Replacing Valves Without Draining Pool

Due to age, we have to replace the Jandy valves on the suction and return lines of our IG pool (as well as all the other pad equipment). The equipment pad is 10 feet below water level. Any ideas on how we can cut the suction and return lines to install the new valves without needing to drain the pool? Thanks.

You can plug the return lines and skimmer with the pool full. If you have a separate main drain line you will have to dive the pool or get a diver to plug it. The spa (assuming, since you have jandys) should not be a big deal to drain either into the pool or to waste.

I can't understand why the pool was installed without seperate line shut-off valves, since the equip is downhill?? Can you close the maindrain, then put test plugs in the skimmer and return line?

If you are staying with the same model of drain and just changing the finish, then the change is fairly simple. The "show" pieces with the "show" finish can be changed while leaving the unfinished brass tailpiece and trap in place. A competent homeowner could do this. I wouldn't expect a plumber to charge much for the 5-10 minutes it would take to do this, but they might. If the entire assembly needs to be R&R'd, it's a little bit more work, but not overly complicated. Might take 20-30 minutes depending on access.

If you have an open clawfoot tub changing the waste & Overflow kit is not a big deal. On the other hand, if your tub is a standard built-in tub you may have a glue-in type wste & overflow and it could be quite expensive to change, depending upon whether it is readily accessible or whether it would require opening a wall or ceiling. Fortunately, in your case there is no need to change the waste & ovrflow piping under the tub. Rather than get another complete waste & overflow kit ask your plumbing supplier about a "Trim Out kit" in the finish you desire. With a trim out kit you will retain the existing piping under the tub and only the tub drain basket and overflow cover will be replaced. That can be done very quickly from inside the tub.

They are Hayward pumps, the main filter/pump runs for about 8 hours each day on average, year-round. We haven't done anything with the pumps yet. The waterfall pump doesn't run that much (and the repair guy said that was a problem - I should run them regularly) and won't come on at all now - just clicks and makes a weird humming noise. The repair guy said that the motor is shot. That pump froze up during the winter, but came back on after a couple of days (overnight freeze, we're just north of Houston, not real freezes :-P). The main filter/pump the repair guy pulled some 2" piece of plastic out of it and said it was the impeller coming apart and it should be rebuilt. It's running now, so I'm hoping to put that off for another month or two. The valve that keeps getting stuck is a Jandy Never Lube and is after the filter pump that I was told should be rebuilt.

Thank you ilbagnodgiorgio. ilbagnodigiorgio 3 years ago You won't believe this easy solution for a stuck water intake valve that was suggested by Miele. Remove the plastic cover to the valve under the sink. If you can feel the solenoid vibrating when it's attempting to open the valve, you may be in luck. Take a hammer and hit the casing. Yes, hit it hard. After about ten raps, the stuck valve should dislodge itself. This procedure actually worked for me after experiencing the problem with a one year old dishwasher. After three years, it became stuck again. I used the same procedure and it still cleared the problem. Try this before replacing the valve. And don't be afraid to hit it hard.

Thanks cascade. I can plug the skimmers and return lines. It's the two drains the are going to be the real challenge. They are 9 foot down in the deep end.

I agree tigpie. I wish I had master shut-off valves on each line. The pool was built in 1986 and was, overall, done very well. It is about 60,000 gallons with two separate systems (the spa is a completely separate third system). Each of the two pool systems has a 3hp pump, DE filter, backwash tank, chlorinator, supplemental heater, main drain, a skimmer and a return line as well as it's own set of solar tubing integrated into the pool deck. There are a total of 10 2.5" PVC pipes coming out of the pool wall that are reduced down to 2" and the entire pad is plumbed with 2". All the pipe, valves, filters, chlorinators and actuators will be replaced as part of this modernization. I just wish I had 10 shut-off valves on the pool wall to be able to work in peace. I plan to add them as the first step and that's why I posted this question.

Anybody had any success blocking off main drains. If so, how did you do it? Thanks. Tom.

Try placing a plastic tub or bucket over each drain. Hold it in place with a weight such as a plastic gallon jug filled with sand. That should slow or coompletely stop the flow of water from the drains. Then cut the old valves off and install the new ones. You should then be able to turn off the flow with the new valves.

Just sandbag the main drains.
