What are you up to, Worldmom? :-) The last I knew you were having all white perimeters except the hutch and island...

rhome - what in the world is my problem?! I didn't even think of your kitchen, and yours is the perfect example!

I was going to email you about this, but yes, we're thinking about doing the entire bank of cabinets on the sink wall in "a" green. The rest of the perimeters would still be white, and the island stained wood.

The other thing we're mulling around is doing all the perimeters in white, but a much bolder paint color on the wall. Something like yesdear's AMAZING kitchen.

DH really prefers going with all white and painting the walls a bolder color, but I think I could be happy either way. I'm hoping to find several multi-color kitchens to show him so he can get a feel for what it would look like to have the sink wall cabs a different color than the rest.

I think egganddart was planning/considering blue on 1 cabinet run and white on the other.

That reminds me, Lascatx has blue on one wall with white perimeters and cherry island.

I had a lot of fun encouraging Rhome through various color considerations. When we started out, we couldn't decide between white and cherry. I'm not sure quite how the blue evolved other than I wanted some blue somehow in the kitchen. We considered (briefly) blue bases and white wall cabinets and somehow evolved to the one wall of talls in blue. Someday I will have to get a photo of a finished kitchen. :-D

Yes! That's just what I was thinking! --about yours, Lascatx... Based on you, I have a while yet. ;-D Although I certainly have bored people enough with photos of mine. It's just the 'finished' part that's a problem.

Maybe we can welcome Worldmom to our small club of people with one odd-colored run of cabinets, and 'too many' colors in their kitchen. :-D It's a good club.

Check out the March\April 2009 issue of "Kitchen and Bath Ideas" they have two kitchens (pg 101 & pg 106) with mixed perimeters. It's a fantastic look.

I want to join the club! Mine are greenish black milk paint on one side & white semi-gloss on the other connected by a red wall - at least they'll be white if I ever finish painting them! I'll post a pic later; I'm at work & I don't have anything already in Photobucket that shows both walls.

I have always loved burgundy, and it was pretty much a 'have to have' color somewhere/somehow in my kitchen. I first planned to have a burgundy hutch or something on that wall, but was playing around with my software, and when I did the whole wall like that, something about it just sang to me. I was afraid it would look haphazard and without reason, so thought it was just a wild whim. I am SO glad I posted the rendering and Lascatx loved it best of the options, too, and really gave me the encouragement to go for it. I'm eternally grateful!

Hi, I'm posting a link below of something I found last year after so many kitchen designers told me time and time again not to mix colors or styles. They told me if I did that it would look like I updated my kitchen at different times because maybe I couldn't afford it all at once. I told them I didn't want my kitchen to look "brand new" but rather that, my kitchen like my house had been around for awhile- I know I'm not like everyone.

Well, one day I googled "mixing furniture styles or colors in kitchen" and up popped the article from This Old House. It's a good one and shows some photos with 2 different colors of cabinets as well as stained cabinets - all on the perimeter. The design of the kitchen in the article is not typical layout and room shape etc but hopefully the pics will help you. The colors are green and white and stained wood. I love the sink base - I used that as inspiration for my sink area. I had already clicked with the general style of mixing things so now I had something to show when I would meet a KD. I finally found somebody who "got me" - and we're close to a good design at this point.

Worldmom, the green hutch in the TOH kitchen article reminds me of the spring/celery green you like...But maybe a little stronger...and, of course, they're mixing it with the darker wood, like you will, too. Do you have a color you'd like to see on your rendering?

garden18c - I've always loved that TOH kitchen. I am going for more of a modern mix of styles and colors, which has been challenging...but I am close. Can't wait to see what you've come up with.

I am glad we did ours as we did, and I've enjoyed watching you and malhgold play with style and color options. Watching the other mixed kitchens develop has made me more certain of my choices as an option rather than a crazy whim or fluke. My home is only 20 years old, but it has some of the character of my first house - nearly 100 years old. I think that's part of why I love it and part of why I wanted something different from the "Tuscan/Old World" kitchen everyone was doing at the time and yet not the "Something's Gotta Give" kitchen that was starting to get attention. The more that and Christopher Peacock have grown in popularity, the more I am glad I did something that wasn't cookie cutter and predictable. I would encourage anyone to consider it.

One of my favorite kitchens on the Gardenweb is Redrange's. She has blue and yellow cabinets, plus, of course, the red range. BTW, she handpainted and glazed all her backsplash tiles herself!

Thanks for this thread! I can't have a seperate section of perimeter cabinets in a different color b/c my perimeter is staying the same (golden maple) but its given me the courage to go with color for my new island (green or yellow probably), which I love, rather than the "safe" eggshell I was seriously considering.
I will head back to the kitchen showroom and pick up the lovely samples of colored cabinets that I loved in the first place.

Oh, do get the color! Yellow might be tricky with the maple, but green would be wonderful. If you love the color, you will love it as part of your kitchen and you will love that your kitchen has more character and more of your personality reflected in it.

caryscott - thank you! I have that magazine and just pulled it out. I don't think I realized that the second kitchen had that beautiful pale blue cabinetry the first time I looked at it. I remember the first kitchen, and I love the red.

garden18c - than you for the TOH link. As rhome mentioned, the green in that kitchen is very similar to what we're considering for ours. I love how all of it looks together.

AKchicago - I love redrange's kitchen too. It's one I always linger on when I'm scanning the finished kitchen blog. I would love to spend time in that space!

Do any of you remember who has the kitchen with the bright green and caribbean blue cabinets? I remember the kitchen had a vintage look overall, but these fantastic, totally unexpected cabinet colors! (I think the doors had inset beadboard panels, if that helps jog anyone's memory.)

AntiqueSilver's greenish black milkpaint & yet unpainted white semi-gloss cabs; cornice is still undecided. The white is a nod to the formality of the 1850's parlor where I put the kitchen & the black is somewhat indicitave of the original woodwork that came from the outside kitchen (plus I wanted black); doors are copies of the originals. In a somewhat panoramic view since I can't seen to get opposite walls in the same photo. One thing about black cabs - they're really hard to photograph unless you have perfect natural light.

Oh, wow! What a beautiful kitchen, AS! I especially love the fireplace wall; it is absolutely amazing!

'Amazing' is not exactly the word my cabinet maker used when I showed him my plans nor when he build it, LOL! Not the word I used either when I painted the inside of the china cabinet - it's slightly under 7' tall x 5' wide & I had to stand inside of it to paint the upper portions. The larger doors on those big cabs are approx the size of regular room doors & weigh about 75# each!

I like more than one color for cabinets, but yesdear's kitchen is beautiful. You could do all white with one cabinet in a different color or wood, like a hutch.

Frankoma, what a great kitchen! The 2 sides seem closely related, but with different personalities in the color, counter, and hardware changes. A really wonderful look, and you pulled it off well. The floor is nice, too.

Here's a not so great shot of my in progress kitchen. I have 3 different color cabinets, 3 door styles and 3 different counters I also used 2 different colors of hardware and mixed it up a bit with a combo of 8 different pulls and handles.

I just love seeing all these uniquely individual kitchens!!! Jenanla, can't wait to see your finished kitchen. Are those black cabs as the upper and frig cabinet?

Yes, the upper and paneled fridge are black (as is the island that I am bringing with me from my existing house).

I can't wait to see my finished kitchen either. We are almost 26 months into this build.

I love the look of David T. Smith kitchens, and this is what worked for my budget.

I used Wellborn Forest Cabinetry

Hutch is Hartford Door,Oak Bordeaux (not so orange in person)
Sink Base is Somerset Door, Maple Bordeaux
Base Cabinets are Middleton Door, Maple Praline
Upper and fridge are Middleton Door, Milan (black) Maple

Hah! I've met someone more mixed up than I am! LOL I only have 2 counters and 2 different hardware styles (5 different pieces).

All of these kitchens have warmth and personality -- they look like functional but loved and comfortable spaces -- at least to me. Not one looks like anyone ran out of money and couldn't do it "right" or designed with a hacksaw.

I do remember seeing a trend before we did our kitchen -- semi-random contrasting finishes and/or trims. Some of what I saw then, especially in displays, did not come off so well. I think that is what most folks are afraid of -- that or getting tired of the color or combination.

Thanks rhome. My choices came more from "I like this and this and this" and less from "does this really work with this?", so that it comes together at all is luck as much as anything. Funny, I just noticed how similar our kitchens are in color...dark wood, soft white/gray/green, maple.

Count me in with those eagerly awaiting the finished photos of your kitchen Jenanla! I have 4 cabinet finishes, 3 kinds of doors, and 3 kinds of counter materials, but you are mixing things around more than I did.

After seeing all of the above kitchens, I'm feeling conservative with only 2 cab colors, 2 BS finishes & 1 hardware choice. I guess I make up for it with 4 natural wood types in the area.
