Has Anyone Else Ever Done This?

I was joining strips for a binding. When done, I took it to the ironing board to press it lengthwise and in the middle noticed that I had positioned it wrong once sewing them together and the joining seams were going to the opposite side. So, I took it back to the machine to undo it and sew it right, EVEN DOUBLE-CHECKED IT! And when I go back to the ironing board, guess what??? And guess what else??? I did it again!!! It's a good thing I made it extra long. I searched quilting disasters on this forum and saw many, but not this one. Anyone else want to confess any new messes? Have you ever done something so disastrous that it wasn't even fixable without completely redesigning it? I've done a lot of things wrong and managed to either fix them or fudge them, but never so bad that I just threw it aside completely.

So-ooo with ya! My favorite quilting instructor once told me that there wasn't a mistake any of us in class could possibly make that she hadn't already made herself! - at least once!! Ritaweed, you're amongst many who have done the same - or worse:)

You can do it, but it depends on your growing season. It takes X number of days for a plant to start producing. If you sow it in the ground, you count from the sowing date. If you start your warm-weather plants like tomatoes indoors early, you count from the date you transplant them into the garden. I live in the Pacific NW, and it stays too cold for too long here for me to do anything other than start tomatoes (etc) indoors about two months ahead. If I waited until warm weather actually arrived, the plants would probably just start to produce fruit when the first frost cut them down. If you have a long growing season, you might be able to do it, but you're not going to win any races for early production. For tropicals (tomatoes, peppers), if you plant outdoors too early, they may end up rotting before they get a chance to sprout For more info on sowing early, go over to the GW Winter Sowing forum for more info.

I see you already got a response to your question in the other thread in this forum, and in the Vines Forum. Here is a technical article at PubMedCentral that says in the section, "Genetics of Flower Color Variants" that "At least 21 floral phenotypes are determined by five genetic loci". One gene selects color, another affects intensity of the color, another influences pattern, and so on.

Anyone rebuild an old detached garage?

We are buying an old house with an old one-car garage that is basically crumbling. The wood is very decayed and the whole thing is leaning. I would like to replace it with a little workshop/art studio, but the garage is in violation of the setbacks so the only way to rebuild it is to call it a "conservative restoration" and basically rebuild it from the inside out without ever tearing it completely down to the foundation. Has anyone else ever done this? If so, can you give me a sense of the major steps and expenses? Thanks! -Melissa

My kitchen was last remodeled 22 years ago by a group of friends from my church. (Friends of mine used to live in my house.) When my carpenter (also a friend from church) tore down some cabinets yesterday, he found a note on the sheetrock, in his handwriting, that said: "You know that nice older lady who lives at 184 Forestry Lane, across the street? Well, when she was young and supple, she helped to build this wall!" The "older lady," who's all of 55, still lives across the street, and got a big kick out of seeing this. None of us knew we'd be here when the kitchen was remodeled again!

Oh Yeah...twice! Over $50 in fabric each time!!! I'm still holding on to the fabric tho. In fact I have one of them on the cutting mat now trying to figure out if there's anything at all I can do with it!!?!! Pot holders?? Lotsa pot holders!

There probable isn't mistake I haven't made---and made--and made!! When I make the same one more then once on the same piece I turn off the sewing machine and go do something else. I am making the blocks for "Sylvia's Bridal Quilt" and I don't think I have more then a couple that I haven't ripped out at least once. Not a good time.
Fortunately, perfection isn't necessarily one of my big requirements. Jayne
