All Kona (Solid) is not created equal

I was originally on a quest for the 'perfect black' for the BOM-PP I am doing here. It had to be very black to match the sashing fabric I was going to use - which I did not use-BTW. I ended up paying $10.00 yard (maybe even closer to $12.00yard) for "Premium" Kona Black at the LQS.

I have since bought some Kona solid black at Joanns a few times - small amts.

I am now also working on a Stack-n-whack quilt for a nephew in a novelty skateboard fabric (very cool) from equilter - nice, expensive. I brought 5 yards of Kona Black at Joanns - on sale $2.00 off so it is $3.99 yard. While I am sewing on this Joann's Kona, mostly triangles & not prewashed, I am thinking it is definitely different then the Premium I am using for the PPing and I am handling it alot, so I can feel the difference and the Joann's is raveling like crazy. But, I am also thinking is the $10-12 three times nicer??? depends on the project. Even the selvages are different.

So today, I need to cut 22.5" WOF then 22.5" squares - & then subcut into triangles. After I decide how to do that accurately & I cut the strip- I can't get the 22.5" squares - I decide I made a mistake - no - I measure the width and the Joanns Kona -not prewashed is only 40" wide - fuzzy selvage to fuzzy selvage!!! So really 38" wide.

I made a template and cut the triangles out of the too short cut pcs, I was lucky. The book was written in 1997 , when cotton was still 44/45" wide.

So, the Kona at the LQS is nicer, is deeper in color, is more tightly woven

and is 44" wide after preshrinking, and the selvages are so perfect, I have to cut them off when I am paper piecing because it is so hard to tell them from the fabric.

The Joanns, cheaper Kona serves a purpose, but it is not the same, and this is how it can be sold for 1/3 the price. It also was made in a different country.

It killed me to pay so much for a solid black - but I am pleased I did.

That's my assessment of expensive Kona Solids vs what you get at Joann's ~ for what its worth.

I love Kona, and often use it for my hand embroidery. I only buy it from the quilt shops, because I did notice JoAnns was not the same quality, and when sewing it needles differently. You might want to check a few different shops, if you can. Although some quilt shops sell Kona at $10/yard, one of mine sells the same exact one for $6/yard. They only carry the basic white/snow/muslin/black, but I got them on sale at 30% off so paid just about $4/yard! Creation Station (http://www.thecreationstation.com) has a wide variety of colors and sells it for $6/yard as well.

Have you ever used the Marble Prints?
The interesting thing about the LQS, they don't carry many solid colors. They did have the black, and I think they have white, but it is really hard to find the solid colors.

Well, no point in getting in a pissing match about this...I'm sure you are honestly reporting what you saw. OTOH, I can assure you that in the 1994 winter, the 2 big trees on the campus of W&M had no visible damage after 0F. I was definitely looking for it; I even have pictures of the damage to the Trachys planted not far away. (some brown fans, but ones that caught insulating snow still being partly green) This was a period so cold the Potomac north of DC froze solid enough to walk from VA to MD. Even down in Williamsburg, the pot-smoking rebel in our dorm, on a dare, walked out about 25' on an icy coastal pond (brackish water!) without it cracking. Ornamental fountains at fancy hotels were frozen solid. So, very cold...as cold as anything the greater metropolitan PNW can muster. They were wind sheltered by large buildings, in a place that isn't terrible windy anyhow. That could have helped. As I've mentioned before, one has since been severely damaged by a hurricane, as they grew above the shelter of those buildings. (isn't terribly windy, except during hurricanes haha) Clearly the northernmost on the east coast, at the Barnes, has survived several winters that went well below 0F. BUT I've made no secret of my finding a book from the 1940s about Philly area gardens, that said 5 out of 6 tried in prominent public collections, had died by the time of publication. And even that tree is not still around; the Barnes tree is from much later. No way to know without hours of tedious and perhaps impossible primary source investigation, but I have a hunch the winter of 1934 might have been to blame...a candidate for the mid-Atlantic's coldest winter of the 20th century. Perhaps the droughty dust bowl summers of that period were also a problem. So I'm not by any means recommending any normal Joe or Jane Q Public, try to grow these on the east coast.

Yup, the vast majority of our Hosta garden is under a 1930's CCC Red Pine Plantation, so they (the Pines) are thick. We'd heard the notoriety of Maple Tree root strangulation issues with Hostas, but not so with Pine Trees. Alas, at least with Red Pine, there is a problem. Now having helped friends dig out strangled Hostas under Maple trees, we admit the Red Pine problem is certainly not anywhere near as bad, but a factor nonetheless. Many Hosta, over the last 15 some-odd years, have been just fine. I'm sure that the slow growth of many of them is due to this tree root problem, and not merely the heavy shade from the trees. Some Hosta, though, have regressed, some slowly, some dramatically, from tree roots, some even to death when not rescued in time. Our solutions: some are re-planted in buried pots and are A-OK, many more are in COMMERCIAL GRADE (the stuff that's like thin fibreglass cloth, not the cheaper plastic stuff) weed barrier cloth lined holes. Both systems are working. Now, as to deer, you talk fencing as expensive. We also garden about 3 acres, and use a very cheap electric fence. Works. We have about 4 wires. The top wire is not so high as to preclude them jumping it, so here's the real trick. In the spring we place strips of peanut butter coated tin foil strips every so many feet on the hot fence. This 'trains' the deer to the point that the fence can be turned off after a few weeks. Evil but effective ;-) I learned this 'trick' when we kept goats and I saw a young billy-goat lick the electric fence one day. He gave new meaning to 'break-dancing', yhee-haww. Yeah, every year one doe and her fawn figure out that the fence doesn't extend across the driveway, and they wander in, nibble a little here and there, pick their fave and mow it. Knock on wood, they've not mowed the same one two or more years in a row. With 50-60 deer living in our section, we'll put up with one or two bandits. A parting comment: After years of hearing the 'scrunch' sound when sinking a shovel through the Red Pine surface root mat we started digging up a bed under a Jack Pine tree. Both of us looked at each other with astonishment. No 'scrunch'. We didn't find the feeder root mat, so planted 'bare root'. That bed is one of the healthiest ones here now. Oh, and NOTHING grows under our lone Blue Spruce, no surprise. I'm sure you'll work out the details. It's been worth it here! A yard of lush Hosta sure beats a yard of boring brown pine needles. Juicing Question - Content Of Juice Vs Solids

Well, I have done a little reading, and here are my impressions, which seem consistent with what has been mentioned in this thread so far. A centrifugal juicer such as mine separates liquid from solids. The solids contain most of the vegetable's fiber and pulp. Fiber is typically considered to have about 2 calories per gram or 56 calories per ounce, when eaten by people. It actually has more energy, but we are not able to extract much of it. How much, depends on if the fiber is soluble or insoluble in water. Which means that I could do a little weighing and estimate the calories in the juice and in the solids. The pulp contains exactly what, I dunno, but apparently skin, pith, etc are nutritionally significant in some way. The juice contains most of the vegetable's nutrients - vitamins etc - and sugar. The advantages of drinking juice include rapid and convenient consumption of a large quantity of vegetables, or at least the veg sans fiber and pulp. The disadvantages include rapid consumption of a quantity of sugar. I tend to juice vegetables more than fruit, which might reduce the sugar content. When the vegetable is juiced, it starts to oxidize and lose some nutritional value, compared to the whole vegetable. I can't find any reliable information about how quickly, or how significantly, that happens. It may not be meaningful at all. I mostly juice beets, and mix it with a small amount of carrot juice and apple juice. I started doing this because I like beets. Now I want to test the effect of beet juice, and whole beets, in reducing blood pressure.

dian - the link is $3.49 per HALF Yard - unless you saw a different source. If you did, please share. It looks like a few people have the book. From the previous discussion, I started reading the Elm Creek series (I'm on #3)- Now I get it. I put a hold on "Sylvia's Bridal Sampler" at the library. I am 5th in the line (so it will be a long while - that's okay.) I called LQS - they have a few solid blacks, I am going to try to get there before they close, so I'll let you all know. The problem, I made a B'day Block using the Connecting Threads Black - the black looks spectacular (DH even noticed the contrast - he usually has no opinion). I only bought a yard to test the fabric & add to my stash. Compared to everything else I am finding, the richness of the black outweighs the tighter weave I would prefer for what adds up to about 28 blocks and more (I was going to buy 7 yards). Life is full of compromises-I decide to order more this morning-Connecting Threads doesn't carry it anymore. I'm flexible - so one more look see at the QS. In fact, if the price is close to the online prices, I really prefer to support the small shop to keep them in business. Thanks to all who share our expertise. You may want to check out Hancock's of Paducah for Kona cotton. Good quality and only $4.98 a yard. I have never been disapointed with Hancocks fabric. Jayne

I get mine from Hancock's of Paducah and love it.
I tried Joann's and won't buy that one again.

Well that's crappy! Seems to me a different, second rate fabric shouldn't carry the same quality name! It seems to have made me angry....

Kona is the name of the manufacturer and yes, they do carry different lines of different quality cottons. The "Premium" is top of the line, hence the extra cost. JoAnn's is catering to a different market than the quilt shop--its customers come in looking for bargains, so they carry a lower quality Kona that they can sell at 1/2-1/3 the price of the Premium Kona.

I discovered that you really have to watch Joann fabrics for the width of the fabric too. I was making a baby quilt and wanted to bring the backing around for binding figuring on a 45 or 44" width . Wrong, more of the fabric is 40 and 42" wide now. Guess it's like tuna fish and ice cream, smaller packaging to save money .... for them.

Magothyrivergirl I have tried the marble and love it! They come to one of our quilt shows once a year and I stock up. It makes great sashing and bindings, the colors seem to blend with everything. It has a nice weight to it as well, and they carry lots of colors.

Here’s the response I received from Teresa Coates at Robert Kaufman Fabrics:
Kona Cotton Solids are sold at both independent fabric retailers and Joann Fabrics and Craft stores. We sell the exact same quality of product to both and while there has been lots of talk online about different quality standards, that isn’t true. Any inconsistencies are not from our end since we only produce one Kona cotton, but in 271 colors!

Back in the days we were doing the lotto, I bought Kona black for a project and it was terrible. I bought it at JoAnn's. It was so terrible, I suggested we quit using Kona Black. I contacted Robert Kaufman. They said the same thing as above, "We only make one quality of Kona Fabric. We sell the same thing to Jo Ann's we sell to other dealers"

I ended up sending a sample to Robert Kaufman. They said it was not Kona and the distributor must have messed up. It was on a fabric board that said "Kona" and "Robert Kaufman.
