I've rooted leaves in mix, that can take around a year. I've recently water rooted a stem, but didn't make note of the date I put it up. I took these pix, 'cause they show the round tuber AND the roots the plant develops. I really don't remember how long it took, but am guessing 9 months maybe, like from last Fall (I think I had accidentally broken the stem off the parent plant). and and So if you can grow some serious patience, you might end up w/ something like this. I rooted some cuttings in water and some leaves in soil but it did take more than 6 months. I now have a lovely little plant about 4" tall. After you plant it in soil the cutting or leaf will eventually die off and a new shoot will emerge. --------------------- RE: How long does it take to root one of these? Veilchen, Jim, I don't know why I didn't think of that, I've had to "sweat" them out before. Thanks Jim, My BC's are doing great. I don't understand why they give you so much trouble. I wish we were neighbors so I could stop by and see your soil and growing conditions. In 2001 I bought my first BC locally from a "high end" garden center that was selling grafted plants from Baily's nursery. It is a great specimen, I still have it. I bought 2 more in 2006 from David Austin they are just starting to really take off this year. Last year I bought another from DA, which is doing fine, but has some catching up to do. I see you're in z7, so winter hardiness can't be part of the problem. I think I remember from awhile back that you were getting soil tests and not finding any problems other than you felt your soil was crap. Have you improved it at all? I've been a happy customer of theirs for at least 8 years. I originally ordered only one but when it arrived with the rest of my order the stem of the rootstock was split from the bottom to within an inch of the top of the graft. I let Shellie know immediately and I had a replacement within 7 business days. The one with the split still looked alive so I potted it up to see if it will survive, so far, no activity on either but I will try to sweat them out his week. That should work. I think everyone experiences this feeling at some point or another. I went through the "just when I think I have figured outs" so many times it was crazy. It is a learning experience every day. But most importantly it is a getting to know your worms. I have 3 large mega populated bins. (yes it is time to split the bins again) and each bin is different. Those worms may "LOOK" alike but they all don't necessarily act alike. I have a bin that loves to stay around the bottom. I have a bin that is fast as greased lightening to get to the food. I have a bin of pure food pigs. Stop trying to second guess yourself. For everything you do right then there will be worms that just kick up a fuss anyway. Some things you will do wrong and the worms will still survive. Enjoy the learning curve and just go with the flow. Stay tuned to this site. Trust me all you could EVER need or want to know is here. This became my "go to" site everytime I had a question or doubt. Don't feel like you have to have a worm cam going on them. They will be ok, trust me. You will KNOW when things aren't good in wormville. They will pack their bags and head for the great out of bin. Have fun. That's why we all do this.

There probable isn't mistake I haven't made---and made--and made!! When I make the same one more then once on the same piece I turn off the sewing machine and go do something else. I am making the blocks for "Sylvia's Bridal Quilt" and I don't think I have more then a couple that I haven't ripped out at least once. Not a good time. Fortunately, perfection isn't necessarily one of my big requirements. Jayne
