Another of my unfinished projects...3 photos

I have a Dresdan Plate project I've been s-l-o-w-l-y working on for years.

I made the "plates" about 10 years ago. They're all finished. I have six plates that still need to be appliquÃÂ©d to the 18" background blocks. I think I have a total of 30 blocks; I'll have to recount them.

The petals were sewn together by machine; I turned under the curved edges and hand basted them. I pinned the plates to the background blocks and have been hand appliquÃÂ©ing them in place with YLI silk thread. I love this thread.

The lilac petals were cut from scraps of a pioneer-girl dress I made for my niece when she was 7. She's 26 now. I plan to make two twin-size quilts from these blocks. Her daughter will get one and the other will go to another young neice.

Of course, that one petal...the one next to the 3 o'clock position...seems to not "fit" with all the others. I have promised myself I am NOT trying to remove and replace it from all the completed blocks. No way, no how, no matter how ADD I can be.

Your color scheme is lovely....very soft and feminine.

I do kind of see what you are saying about the one petal fabric...but I didn't notice until you said something; so I don't think it really stands out that much unless someone is looking for it to be different. I definitely wouldn't be losing any sleep over it!

I think your odd petal fits just fine. You wouldn't want them all the same value, would you? It adds interest.

Thanks for the kind words folks !!! To further protect and bring out the beauty of the Redwood, I sealed it with some great Varathane Spar Urethane !!! Here's how it came out ... Before ... After ... Contrast of: Foreground/Finished and Background/Unfinished !!! And Voila !!! Ahhh the Plumies will have to wait yet another day or so before they can move in ... I like the black surround that's fitted around the firebox, but the wood frame around the black surround looks out of place. It's the wrong color and the wrong size. I would opt for a darker color wood that's 8-10 inches wide on the sides and maybe 10-12 inches wide above. It could have some kind of etching or design that blends with your decor. I would try to use a sort of neutral design that goes with any decor because fireplaces are usually seen as "permanent" and hard to change. Instead of dark wood, another option might be satin finish black cast iron or powder-coated steel that looks like cast iron. A good carpenter can build a wooden surround for you -- or you can buy one on the web if you shop around carefully and find one that will fit right. A metal fabricator will be more costly. The challenge will be to find a really competent installer.

It does make more sense since we have young children & that white would get pretty grimy fast. Thank you for the "looks pretty 70s" reality check! That's exactly what I'm trying to get away from in this late 40s-but-horribly-remodeled-in-early-70s house. I've been up to my eyeballs in shag carpeting...harvest gold and avocado green...dirty oak woodwork, "Spanish Mediterranean" hardware, brown on brown everything, and heavy fake paneling. Ugh. No clients. It's just our family (DH, Harry-Dog, and me) computer room and "reading" room. I do see myself sitting in here this winter! Imagine...60 mph winds are raging, temps are -30, and I'm snuggled in, under a blanket, reading. After months of de-construction, and sanding, and drywall dust, and chaos; I'm ready for a break. It can all begin again next spring. I like the idea of having another place "to be" rather than the living room with its loud TV, or the kitchen. "Next year" we'll hopefully have the sunporch finished and liveable, but for this winter, the office will be my little bit of Heaven."

Those blocks are lovely! And I also like the one with the larger print. It *does* add character to the block. Just be sure to turn them around to different positions when laying them out. It would be just to "matchy-matchy" to have them all at the same position in the quilt.

I love your blocks. That one little petal you are fretting about will disappear into the quilt when you are finished. I could not figure out what you were worrying about until you explained it. Beautiful work.

I really love all the small prints you have used, even in the background block. I plan to do one of these (dresden plate) in the future, hopefully, and you have inspired me. I think, also, that the one petal will blend right in when it is completed. Hope we get to see finished pictures.
