Stamp Out Hunger Day tomorrow

Tomorrow is the 19th annual Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Day. It would be a good time to clean out our pantries and donate for those who may not have enough to eat. As I understand it, the food goes to local shelters and food pantries.

Also if you're planning to grocery shop, you might want to stock up on those BOGO's and keep one and donate the other. I have several of these on my list. There are so many unemployed in our town that depend on these places for help.

All you have to do is place non-perishable items in a bag and leave it at your mailbox and your letter carrier will take care of the rest.

Gotta go clean out the pantry now :-)

Will probably shop this afternoon. Make sure you check
the expiration dates on the food as you take them from
your pantry. One year, when we actually had a great
harvest of apples, we delivered them to the food bank,
and they LOVED getting them even with a few little wormies! lol

Hey Stylin --- Your "terrace" has great potential! Should be a great spot to hang. As for post pour color...no rush. You really need to allow the 'crete to cure for at least three weeks and preferrably a "full" 28 days before you stain it ,no matter whether you use acid stains or the ferrous oxide...so you have time to read up & experiment a little. Also, neither of these stains will affect the stones or any ceramics...they only react with cement. I've heard that the oxide can sometimes leave a stain on wood sometimes if it is allowed to dissolve and sit there long enough, but it is the chemical reaction with the cement in the concrete that creates the color. And roger the "strong textures"...they can mimic flowing water (think Zen Gardens), grass & tree forms or just about anything you want. It has endless possibilities & can be paired with the other techniques very easily. You can even "practice" with a few different types of trowels and a big tray of mud to see what different effects & patterns you can come up with. One option that has not been mentioned is what is known as "integral color". This comes as either a liquid or dry powder and is added at the time the concrete is mixed. It is 100% permenent, but can tend to look a little "flat" on some applications. While you often see it used to create very strong coloration, I personally think the best effects are when it is fairly sublte and just takes the "grayness" or coldness off the concrete a little. Some of the lighter and more neautral colors are great when mixed with the kind of effects you seem to be moving towards...and...stains or glazes on top of subtly colored concrete can look really wonderful. They tend to highlight any texture that's there. Anyhow...as you can see there are endless possibilities. And below is another link. This site has some pretty good color charts, but you still have to "squint & imagine" how they might look if you cut the color way back. Good news is, most contractors can provide actual mix samples in advance. Best of luck and no matter what else you do...have fun. Wow Minnie! What great deals! I'll have to check out my dollar stores here in Alabama. I did find some nice goodies at Dollar General the other day - since I'm into Altered Books, I am on the lookout for all kinds of embellishments. They had some awesome bracelets and necklace/earring sets for a buck each - each had several different charms, many beads, all kinds of cool dangly stuff that I can use by disassembing them! Also found a large sheet of stick-on earrings for little girls - real neat shiny "gems" that will be great for embellishing. Thanks for the heads-up, Minnie. When to do saw cuts in new stamped concrete deck?

Jetlane, We just went through the stamping nightmare. Even though our contract said we required expansion joints/saw cuts (I was willing to do anything to keep from having cracks), our builder did not put them in. When we reminded them they never 'got to it'. Within the first week we had over 30 cracks. We then did a lot of research. Because we were able to prove the rebar was improperly placed (not the contracted 16" and left on ground rather than suspended) we were able to get a new deck installed. Whew. Take pictures of everything - before, after and especially during. Here is what we found after calling recommended stampers. You need to do the saw cuts around 2 hours after pouring - at the latest early the next morning after a pour. Not later the next day, not a week later. Also when stamping it is important to have the concrete be just right - not too wet or dry. We were told the original job was done when the concrete was too dry. We thought about going the PVC deck joint route but heard too much about the strips eventually cracking. Our concrete guys had a special saw (like an edger) that did straight saw cuts. Make sure they use a new sharp blade. Our cuts are somewhat ragged. Where they used the manual smaller saw the cuts are much sharper. We ended up with three cracks - one running near the expansion joint from the skimmer - but we at least feel we did what we could to limit cracks. We learned after the fact that we should have gotten our own concrete people. We found we had a couple really highly recommended stampers here locally but were already committed to use the ones our pool builder contracted. Another lesson. Listen to recommendations - pros and cons. All it takes is one negative comment to raise a red flag. Don't ignore it and think it wouldn't happen to you. Hope this helps.

There are boxes in a number of our grocery stores asking for donations, and at a number of churches (including both that I attend regularly) and firehalls. The grocery managers are pleased to have me buy food at retail to contribute to them, as that purchase is for some goods that I would not have made otherwise, but I don't do that: the food would be of my choice plus that would cost me a retail dollar. Occasionally during the year, especially near Christmas, some grocers encourage us to ask the cashiers to add some to our bill to give to a local social service agency, to pay $2.57 to buy a meal for a poor person. I don't do that, for while that type of gift allows the service agency to buy the goods that they need the most and to get it at wholesale, say at 80 cents or slightly more ... ... the agency that gets the tax credit is the grocery. Why should I make a gift to them? When I visit the Food Bank or that social service agency or others and write them a cheque, they can buy what they really need the most and get it at wholesale price, same as above ... ... but they give me a receipt for the donation, which results in my out-of-pocket expense being in the neighbourhoood of 50 - 60 cents, instead of having paid a dollar to have bought my choice of goods at retail cost of a dollar. This Frugal Fella likes them apples better. I hope that all of you women have a really wonderful Mother's Day ... mine died 67 years ago (and step-mom, with whom I wasn't close, 23 years ago). And my ex-, with whom I hadn't lived for 38 years, left this section of life nearly five years ago. So my flowers on Mother's Day are white. ole joyful

Thanks, kat. I forgot to mention that. In fact I found 4 cans in the pantry that had expired.

The worms reminded me of buying corn at a farmer's market and the man said the ears may have worms in them. Organic corn is prone to have a worm or two. I didn't find any, but used to find plenty when my parents/grandparents farmed.

We buy for the pantries and Hunger Day all year, it doesn't 'hurt' if I buy a couple extras each time we shop, I keep a box in my pantry and put the things in there. My friend bought a couple boxes of cat food and small bags of dog food as well, she included that in her church box. I thought that was a great idea, some families have a pet that needs to eat and this way they don't share the precious 'people' food. I need to call the recipient food pantry to see if they would be open to this.

We left our bag out last year, as always, and our carrier left it sitting there.

I put mine out this morning.I have to stuff it in my mailbox,otherwise someone other than the postman will pick it up.Luckily i have a large mailbox and it is stuffed to the brim,2 bags full and 2 boxes of flavored rice.

We took ours over to our mail station a little after 1 and there was a LOT of food waiting to be picked up. In our community, we probably have 5 or more mail pick-up stations. If all of them had as much as ours did, they will need a truck just for here!

The shelters and pantries don't get as much help during the summer months as they do around the holidays so I hope this helps tide them over for a while.

I put mine out this morning; didn't want it to get wet overnight.

I'm on a rural route. Carrier was later than usual; guess having to get out of the truck slowed him down.

Or do they have a hook or something to snag it with?

I put a note in my mailbox stating that mine was at my front door. We were expecting and did get rain today. Plus someone else could easily pick it up and we have lots of ants in the area where our mailbox is. He came and got it and left the note with his "Thanks" on it.

We should remember that Food Banks are always willing to accept donations year around. Also most accept money donations to help maintain the buildings.

Our Stamp Out Hunger drive was saturday May 14. I put out a jar of peanut butter. Which I do every year. One year I forgot so I drove to the Post Office later that day with my PB.

Our church has set aside the 3rd Sunday of each month for Food Pantry day. It is amazing what is donated..

We put ours out yesterday.Some canned food,mac and cheese,popcorn and a bag of cat food.That went out from Spitz,so maybe it will save another kitty from being tossed away like garbage!
