just ripped out ugly green stair carpeting!
Comments (28)You have the same wood on my stairs when I pulled up my ugly green carpet. The treads are yummy oak and the risers are crappy pine like yours. Why they didn't use all oak??? I was ecstatic that I had a good wooden staircase that I could refinish and not have to re-carpet. My house is from the 1975. I scrubbed them good with a bleach water solution, puttied over screws in risers, sanded, stained and sealed the wood. I didn't paint my risers, but I would recommend it. Mine stained the same, but I know they are two different woods and the risers don't look as nice as the treads to me. But nobody has said anything and my kids would of. I would of painted the risers, but painted risers remind me of a colonial style staircases and I don't have a colonial home. I did mine 2 years ago and they are not showing any sign of wear....See MoreHow to get a heavy older TV down the stairs and out of the house?
Comments (74)Elizabeth, my comments were based on my experiences. Not too many years ago, I offered an old CRT large screen TV we'd decommissioned to the salvadoreño who does work in and around our house. He chuckled and said in half Spanish and half English that his extended family had pooled their money to buy a big screen TV at Costco for the men to watch futbol and for the evening shows for the women in the family. My last visit to the cable store was to return a settop TV box (after I'd switched to DISH). The people in front of me in line were modestly dressed Spanish speaking women who paid their bills in cash, using mostly singles and also coin change. When people are spending extended time at the counter because of the need to count and recount cash, it's not hard to see what's going on. As you said, you and most others pay these bills with autopay or another online means. Those who are illiterate, or who don't have the credentials to get a bank account, pay bills in cash. And such people are typically hard working folks of very modest means. That was what I saw....See MoreLight to go with entryway, change out light over stairs
Comments (5)To me it looks strange to have two hanging lights so close - no matter what they looked like. I don't like the look of a hanging fixture in a window from the outside either. How about just a recessed light in the stair well? But I do have one question. Is there a full wall between the stair well and the entry hall or is a half wall or just a railing behind a skinny pole?...See MoreHelp Help with picking out flooring for stairs
Comments (5)Carpet is probably the cheapest option. There will be a lot of labor to prepare the steps for another type of flooring and install it. The overhangs will have to be cut off. Make sure that your flooring choice has matching nosings and consider what you want on the risers. The old carpet lasted 16 years. Get a nice looking low nap carpet and be done with it....See MoreRelated Professionals
