Color LED light

I currently have a small Sunlite light and niche on the side wall of my pool. I am looking at upgrading that to a color LED model. I am limited because it is a small niche so I can only put a spa light in it. I am looking for the brightest color LED system in the spa form factor. After brightness, reliability and performance would be other desired factors. Which light would you recommend between the Colorlogic, Intellibrite and SAVI (or other?) light and why?

Sunlite was a Sta-Rite light. Pentair acquired Sta-Rite. Pentair makes the the IntelliBrite Spa LED light which has 16 LEDs (more than any other Spa LED light).

I would go with Pentair's IntelliBrite if I were you.

Thanks... It's pretty confusing because searching through the posts some say the Colorlogic is brighter but I've seen you mention the optics/lens on the Intellibrite being superior and that will probably help. It's a roughly 15x30 pool with the light on the long side and the current light does not really fill the pool well. Hopefully the lens on the Intellibrite will help spread that out a bit.

My interest in the SAVI light is that the pool light with 39 LEDs will fit in the spa niche, so from a pure #'s perspective it would seem brighter. But they are concentrated in a cluster behind a clear lens vs spread out behind a special lens so it may make a difference?

I think I'm sold on the Intellibrite over the Colorlogic but I would still love to hear from someone who has seen both the Intellibrite and SAVI.

I'm about to do some limited LED experimentation. Seems the best buy on LEDs that doesn't require soldering is LED xmas lights -- on Ebay, blues are about $8.50 per hundred and reds are about $10.50 (in both cases, including shipping). Probably could have gotten them cheaper in January ;). I got 1,000 blues and 100 reds, since I mainly plan to use it for spring seed starting and winter herb growing. I'm going to affix aluminum foil to an old bit of cheap wood lattice that I had in the garage (including a bit angled at the edges, forming a hood), and loosely attach the LED strands to the "hood". The whole thing will hang from the ceiling, tied with a taut-line so it can be adjusted up and down as the plants grow. Shouldn't be much work -- no soldering, no affixing each individual LED, etc. And the dangling should increase foliage penetration. While sites promoting LED grow lights say that a 90W UFO is equivalent to a 450W HID, what I've seen suggests it's more like a 250W HID. I'll have about 75W of LEDs, but will have spent under $100 (in comparison to ~$225 retail for a UFO). That'll save me ~175W, which on 18/6 light/dark, is 3.15kWh/day, ~95kWh/mo, ~$10.50/mo. Should be a pretty quick payback time in comparison to HID. $4.50 a month in electricity costs sounds reasonable for keeping my seedlings from getting leggy and for getting me more fresh herbs in the winter. If I remember to stop back here, I'll follow up on how it goes.

Depending on your builder, expect a 350 to 450 upgrade to the LED pool lamp replacing an existing lamp. If the pool only included a lamp and your adding a second you can expect 700 to 900, it'll depend on the length of the new lamp's electrical run to the switch, junction box, or the controller's power center. quote" the pool is 32 x 16 sorta kidney shaped with the light in the bend of the middle of the pool. Will one be enough? "quote IMO, no. If you placed it at one end aiming down the middle of the longest length you'd get just best return. But it would look dim from outside the pool. When your inside the pool swimming it'll be fine. If you want light from the side you described you'll need two. One on either side of the bend in the middle and no closer to each other than 10 feet in between the lights. See ya, Kelly

I'm not going to defend the quote you received as I don't know the present condition of your pool , the access to the property, etc..- a 20x40 pool is big. Please understand the scope of the requires time to remove old material and dispose of it and replace it with new material and fixing issues along the way. A new pool is a lot easier. Basically work is being twice. On the surface, the pricing does not seem too crazy. After all, your adding a new spa to an existing structure, an auto cover, which is generally expensive on new construction, to an existing pool. The plumbing, equipment, the full length bench, etc.. carries a fee. You should get 2 more quotes minimum, to compare. Ask for references and look at the contractors past work.

The SAVI probably uses very low power LEDs which will likely show 39 hot spots on your pool or spa floor. From their brochure, they do not seem to have any sort of lens or reflector. Just a clear glass or plexiglass cover:

Another area of concern is that their light is only ETL listed instead of UL listed like the IntelliBrite. Many manufacturers will go the ETL route because it is much easier than getting UL certification. ETL has been telling manufacturers for years that it is OK to use one manufacturer's lights in another manufacturer's niches. Do you know how crazy this is? Lights and niches are engineered and designed to work together from a fit, bonding, grounding, etc. perspective. Do you think ETL does all of the testing to ensure that there will be no problems from installing Brand J, H, P, Etc's lights into Brand J, H, P, Etc's niches? I doubt it. Do you think ETL stays up on all of the changes Brand J, H, or P and others make to their lights and niches? I doubt it.

I would never recommend using a Brand A light in a Brand Z niche or vice-versa! Always use lights and niches from the same manufacturer!
