I'm right there with you. I have passionately loved decorating since I was four years old. I've loved planning and decorating every room of every apartment and home I've ever had. But, about a year ago I reached a place where I felt happy and content with my home the way it was and I've had no desire whatsoever to even tweak it since then. When I stop by places like Marshalls or TJ Maxx, I'm usually not interested in walking through the housewares section . . . partly because I don't want to be tempted to have to find a place for more "stuff" (LOL)!
Am I concerned that I'll never feel that passion again? No. In the meantime, I'm saving a lot of money by not buying "stuff " and, heck, I still like the way my home looks right now.

I think it's easy to be in a state of mind where decorating takes a back seat to other interests and priorities. Enjoy your whatever your current interest is. You certainly aren't lazy; you just have a different focus right now.

I am so right there with you! I have some rooms that I still would like to upgrade but the changes will involve some major furniture purchases and I cannot get motivated to spend the money on that.

I am obsessed with traveling right now since my boys are still young enough to want to hang out with me - when they are teenagers and I am repulsive to them - I will probably get refocused on decorating.

I agree with what every one else has said - it is like any other interest that waxes and wanes, it is certainly not laziness on your part. (Now me ignoring my chipped up baseboards in our mudroom and not repainting those - that is definitely laziness...)

Pretty much hat lynn in NM said...I reached a point where I guess I was comfortable with the way things were for a while. Now I'm getting in the mood again for some changes. That and the fact that I realized one day that things in the house are 16 years old. Where does the time go?! So I decided it was time to freshen up our Master Bath but have I done anything yet? No! But I'm looking for ideas and even have picked up a few samples, so when I get serious, y'all will hear from me over on the bath forum.

Don't get me wrong, I have painted, changed other things like draperies, chairs, etc over the 16 years, just not major renos. I recently bought a couple of new rugs for the great room and DR for example.

You go Lauralincoln! Spend all the time you can with your boys! It goes by so fast. I have a feeling you will never repulse them, but decorating can wait! I just lost my mom unexpectedly last week, and I'd so love to spend this mother's day with her.

I go through that too. While I'm happy with my home, there are still things I'd like to change. Then I just say, "Ehhh" who cares?

But what lights the fire under my tush again is when I see someone else's house with the same color/style wood floor I have. It just puts me back in the mood for some odd reason.

I am glad I am not the only one to experience this:) I too, have a young family and it is like life is suddenly in fast forward and I just want to enjoy every moment and decorating is time, and mind, consuming:). I have just spent so much of my life focused on decor. I even wallpapered my dollhouse when I was four:) and never stopped til now. I somehow feel off now that it is not a priority. I do still enjoy coming here and reading mags so I still enjoy decor just not the decorating part for now.

Roarah, are you otherwise ok, no changes in your sleeping or eating habits? Losing interest in your passions can signal depression, and spring is a common time for it to take you by surprise.

Lake Girl, I am so sorry about your mother. I lost mine two years ago, at age 92, and still miss her and think of her every day. We always need our mom...

I go through stages on decorating, and we are in the midst of updating our 1973 kitchen; really don't like making decisions that have too many details, so are keeping it simple, and think I'll like it that way. After all, I've lived with this for 40 years, am used to it, and am happy with what's there.

I prefer to think that I am currently 'on hiatus' from decorating! LOL

I doubt I'll ever lose my decorating mojo but have had many other things to do and think about so decorating my house has taken a backseat. I bought new rugs 2 years ago and since then have only bought art.

I like my house as imperfect as it is and don't feel any urge to change much. I do plan to buy some new bedding as haven't done that for awhile. That may start one of those 'snowball' effects but I'll wait and see!

Hugs to you Lake Girl. Your memories of your mom will always be with you. I lost my mom nine years ago. She was my best friend and mentor and I miss her terribly. Yes O we sure do always need our mom.

Laura and Roar, no matter what you do in life the most precious memories will always be of our loved ones. Many years ago a friend of mine would get upset that my husband, children, and I took a family vacation each year, She thought we should have put the money towards new furnishings. My dear first husband died when he was 45 and I was 41 with three children still at home. At my husband's funeral that friend was devastated and she said how wrong she had been. That we had spent our money wisely making beloved family memories.

Lynn pretty much described it for me also. My 45 yo son shares my decorating 'obsession', and we've always enjoyed the thrill of the hunt. At least one day on the week-end we would search out a local auction, estate sales, consignment stores, thrift stores, and discount outlets such as Homegoods. Over the last 2 years we've decided 'we 're done' and although we know it, still like to look, just not as often. He recently had wood floors installed, and I had plantation shutters installed, so it's more about upgrading. The decorating with re:to painting, furnishing with furniture/accessories, etc.,is not something either of us plan on re-doing for a few years. ;o)

Interesting question! Sometimes I read about people moving furniture from one room to another and look around here, wondering if anything I have would look better somewhere else. I did recently move a piece from the dining room to my bedroom after acquiring a vintage buffet from an estate sale (divorce sale, really), but on the whole I am happy with the layout and placement of the major pieces. But, I've moved accessories around and refreshed the kitchen, redone our screened porch with new siding, built a front portico, back decks and patios, as well as brick gates, new fences, swim spa, and dozens of other things ... All in the past seven and a half years. So I guess the truthful answer to that is that I haven't! And here I started out think my answer was yes, lol!

Lake girl, my hugs and deepest sympathies to you. I lost my mom in 2010, but after the worst of the grief, I found her again by spending time doing the things we enjoyed together and bringing her along with me in my heart. As Mitch Albom says, when someone you love dies, you don't end your relationship with them, it's just that the relationship changes.

Re decorating mojo, I think even most plants need a resting period before they can bloom again, so it is with decorating. And when you come back to it, it's with a fresh and welcoming eye.

I've kind of stopped my projects too, diverting myself with the wedding veil and now a dress for myself to wear. So the creative process continues, but just in a different direction. But after 7 years of house design and 3 years of building and another year of landscaping, I think it's time.

I will get back into it though via lists. I need to wander around the house and start making lists of thing, big and small, that need to get done yet. I still haven't made the drapes for the DR, and there's that small strip of wood under the door in the FR that never got painted that annoys the heck out of me, and I want to try and faux finish the grate on the stone wall by the wood stove....
