Stamp Out Hunger Day tomorrow

Tomorrow is the 19th annual Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Day. It would be a good time to clean out our pantries and donate for those who may not have enough to eat. As I understand it, the food goes to local shelters and food pantries.

Also if you're planning to grocery shop, you might want to stock up on those BOGO's and keep one and donate the other. I have several of these on my list. There are so many unemployed in our town that depend on these places for help.

All you have to do is place non-perishable items in a bag and leave it at your mailbox and your letter carrier will take care of the rest.

Gotta go clean out the pantry now :-)

Will probably shop this afternoon. Make sure you check
the expiration dates on the food as you take them from
your pantry. One year, when we actually had a great
harvest of apples, we delivered them to the food bank,
and they LOVED getting them even with a few little wormies! lol

Memorial Day T'scape...A few hrs left til Memorial Day!

Jeanne, your table is just lovely! The centerpiece is perfect, simple but so eye-catching. And you know that I love the addition of all the white bunnies (and tea pot). I am a firm believer that bunnies go with any and all holidays. LOL. Probably cause my house is overrun with the non-real kind. And none of those in the yard causing mischief, thanks to my life as a city dweller. Sorry I'm late to all the Memorial celebrations. And I never did get out my decor either. I'm going to give myself one more chance...4th of July...and if it stays packed again this year (be two in a row), then it will have to go. New rule I'm trying to enforce, stuff can NOT stay packed several years without seeing the light of day. I need to let someone else enjoy it if I can't. Anyway, I definitely enjoyed seeing your pretty things and am so glad you decorated for "us" here. ;o) hugs, Karen

Poured concrete overlay -stamped and stained

You're welcome! maire_cate - No pool, but the existing patio does get slippery when wet, especially when I am in flip flops. tinam61 - Our patio was poured, and then it was suppose to be acid stained. Instead, they rolled some type of stain on top, and then sealed it. As I said, the inside has held up with two more applications of sealer in the last 5 years. The outside has actually been re-stained (after the first season and flaking began)and has been sealed 4 times. Yes, the overlay has color applied before the epoxy is poured. Are you thinking of having the lower driveway done with stamped concrete, or brick pavers? If you are in an area that gets lots of snow (and salt) I would not try the stamped concrete. My neighbor has has his torn up and redone, and still had it ruined over the winter with the salt trucks. susieq07 - I've seen your driveway before. You've had that quite a while. Has it held up well? Talked to DH today. We are going to wait for the estimates to come back on our project. If the numbers are within our budget, I think we are going to go ahead and either add to the existing pad before having a coating put on it, or tear the pad up and pour a larger pad. We could also do pavers instead of a concrete pad. Maybe the yard would not get as torn up if we are just taking out the old pad, and not having to have a new pad poured. Again, it all depends on the expense and our budget. I wish for a larger patio to be able to serve our needs. Here is the rest of what we are doing. Pergola will be attached to house. So instead of four columns, we will have two. This will improve our siteline from the house and screen porch. From backyard looking at patio and screened porch From backyard with pergola mock-up From backyard with pergola, grill enclosure and fireplace mock-up Fireplace and/or pergola examples that I like. We are not sure whether to go with brick to match our house (if we can find it) and use stone accents like this. There would be seats on either side and the chimney will be higher to tie in with pergola. I like this the best, but chimney would not be quite this tall because we will have gas. Take away the two columns, and scaled down a bit, plus add the seats. Original dream photo. I've hung onto this for a couple of years. Saw this at General Shale yesterday and was determined that this was it! Today, I am having second thoughts that it may be TOO formal. Plus, the white detailing may become a headache for cleaning. I think that I'd rather go with detailing like the following photo, whether used with stone or brick. Did I tell y'all that we will also be improving the looks of the screened porch post? Instead of the solid paint stain on rough treated post, and the vinyl cladding on the outside of the porch, we will have the post re-wrapped with a smooth paintable wood and then redo the screening and trim them out. Again, this is something with can put on the back burner if needed. After all, I just stained the post last summer. Throw in some landscaping, lighting and furniture, we will be all done!

Stamp Out Hunger day--tomorrow

Arghhhh! I had just left the grocery store and was pulling into the driveway when I thought of the date - second Saturday in May. Usually I get a card from my mail carrier alerting me about a week ahead of time, and I shop for some inexpensive but nutritious things, larger packaging than I normally buy for two, often Costco but its an hour away and won't work out this afternoon. No card or notice this year. I'm not seeing much in my cupboards that is close to complete food on its own, or even common main ingredient (like tuna, baked beans, spaghetti-Os or things for kids lunches). I'll go out again, back to the store....

Does anyone stamp on dominoes?
Q
Comments (21)
Stoney, this just came in my email. You can soak dominoes in clorax for 24 hours..helps to let the ink stamp an impression better. Dominoes can be tea stained by bringing water to a boil reduce heat add tea bags(different staining by using diff. teas 4 or 5 bags with burner on low simmer for 30 minutes or longer. Lately I have just been using Stazon inks heat setting and use permanent markers (sharpies) heat setting and glaze with 3d crystal lacquer or diamond glaze. With this last I just wipe the domino. Also if you are using inks on the domino just plane out of the box and don't care for the stamping job before you heat set just wipe it off with Stazon cleaner and start over. This came from the lady I emailed for you earlier, who got it from someone who does this all the time. Hope it helps! Tami

Thanks, kat. I forgot to mention that. In fact I found 4 cans in the pantry that had expired.

The worms reminded me of buying corn at a farmer's market and the man said the ears may have worms in them. Organic corn is prone to have a worm or two. I didn't find any, but used to find plenty when my parents/grandparents farmed.

We buy for the pantries and Hunger Day all year, it doesn't 'hurt' if I buy a couple extras each time we shop, I keep a box in my pantry and put the things in there. My friend bought a couple boxes of cat food and small bags of dog food as well, she included that in her church box. I thought that was a great idea, some families have a pet that needs to eat and this way they don't share the precious 'people' food. I need to call the recipient food pantry to see if they would be open to this.

We took ours over to our mail station a little after 1 and there was a LOT of food waiting to be picked up. In our community, we probably have 5 or more mail pick-up stations. If all of them had as much as ours did, they will need a truck just for here!

The shelters and pantries don't get as much help during the summer months as they do around the holidays so I hope this helps tide them over for a while.

I put mine out this morning; didn't want it to get wet overnight.

I'm on a rural route. Carrier was later than usual; guess having to get out of the truck slowed him down.

Or do they have a hook or something to snag it with?

I put a note in my mailbox stating that mine was at my front door. We were expecting and did get rain today. Plus someone else could easily pick it up and we have lots of ants in the area where our mailbox is. He came and got it and left the note with his "Thanks" on it.

We should remember that Food Banks are always willing to accept donations year around. Also most accept money donations to help maintain the buildings.

Our Stamp Out Hunger drive was saturday May 14. I put out a jar of peanut butter. Which I do every year. One year I forgot so I drove to the Post Office later that day with my PB.
