my compost either. IF it turns out to have too many seeds either use it as is or add it when building a HOT compost pile. obtw - compost starter is a complete waste of money. Compost will self start with enuff greens just moistened (Not Wet) but if you feel you must add something then use the old compost or just some soil sprinkled in. But definitely don't waste your money on compost starter. HTH

It's excessive but we keep a quilt pulled up all of the way, a quilt folded down 1/2 way and the feather down comforter in a duvet folded in 3rd's at the bottom of the bed.

We pull up layers according to how cold it gets. I like to sleep w/ the window open when there is a brisk strong breeze at night & it's easy for me even in half asleep to reach down & pull a layer up if it gets too cold.

I carefully fold down the duvet each night. I would never sleep under it. I have 3 blankets on the bed and one is an electric blanket. I try to make sure that the top sheet is folded down over the blankets so they don't get dirty.

In the summer I take 1 of the blankets off the bed .

I consider the duvet (and shams) the window dressing for the bed. Not to be worn -only looked at!

I sound like a priss, but I'm not. One of the dogs slept with me last night because we had a thunderstorm with no rain :( but I do try to keep things nice so they'll last.

During the winter we have a heavy duvet and heavy duvet cover -- along with the usual sheets. Plus a satin comforter (I collect these old beauties)

Then in summer heat (we live near Dallas) I remove the duvet (and its cover) and replace it with a light summer-weight comforter (Ralph Lauren' Sussex Gardens pattern) and a lightweight satin comforter is folded at the end of the bed. There is also a matching matelasse cover that can be used on really sticky nights too. We do have various duvet covers that I can use over the comforter for a different look too.

The bed is always dressed with a mattress cover -- then the bottom sheet -- then the top sheet. In very cold weather we use a mattress warmer under the mattress cover (which is removed when the bedding is switched around in the spring)

Oh! and at least one or two of the cats usually camp out with us each night too!

Mattress pad, bottom sheet, top sheet, comforter in a duvet cover. If it gets wrinkled, it usually smooths out during the day, or would if my dog didn't nap on it. I'm not very worried, as my bedroom's not on display during the day, meaning I don't see it, walking down a hall or past the open door.

I was Googling and this thread came up.

Have never owned a duvet. Am thinking about buying a new down-alternative comforter from The Company Store and was thinking about getting a duvet (white damask stripe) for it, so I wouldn't need to wash the comforter as often. I use a quilt on top of the comforter now and would do the same if I make this purchase. The quilt is folded down over the foot board at night. It's used during the day more to keep the bed clean, since the cats like to nap there.

Guess I've never seen a duvet in person, because in catalogs and online they look like sheets, but they always seem to be used as the top bed layer. How are they actually different?
