Sometimes vitamins make me nauseas also... If he is saying to take 3 a day why don't you build up slowly.. just take 1 day for a week or 2 and let your body get used to it? And if that doesn't work maybe try another brand? Just a thought...

They make gelcaps? really. I've gotten to where I can almost taste the pill before it hits my mouth, and then i can't swallow it. they should coat all of them. i've tried dipping them in butter before i take them, but i hate it now.

have to take all of these before i try the gelcaps...they're prob twice the price??

For the last 25 years or so I have been taking Tums at bedtime. I remember my mom saying calcium upset her stomach and I had her switch to Tums which worked well for her. Since Tums bothers you, I don't know what to suggest.

I'd try working up from 1 gelcap as JaneMarie suggested. Do that for about a week, then add a second and see how it goes.

I always wake up at night, so I'll go down to the kitchen and take my vitamins (including a huge Vitamin D pill) and then go back to sleep. I learned this trick when I was taking iron pills for anemia.

You are supposed to spread the pills throughout the day because your body can't absorb them all at once.

You might also try taking a couple of the childrens Flintstones with calcium. I did Flintstones with iron when I was pregnant. That helped me get what I needed without the nausea.

I have learned that you should take calcium Citrate because it is better absorbed than calcium Carbonate.I take a calcium that is powder form in a capsule.Coated tablets don't break down as well as the capsules.
I have found with some supplements that have a tendency to upset my stomach,taking them at night with a few bites of food,maybe a cracker,helps to alleviate that problem.

WHEN AND HOW TO TAKE THEMÂ Generally, it is not important whether calcium tablets are taken with or without food.There is some evidence that taking calcium supplements in the evening may be of benefit, to prevent bone breakdown.
 Calcium carbonate requires gastric acidity for the best absorption, so it should be taken with meals. Calcium citrate is not dependant on gastric acidity so can be taken at any time.
 If you are taking an oral bisphosphonate for your osteoporosis (for example, Actonel orFosamax), it is very important that you take the calcium supplement and your
osteoporosis medication several hours apart, otherwise the absorption of one medicine interferes with the other.
FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT THE ABSORPTION OF CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS
Certain things can interfere with calcium being absorbed. These include:
1. Certain foods  Phytates (found in cereals, bran, soy beans, seeds) and oxalates (found in spinach, rhubarb, walnuts). Therefore, some vegetarian diets may decrease the
amount of calcium absorbed from the diet.
2. Inadequate vitamin D Â Less calcium is absorbed in the intestines of people with inadequate vitamin D levels. People who are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency include
those who are housebound, the elderly, people in residential care and dark-skinned people (especially if veiled).
3. Long term treatments with steroids (eg. prednisolone & prednisone)
4. Kidney disease

It could depend on the brand. I can take Os cal, but not Citrate. They also have the liquid kind. Discuss this with a good pharmacist. Lillipad offered some good suggestions also. Also talk to your Dr. If you take other meds and/or supplements this could be a problem I take 3 Oscal, with Vit D with a magnesium pill late afternoon, or when I remember. Take them separate from potassium.

I take those tablets with a spoonfull of applesauce, yogurt or pudding. The only thing I taste is whatever is in the spoon.

I have heard that your body can't absorb more that 200 mg of calcium at a time, so they need to be spread out during the day.

If you still can't tollerate the calcium after the gradual doseing and taking with something, then you should inform your Dr. He/she may have another solution. You should be able to handle that question over the phone.

I used to take three daily. Now I am taking boniva. I took the calcium three times a day, not all three at the same time.

Like someone else suggested, I would take just one for a while, and then up it to two, and eventually three.

I would discuss this with a pharmacist. They know more about medications, including OTC and vitamins, than doctors. It's part of their job, to give advice.

My rheumatologist told me that if I liked dairy foods, that it was better to get my calcium from them. Luckily, I like skim milk. I have 3-4 glasses a day. The milk and drinking lots of water helps me when I'm trying to lose weight. Good luck.
