Do you like them? Dean and Caryn went with a friend last night to find some. Dave was VERY nice to share some of his 'spots'!

I personally can't stand mushrooms...and YES, I have been told that these do not really taste like mushrooms...I don't care, YUCK! lol

Sandy, I got a chuckle out of the "Moral Mushrooms." I'm glad your mushrooms have high ethical standards, but they're usually spelled Morel. :-)

I've never found any to try. Heard they're great, although they look like it would be a challenge to get them clean.

UGGH! I can't even deal with this! I took delivery of 4 yards of mushroom soil today and had a buddy help me cart loads into the beds. Still have 2 yards left to backfill the pond sitting in the driveway under tarps. It's the only space left to fill. He's ready to go. "We can't yet. I haven't been able to catch the remaining babies." "What babies? Give me the damn net. I'll catch them." Twenty minutes later he says "Forget that. You'll never catch those suckers. I'll start hauling more dirt to fill-in." "No, no, you can't. Just leave it in the driveway. I'll deal with it over the weekend. Let me just pay you a few bucks for your help and (be on your way, criminal). Here is a story that should make all of us be just a little guarded and circumspect when posting. No names, town, or country shall be mentioned in the story below. It's to do with orchids. When it comes to the extremes of orchid collections, there are simply no boundaries. But once a collection is garnered, the next thing would be to let the world know about it. How else would one justify the cost of the hobby. In any case, one avid collector found the latter to be a costly proposition. He was so enthused about his collection that he started to seriously take photoslides of his plants and was going around the different clubs showing them off (ok, this was before the days of the internet and when the Kodachrome and the slide carousel ruled supreme). He woke up after one frosty winter's night to find that someone had sneaked into his into his backyard greenhouse, and made off with $20,000 worth of his priced orchid (I suppose that will be about $40,000 in today's money). It was obvious that someone who had expert orchid knowledge, and had really paid attention to his slide shows, saw the golden opportunity. The thief had meticulously picked the rarest, most expensive and the most coveted of his specimens. To this day, the mystery of the disappearing exotic orchids remains unsolved. They have word in their circles for these extremes of fanatic collection and obsession - Orchidelirium; which apparently, is one level of intensity above orchidmania. I doubt us rose gardeners suffer the same security night mares as orchid collectors. That said, I woke up one morning about ten years ago, to find all the emerging rose buds (and other flower buds), cleanly pruned off, and left in piles in my front yard.

Elm seeds anyone??

There are 3 mature elm trees across the back lane from me. Every spring at least some of those seeds fly into my yard. I try to remove as they sprout but there are always some that start growing underneath a shrub or perennial and go unnoticed until next spring. I have a small pond with a few goldfish/koi. A seed blew into the pond and the fish ate it, only to spit it back out. Darn! Definitely tough little trees though, they often start growing in any crack in the cement that has soil exposed. Speaking of Manitoba Maples, my neighbors have one grwoing from seed in the one foot gap between their shed and our fence that we share. I don't think they intentionally planted it there but my worry is that it gets huge and starts to grow over my house. Glen

Alexa, at the risk of being accused of anti Occam's Razor law, let's take a little time to chew the fat. First, the pictures might be a little misleading. I take food pictures using only the auto setting on my camera to save time. Depending on if the light is from the window (day) or from the CFL (night) or if the shot is wide-angle or close-up and the predominant color of the food item, the camera's built-in software takes charge and determines the red/white/blue balance for each picture. The colors on the first two are closer to the real thing. Rack of lamb, very expensive. If you take away the fat, and the bones, and shrinkage, it probably comes to $60.00 a pound here in NYC. Meat, bones and fat have different thermal conductivities, adding to it, the small size and the shape of a rack of lamb, it makes it very difficult to cook it perfectly unless you prefer the whole thing well-done. It is challenging to find a way to maximize perfection to every tiny morsel of this wondrous victual. At the temperature I set at 135F, it is too low to render the fat. Since I don�t eat the fat, it does not bother me just to scrape the fat off while I eat. But if I were to serve others who are not followers of the Paleolithic diet, I probably BBQ the fat a little longer and that will make the issue go away. No, you cannot make Schmaltz using a sous vide cooker. I think it needs to be emphasized that sous vide is merely a particular way of cooking with a special appliance. There is really no recipes for sous vide, no more than recipes for microwave, or cast iron frying pan, etc. It is unfortunate that the French word "sous vide" gives this concept a lot of unjustified mystique; the fact that top chefs and upscale restaurant use it makes it appearing un-approachable. It makes it seem like practitioners of this way of cooking belong to some religious cult. The truth is this: sous vide is just a water oven that can keep constant temperatures. If I were to name this appliance, I would call it "Cookware For Making Perfect Meats For Dummies" If you show a 10-year-old kid how to set the temperature, the kid can cook the meat sous vide just like a top chef. A sous vide cooker simply will not allow you to overcook or undercook, it makes no difference if your piece of meat is frozen on one half and the other half at room-temperature, thick on one end and thin on the other end. No doubt, sous vide is going to go thru similar fade as the microwave oven did. First microwave oven was scosting like $5,000 and there were many myths and fears surrounding these bizarre new electronic "radar ranges." By the seventies, more and more people were finding the benefits of microwave cooking to outweigh the supposedly risks, and none of them were dying of radiation poisoning, going blind, becoming sterile, or impotent. Brenda, you rinse them, dry them and then cut them in half, drag them through beaten eggs and then flour or crushed cracker crumbs and then fry them.....I guess, that is the way DH does them anyway.

They're pretty much gone around here already. Those look kind of old Sandy. Also if they leave the base in the dirt, it makes them easier to clean, and leaves the spores (mushrooms are a fungus)to make more mushrooms next year (so I've been told). They sell for $37.00-$44.00 a lb. I love them. You soak them in salt water for about an hour, change the water, and soak them again in salt water for 1/2 hr. Do the 1/2 hr soak about 3 or 4 times. This gets them very clean. The last soak use plain water. Drain these for a couple hours. I then put them in an egg wash, then coat them with very fine soda cracker crumbs, and fry them in butter. Ummmmmmmmmm Ummmmmmmmmmm. It only takes a few to satisfy you as they are so rich.
Even if you don't like them, you can go mushroom hunting, and sell them, or give them to someone who does like them, but can't hunt them anymore, do to physical problems.

Yes, I like them. We have had two batches this year.

Susan, you cut them in half and soak several hours in salt water to get rid of the bugs and dirt.

We like them this way. Beat eggs in bowl, crush crackers in baggie, melt butter in skillet. Dip clean drained mushrooms in eggs, shake in baggie with crackers, and place in buttered skillet. Fry each side until browned.

I've always been leery of mushrooms since I saw that Clint Eastwood movie a long time ago (you know the one where the girls poison Eastwood with a meal of mushrooms).

I do like the smaller mushrooms in spaghetti sauce or cooked with onions over a steak. Not sure I'd like the Morels.

I love them but was told to soak them in salt water overnight and to rinse the heck out of them to get rid of the bugs. I haven't had them in years and keep missing the morel mushroom festival here in KY.

I've never heard of them before but sound interesting. I am always so scared of wild mushrooms because I have no clue how to tell which are edible and which are poisonous. I stick with the store bought ones.

Those sound so good. I love mushrooms but have always been afraid to pick wild ones. In CA people die from eating poisonous wild mushrooms. Sandy, if you have extras, give me a call.

Oh you lucky dog!!! They are plentiful around here in season, but I cant go hunt them any more,,due to my health. I would kill for a "mess" as Ozarks folks call a batch.If you ever see them, do not fear getting a poison one, as there is no other "shroom" that looks like them. YUMMY!!!!

Yep - the Morel's are a unique mushroom.

That's quite a haul! Do you freeze them? My friend does and has good luck doing that.

I am not all that crazy for them, but if someone gives me some, I enjoy them.

We do have trouble with people trespassing on our land to hunt them. Some people think they have the right to go anywhere and take anything. If we catch them - they have to hand them over.

How do they feel about you walking across their lawn and picking their flowers?

There's a difference?

Folks used to feel that it was O.K. to raid our orchard, beside a sideroad, about 8 miles from town.

Dad told them that it wasn't ... and when he asked them about the comparison relative to the flowers, many of them got rather huffy. Some didn't even see the legitimacy of the comparison!

He found some morels in that orchard, once, and we had them in soup, sort of like oyster soup, which we found quite enjoyable, if I remember correctly - it was about 65 years or more ago.

They are rather a rare delicacy, in this area, I think.

I'll have to ask what kind of flowers they grow, LOL!

You would be amazed at how often people see nothing wrong with opening gates or even cutting fence to hunt or fish without permission.

I have an apple tree in my yard, and I have had people stop and climb the fence to help themselves. Takes all kinds doesn't it :)

Be vwry careful! The "False Morel" appears very much like the "Morel" mushroom. The False Morel is posionous. Learn the difference.

It has been a very long time since my mother took me mushroom hunting, and she gathered morel mushrooms exclusively. Her secret spot was among the rotting logs of an old cabin.

Once you find a patch of morels, they tend to grow in the same spot each year.

My grandma was an avid shroom hunter. YUMMY! Unfortunately I don't really know which ones are good to eat, and which ones are poisonous. Thus, I don't hunt shrooms.
