anyone willing to help me choose a red paint? please vote!

hi... i think it's going to be red paint, kids! it's tough with monitor colors, but they're pretty close on mine. the colors read slightly darker in the kitchen.

we have an interior kitchen with no windows! so we don't want to go too dark and make a cave. i'm going for cheerful but not clownish. :)

a) "red"

b) tricycle red

c) million dollar red

this is my inspiration photo. NOTE: my kitchen will look NOTHING like this! i just liked the colors/textures.

cabs are creamy/ivory, with light gray quartz countertops and (likely) cork floors in the darker color. possibility of stove side having cherry countertops. remember, NO WINDOWS!

and the fallback (chicken out) color "blue hydrangea".

Hi, I like the last one best. My fav's are raisin reds but there was someone on decorating forum who had the best red ever in her living room. I wish I could remember who it was.

I like the tricycle red the best.

But if you do chicken out, I LOVE the hydrangea (but I'm a blue person)

Joanne, I think you are absolutely on track by getting all of the elements together to see what looks best. I took AGES to pick the paint color in my guest bedroom. The reason I was so cautious that time was I picked the color for the back bedroom just by looking at paint chips against the wall, in natural daylight and at night with the electric lights. The color didn't end up being ANYTHING like I expected when painted all over the walls. And it didn't go with the other pieces in the room like I thought it would. Plus looked different because I had to paint the trim too, (the PO's son had painted the trim in that room hyperlink blue!). With the guest room, the wall color looked great. Then, I had the floor sanded and refinished, and the floor color ended up being totally different than it had been before, throwing the look of the walls off again, as they looked different contrasted against the different floor color. I'd get something approximating what you think the new roof color will be, and yes, try to find something approximating the mulch color. Will you be using the same type of mulch as you have now? If you're going to make a big investment in this block, don't feel guilty about really taking your time. Also don't feel guilty about looking some more. In that guest bedroom story above, I looked at paint swatches from five different companies. The brick that I hate in my backyard patio just came from the one company my landscape designer worked with. I was overwhelmed by the brick issue so I let her make all the decisions for me, something that was a mistake because she wasn't really going all out to find the best options. Mine was a small job so I'm sure it wasn't worth the trouble to her to spend time searching for the perfect patio block for me. She just basically said take it or leave it and I had already invested time and money in her so I didn't want to throw a wrench in the machine, but now I am stuck with something I don't like, that cost 4K so I am pretty much stuck with it forever. I will not be able to justify tearing that out when I have so many other big ticket items in my house that need attention. If this is a once in a lifetime do-over for your yard, you have a right to take as much time as you need!!

MetroMom- FYI: There is a post on the remodel forum from someone who bought a home with a painted brick exterior. I remebered reading it so I searched and found it! You may want to read his post before you proceed. Slate is pretty cool - we just purchased a house with 100-year-old slate countertops in the butler's pantry. They have gotten substantial use over the years as the primary food preparation spot, and they look great. We don't seal them, for what it's worth, and they don't stain. Don't know if that's because they're so old they have accumulated sufficient "patina"? We put hot pots on them all the time with no adverse effects. They do have a few small chips, but it's very livable. (I love the softer texture -- but then, I really dislike granite, so take that into account.) In fact I thought these counters were soapstone the first 6 months we lived here, until I saw the Monson Slate label on the bottom of them. For me, the biggest consideration is actually about the dark color: I find it really hard to keep them looking clean, because they show the slightest fleck and crumb. They're like a dark floor. In that sense, a soapstone with its mottling and veining might be preferable to the matte black/gray/green? Get some samples and test, test, test!

Thundersweet, The oringinal pictures of the islands shows the "farmhouse island" in red with a dark butcher block top! And there is also a cool little red stool behind it. Anyway, if you have red throughout your house plus red appliances it seems you like a little bling here and there. You would want a real dark red, maybe with a black glaze or wash over it so it doesn't overpower the space. It could just add that right amount of "spice". However, your style is clean and simple, Amish like, very nice and comforting, so I can see the Pasons island fitting in very well with your style. Now you gotta ask yourself, do you want to keep the kitchen style as is or do you wanna add some bling? But here's the thing, it's a painted finish so either way you go it can always be painted another color!

The tricycle red is more rosy on my screen. It seems more cheerful to me, but I'm not sure if that would look the best with the grey tops. What color grey will they be? Have you decided?

We just used the Million Dollar Red (Benjamin Moore, right?) on a door with glass inset and exposed beam in a loft-like space that has only one natural light source. We love it and are happy with the choice. If you can't decide, you can buy a small tin of paint for about $6 and paint some plywood and see how it looks. good luck!

I vote for the tricycle red, because it will look darker in your kitchen anyway. I like all of them, but that tricycle red is softer, which is nice.

My weekend experiment: I was looking at wallpaper in Menard's when my lightbulb went on. I went to the kitchen dept. and got my door, held it up by the papers I had chosen and it was easy to see which ones worked. The one I liked the best didn't but choice #2 did. I am sure eventually I won't care if everything looks just perfect together, in other houses I've lived in I saw something I liked and used it without considering exactly how it looked with other elements in the room. Wall color = wall color but for this first time I was aware of the color with my cabinets. Some shades just worked better. In your case I'd do the sample paints on the wall before I painted everything. Even though they are so close in color they will look totally different in your room with your other choices. Remember the white thread a few weeks ago?

I would never step in between a red freak and her paint chips. Any of them will work, I'm sure, but the middle one is definitely more "cherry"/blue on my monitor.

I've got "burnt terra cotta" by our local Hershfields (Minn.) paint company. Brownish red without the tomato aspect. You've probably seen it in my postings. It's working well. I'm finding that it is more forgiving and relaxing than "real" red. Even in my old supposedly red kitchen, the reds were in the flooring, the sink, and the decorative pieces but the walls were linen wallpaper; this is my first red paint kitchen. It's funky and it's happy.
