Cabinets are in, Crown Molding Help Needed

My Kitchen Cabinets are now in. My ceiling is slightly crooked, so the space above my cabinets goes from 2.5" to 3.5" depending on the cabinets. I am using a large 6" crown in the rest of the house, so that would be too big to use on the cabinets.

Has anyone used a smaller molding on the cabinets, and then made a return, and then started a larger molding?

I'm going to see if I can bump you. I had similar problems with uneven ceilings, wall, and one soffit. My contractor had to deal with it and it's not too noticeable if you don't look close. However, I couldn't even begin to tell you how to handle

My ceiling height is also uneven, almost as much as yours, IIRC. We handled it by using 3-piece crown molding...but our crown molding is 5-1/2" to 6" deep.

The molding consists of top & bottom molding all the same size throughout the kitchen. In the middle is flat "filler" piece that varies in height, depending on the ceiling height. By varying this filler piece's height, you accommodate the different ceiling heights w/o affecting the crown itself...this way the difference isn't noticeable. If you vary the crown piece's height, it will be much more noticeable...especially if it has any detailing at all.

In general, the smaller the area that needs to be "crowned", the more noticeable ceiling height differences are.

Here's the design of my crown molding:

The "Stock-S" piece is the "filler" piece...simply a flat piece of the same wood my cabinets are and finished the same as the cabinets (i.e., filler!)

You've got several problems. If you buy more of the same crown from your cabinet company, you'll still have to deal with the gap above the corner cabinet. If you raise the existing crown to the ceiling, it's very unlikely you'd find unpainted crown that matches it's size and profile, plus you'd then have to deal with a gap between the cabinets and the bottom of the crown. Here's what I would do. Choose the new crown mold you want for the rest of the room and measure it's height (how far down from the ceiling it comes). Make a mark on the wall at that height, then use a level to transfer that height to the stained crown and mark it. Then, trace the old, existing crown's profile onto the wall with a pencil. Now you have a mark where the bottom of the new crown will intersect the old crown, and another mark where the old crown will have to be narrowed to fit underneath the new. Carefully remove the stained crown from the corner cabinet. Next, build a frame above the corner cabinet that's the same height as the new crown, and that extends beyond the cabinet to the point at which the new crown will intersect the old. Now, install the new, painted crown around the kitchen and across the new soffit. Last, run the old crown through a table saw and cut it down so that it fits underneath the new crown. With me? This is a tough one to visualize.

ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.

You could use a 2x4 to bump out the cabinets over the range, adding additional lumber to get the right depth so that the crown molding can hit the sides of the cabinets on the right and left side of the ones over the range. The sides of the cabinets over the range will then have to be flush finished as they will be partially exposed. I would replace the 24" double door cabinet with a second 21" cabinet to the left of the range. That will bring symmetry to the design. Additional crown molding will need to be cut and installed. This project is salvageable. I concur with dcarendt and would say the style of crown molding clashes with the door and window molding. I would definitely change the crown molding style.

here is a picture from our renovation. Not sure this is what you are looking for but this is how my contractor solved the cabinet crown meets room crown problem.

My ceilings were uneven about 1/4 inch. My DH used
caulk. I got some great information on Gardenweb
the woodworking forum.

Well, since you have full overlay cabinets, you are going to need a filler piece at the top that goes vertically so the actual crown has something to attached to.

I did a 2 piece crown that is similar to Buehl's. I have a vertical piece and then the crown. The change in the ceiling height affects the amount of the vertical piece that is showing. THe crown is all level but if you look closely you can see the vertical piece showing changes around the room. It worked pretty well for me...was the best option we could come up with.
