JS/Redir Virus Infection - Anyone on here having trouble with thi

HELP!!!

I just got a message from "schoolhouse". She cannot access the GW at all. Her AVG "says it blocked the page because of a "JS/Redir" virus infection. Which means that it is a virus that if you get it into your system, it will redirect your web searches and stuff to other sites."

She went on to write, "...I was up until 1am this morning reading about it online. So far, it looks like AVG caught it and won't let me open any Gardenweb forums (I tried last night - the Rose forum came up but only once, then AVG said "No Way - stay out of here". I can open any other of my forums that I read daily except GW.... "

She continued: "Ask some others on Cott. Garden if they ever had trouble and what they did, because I was reading some old posts from a couple years ago (came up when I googled a question, but I couldn't open the post to read it all) and it sounds like this redir made its rounds before."

She says she may have to take her computer in to have someone take a look at it. She tried on-line helps sites, but couldn't get anywhere with those.

If you know anything that could help, please post it here.

YES!!! I thought it was just me. I've been running security scans for the past few hours. It started yesterday late afternoon (my time) and keeps doing it...on Explorer and Firefox (we have both).

I have AVG Anti-Virus security software and it keeps coming up with that darn JS/Redir Virus Infection! I have to send the Virus message to "the vault" whatever that is, and then I can see the page...but it does it every time you change pages. I think the GW needs to check their virus software!

Tell Schoolhouse she can e-mail me (I'll try to send you an e-mail, so she can get my address...it didn't work yesterday, but I can't post it, since it's my work computer). Thanks Annie, it's good to know it's not just me :)

I experienced a similar issue on my Apple computer the other day.
The problem appeared as a totally mixed up Garden webpage, and when I clicked on any message link I was taken to some obscure webpage, not of my choosing.
This was really odd as Apple system are not normally affected by viruses as almost all are written to inconvenience Microsoft Windows users.
Anyhow the solution for me was to call upon DH who quickly put things right again.
The solution was simple, at least on my Apple system, Shutdown my Browser, and clear all web related caches, once this was done everything was golden again.

For what it's worth... The beginning of last month I was having the redirect problem ( Which AVG Free DID NOT find! )... I took the computer into the shop and my tech said he found a rootkit virus... After he got rid of it I had him uninstall AVG, install Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes and redo SpyBot ( He also installed I. E. 8 and ran all the scans after he cleaned it up )... The very next night I ran a Full scan with Security Essentials and it found " Virus: Win32/Alureon.H ", it Disinfected the file and told me which file to delete... Two days later Security Essentials found " Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5353.1 " and Removed all the files... ( BTW, I ran MalwareBytes first and it didn't find it ) I've been getting my updates and running scans on a regular basis and so far.... All clear... Rita P. S. I have my computer set to Alert me of MS updates but not to install them... The definitions for Security Essentials DO NOT show up in the regular MS security updates, you have to manually update them every day... Rita

oh yes believe me he does need it this type of very serious rogue does not just disappear!! Please tell him not to use any passwords with it this way and definitely not to do any type of banking or financial transactions. the fact it is not allowing him to install security programs is HELLO A HUGE RED FLAG telling him all is NOT well. I can not stress how important it is to have this pc cleaned. The forum at LzD is excellent they lead you step by step through the cleaning process running the proper scans. There is nothing that you can just run and make it go away this is a multi step process. This is the direct link to the malware removal area of LzD, register there, start a post of your own there giving all this info and the team will help. They are very patient and willing to answer all questions. If you need help along the way just let me know I am there also. Analysis and Malware Removal It is likely if he took it in to someplace to have this cleaned they would instead wipe his drive and reformat the pc and he would lose everything not backed up. So he should at the very least back up what ever he treasures that is on that pc.

I agree with using food as preventive medicine, rather than dangerous flu-shot (combining virus). Carol: Glad to hear that you are back on schedule .. I am delighted to hear of your progress & success. It feels SO GOOD to have looser pants, and I wish everyone have that experience with daily exercise. Sam: does your Achilles tendon hurt to wear shoes with heels? I don't like shoes with heels: one of my foot is shorter than the other. I actually do more exercise on the treadmill than outside ... I can wear my husband Walmart open-heel plastic clog, I insert a memory foam inside ... and wear that on the treadmill. I wear size 7 woman, but I need a BIG shoe to insert the thick $5 memory foam. The plastic clog has bigger toe-box than running shoe, plus no need for lacing.

My sympathies as I have also lost favorite roses to this horrible disease. This weekend I was at the District Conference for the ARS and there was much talk about RRD and other pests and diseases. The term we loved was 'be a tall shadow in your garden' meaning be a presence there to look over everything. We all get busy, lazy, sick, hurt and can't be out there all the time. But when we can we need to be aware of what it looks like normally so we know when something is not right. I was able to save one bush by noticing some weird growth at the tip of a cane, which I cut out. 3 years later, and so far no more signs of RRD on that bush. This fall I found some suspicious growth on another rose, so I cut out that cane. Time will tell. If Little Mischief looks ok, then you can plant next to it. I would think all of the mites are dead or dormant at this time of year. But watch Little Mischief very carefully when it comes out of dormancy in the spring. That is when RRD can show up.

I just ran a check on my computer - I had it too!
I had AVG put it in the Vault.
Man! Garden Web better clean up their act or this whole site is going to go into outer darkness!!1

There is something not right about GardenWeb lately. Sometimes when I post, it says there was an error, even though it still posts.

I'm pretty good with computers. Keep in mind that it may be AVG's fault, not GardenWeb's. Sometimes anti-virus programs can be over-zealous. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and haven't run into a problem (yet) although for some reason GardenWeb has been acting funny lately.

You can also contact GardenWeb and see what they have to say. Their may be a known issue.

I'm in! Just sat down and thought I'd give it another try. I had cleared the GardenWeb site out of my "bookmarks" last night; but continued to type in a search for "Gardenweb forums" off and on and got the AVG warning all day.

Well, the pop up warning is gone - sure hope that means either AVG or GW put things right and not that AVG gave up on telling me to stay away and said "Go ahead if you want into GW so bad". ha. Anyway, so far so good. I'll be sure to pay attention to the next scheduled AVG daily scan and see if it picks it up in my system.

Thanks Annie, for directing my inquiry here and to other Cottagers. Now - what have I missed today? Time to read.

Natal, whatever it was DH fixed it in short order. I was using Camino but it was also doing the same thing on Safari. DH said it wasn't a virus on my Mac, I was viewing a corrupted web page which he cleared up by emptying all browser caches. DH tried Garden Web on his Mac and had the same thing happen using both Safari and Firefox, so it wasn't just my computer. Everything has been fine since then.

Gardenweb put up a special alert on the top of all forums. It looks like it indeed was AVG.

Finally! My husband worked on that silly thing all day running scans and trying suggestions...still that darn Vault message. Finally gave up about 4 pm and took our kitty back to the vet (he's doing much better). I got back and thought I'd try again and the vault message is gone :)
