Permed hair

How many here, still get their hair permed? Do any of you do a home perm? That is what I'm going to do this morning, give myself a perm. Mt hair is cut pretty short, so I only perm about from the ears, up. Because of the price to have it done in a salon, it only costs me about $6 to $7. My hair grows fast and needs trimming once a month, so a perm gets cut off pretty fast. One trick I learned from a gal the last time I had a salon perm, I told her I didn't want that Just permed look so when she rolled the hair on the rods, she left a slight strand just around the face, and of course didn't roll the bangs. It looked rather natural. Guess I better get going, I warned DH, its going to be stinky in here for a while. LOL Dottie

Gosh,Dottie, do I remember the old days of home permanents. Haven't seen a kit in years! My daughter is a hairdresser, unemployed right now, I'll ask her when I see her.

I get one about every three or four months.
My sister gives me one, I wish I could do my own! I hate having to bother her. We used to give each other perms, but she quit getting them and left her hair grow long.

No,NO ... that may be the case in many instances michelle,but for years I have had them cut it before a perm & it has been just recently that they have refused. If only a bit needs to be cut I might understand but mine had grown out quite a bit & the short length I wanted would have meant so much hair would have to be cut AFTER the perm that the newly permed hair would have been cut off!!! Doesn't make any sense to me except maybe it is easier for it to be rolled on previously permed hair ends rather tnan on newly cut ends!? I now am going to a beauty school/ college here that will do it as I am used to having it done thankfully!

I have naturally curly hair - almost 63. When I was 5, with curls like Shirley Temple, my cousin with the thin straight hair decided she needed a perm but would only go for a Toni if I went too (her family had money, mine did not - guess who "won"). No hairdresser should have permed my hair - talk about a brillo pad! I have hated going to the hairdresser ever since. I am also hair dryer challenged and diffuser challenged. So I stick my head under the tap to wash it and then add some curl enhancer and that is it. Yet when I go for my colour and cut (yesterday) I always have it blowed straight - by someone who knows how to use a brush and dryer - not just swing a dryer around and then use a flat iron - that will kill your hair. While my hair has always been dry - and very thick - it does look very good when done by a hairdresser - I have to be very careful since my hair can be styled in many ways - 95% of which do not suit me. People always ask me why I curl my hair when it looks better straight! As if....Actually, even if I could use a dryer properly, it would take forever for me to dry my hair. I remember being told that post menopause my hair would start to thin out - well it hasn't. I agree re the smell of perms - I would know immediately if someone even came near me. Now if only I suited any other colour than auburn I would be happy. Red is the devil to maintain - good thing I always wear a hat. It is funny, we always want the hair we don't have. Great that you are happy with your perm - but it is funny that my hair looks just like yours after my tap routine.

A-HAH! Outing the old shag owners. I'm so happy. Mine was in my first apartment. I can't believe I remember all this, but here goes... The curtains were sheets with a basketweave pattern in brown on off-white. I made giant floor cushions from some sort of rough cotton from I-forget-where. The sofa was a long, low, cream-colored cotton velvet thing that a friend was replacing, and sold to me for practically nothing. I found two wooden packing cases with Chinese characters stamped on them behind an import store to use as end tables. I had an Indian printed cotton bedspread hung from a bamboo stick on cup hooks in the ceiling to divide the living room from the dining el with my old wooden drafting table backed up to it, and a lightbulb on a cord hanging over it with a basket with a hole cut in the bottom, inverted and lined with tinfoil, to shade the bulb, as my drawing lamp. I painted the back wall a sort of paper bag brown, leaving a wide border of apartment off-white around it and rounding the corners (I drew them with a 45 record as a guide), and hung a group of reproductions of reproductions of reproductions of old master drawings, with (remember these?) glass and clips for frames. Some boyfriend filched six or eight concrete blocks with enameled faces from a construction site somewhere for the block-and-board bookcases that were de rigeur. Half of that was covered with books, and half with houseplants. My mother bought me some Thonet chairs from the state surplus, and I found an old English draw-leaf library table at a junk store for about $50, which was probably nearly a week's take-home pay in those days. I had a Fisher stereo...a turntable and two speakers...in walnut cases, and a zillion albums. I had long blonde hair and a guitar. And I had...wait for it...a big lovely heavenly waterbed! I used to do my own perms, for many years. Had to stop that when I had problems with my wrists. The gal I go to now says that if you rinse long enough, you won't stink, and she sure rinses me good. DH hasn't complained about any smells since she started doing my perms.

I've done my own perms for many, many years. Salon perms don't last as long for me as home perms. But I've never met a perm that didn't stink.

My mom used to do them for me in Jr High and High School, when I had my own money I used to get piggy back spirals...BUCKs then...even more bucks now with the length of my hair.. But I haven't permed for probably 10 years.

My hair got so dry and so grey that my hairdresser told me I should make a choice: perm or color but no longer both.

I chose color, and use LOTS of product. I wear my hair in a style now that really doesn't require a perm, but my hair is baby fine and on the thin side, so I do sympathise for those who feel they simply must perm. If I lived in the land of humidity, I'm quite sure I would too.

I go to a salon about once a year or longer to get a perm. I like curl, and my hair is long and straight.

I don't anymore, but being a former hairdresser, I have had my share. My favorite was probably the long Barbra Streisand look.
I use highlights in my hair now to give it body. I have very fine, very straight hair, just like my mom.
I am thankful that I took training, so I can do alot of things to my hair myself.
Dotmom....how do you manage rolling it yourself? I am not sure I could do that to myself. Cut yes, perm.....probably not. I admire your patience~

I permed my hair this morning too! I used Ogilvie for colored hair, even thou my highlights are 1 year old. I had the darnedest time finding a perm in the store, seems like the drug stores aren't carry them much any more. I finally found 1, just 1, at Wal-Mart in the clearance aisle. None to be found in hair aisle........whats with that? My hair is shoulder length & was easy to roll myself. My Mom, sister & used give each other perms years ago. I remember lmao when getting rinsed in the sink as I was so ticklish. What a mess with the water flying :~)

I told my husband he needs to take me to dinner as I saved us $90.00!

Trin, it does take a while to roll, even though I only do the top 2/3 of my head. I have to keep spritzing to keep things damp while I'm putting in the rods, and I'm sure it isn't perfect, but it turns out fine. Now, cutting my own hair is another matter, I've tried that before and it was a BIG MISTAKE! Any ways, my hair is curly again and most important, when i do style my hair, the 'do' last several days. What kind of perm rods do you use? I don't do perms now - just have the spiked hair, which works for me - but my sister and I used to give each other home perms, and the rods were awful. They were called spin rods, I think, and were so little that they made a really kinky curl. I don't think most people wear the tight curl permed look nowadays, though.

I have never had a perm in my life. I have the opposite problem. I have a blunt cut which is supposed to be straight and in the winter it looks good . This past week with humidity, I look like Shirley Temple.

Veta, I use the same kind of rods I've seen salon gals use. You know, I don't even remember where I bought them, I've had them for so long. they are a plastic rod with an elastic thingy attached to one end and you fasten it to the other end with a cap-like thing that slips into a hole. I have oodles from big to small sizes. You have no idea how I envy you gals with naturaly curly hair. My DDIL, who lost her hair to chemo, had the most gorgeous red nat. curly hair, but she too would have problems with it when the weather turned humid. Dottie

My daughter the hairdresser says "all home perm kits are the same. They're okay." She does perms and body waves at the shop where she works, they provide all the chemicals.
