Nice chest! I would take out the bottom-most drawer and the divider rail between it and the very bottom drawer, and make that the place for a basket. I think the taller basket will look more like it is supposed to be that way. Or else I would make a shelf there, still the height of two drawers. Either way, you would have enough of the original pulls.

Yes, that furniture is purdy--especially that piece! My DD now has the NS, desk/hutch and dresser/mirror. (I had the canopy bed as a kid and that's still at my parents' house.) My furniture is not quite so yellowed though. I wonder how that happens?

FWIW, my parents bought me that set sometime in the early 70s. I think it was "Dixie" furniture IIRC and that it was purchased at Treasures for Your Home in Marietta. I've only seen it a few other times. Very solid stuff. Mine has laminate surfaces--great for kids.

We want details....how much? A basket is a GREAT idea.....pulls close to what's already there to keep with the style.....What color paint seems to be selling for you? Black? White? We want details......:0)

As far as what's selling, it's a mixed bag, I have had FP style furniture sell that was redone (BM Linen White) and it sold WELL as in top dollar, then I had another FP set that I was about to paint but someone came along and wanted it just as it was and it was more like this one, with the yellowish look. I have also had a good bit of stuff not painted that sold well too. Just depends on what it is really.

The last lingerie chest that I had (completely different style) as you might recall was redone as a ballardized black. But I'm seeing this one in a creamy white, with rubbed off edges and some antiquing/glaze... OR????

I know becky would cast a vote for turquoise (justwannabme)which is definitely a possibility. But since I will most likely resell it, I guess I'm more inclined to go more neutral (black or white/cream).

OK, I paid $5 for it ;) hee hee...I will definitely keep you all posted on what I come up with. I have some great vintage style (remakes) from Hobby Lobby, they are not exactly the swing handle type but they would look really neat on it.

and then some little round flower looking ones (iron/metal ones) antiqued...these pulls would also be antiqued ivory/cream, of course I'll hunt for just the right ones, and I could get lucky and find another piece that I can share or trade it's pulls.

I agree with the two bottom shevles being the holders for basets. I also like the cream vintage look idea OR a neat grayish green color that when you rub a bit off you leave what is underneath!

Sounds like what you do is a ton of fun!

Amy, I have rented a booth at a local antique mall where I sell stuff, mostly vintage decor and furniture. I dont have true antiques, but have come across some great vintage pieces that I have bought and resold *usually for a decent profit* That may require a major overhaul, or maybe just a good cleaning and some Restore a Finish.

I do enjoy it. I especially love the "buying" part and finding the deals..just ask my DH...lol.

But I also really enjoy painting and finishing furniture. I find it very therapeutic and relaxing. It's also fun to do creative things.

I would consider amputating it above the fourth drawer and putting a top on that, and then turnining the upper, more ornamental drawer and top into something else.

whoa, that's way beyond my carpentry/woodworking skills/abilities. not to mention that I dont have the right tools to do that kind of "plastic surgery"

I think I will FIRST try to find a basket that fits one of the missing drawers, seemingly one of the lower ones, and if that doesn't "look" right, I'll move on from there.

I may also be able to get a local woodworking guy from the mall to build me a matching drawer face and/or drawer. If I just use a drawer face, I could attach it with the kind of hinges that would allow it to open and lay out flat and close up with a magnetic thingie on the chest. (not sure what that is called). but that type of opening might be better up higher? underneath drawer 1?

Anyway, I'll keep searching for ideas so if anything else comes to you, please let me know.

how do you think this color would look? The color on this chest is a bit darker than Polar Ice (BM) I color matched Polar Ice and added components that are in Polar Sky to the mix and came up with something very similar. This little chest has the flowery knobs I was thinking of too

I don't post here very often, but...I would do away with the three bottom drawers and add baskets or the bottom two and use one tall basket. If you put just one basket in the bottom, it would be too obvious you were trying to cover up for a missing drawer.

rjinga.....I need your expert advice. I came home today with this little french country nightstand....LOVE IT! Looks a lot like some of yuor pieces. ($7.50) It's missing a handle. Do you have an online sourece to buy these "old" matching handles or a source for CHEAP handles?

nicole, wow, GREAT FIND!! I'd have snatched that one up in a heart beat too!!! As for knobs/pulls, I have found a few online sites (google searching for vintage pulls), which so far I have not had to buy from, because so far believe it or not, hobby lobby's inventory has worked well for me, and HL sells some pretty decent looking vintage repo's that when on sale (50%) are very affordable. I have also taken a chest like this and instead of trying to replace/match the pulls, have added glass knobs.

here's an example of stuff I have redone and what I did to replace missing pulls: This chest presented a problem in that with the curved fronts, the pulls that I found would not fit properly on the drawer. I considered drilling new holes and placing the knobs that I used (HL) more centered, but I polled many of the dealers in the mall as well as the new owner of this set and she liked them where they are and they really are a very good match. And IRL it looks great (even if the pics dont tell that story as well).

I'd just get creative and try to find something to coordinate. If you are lucky enough to find an exact match, that would be great. BUT...that's a tall order.

Notice the little periwinkle nightstand, it was also missing a knob on top, so I just changed them out for new glass knobs instead. I think it's ok this way!

and make it a book shelf for your craft books.

In back of the books make a secret compartment. :)

cant see the close up details, at first glance it doesn't look bad to me like that. but if your knobs have details to them, you might be better of with something solid (glass) so as not to compete or clash with the design of the pulls.

nicole, here are some of the pulls from HL that I have found and used, easy to antique them or paint them too for a lighter look. When on sale they are a few bucks each.

I may try to clean it up (with something one of the mall dealers told me about, called cotton cleaner) it's for wood and it has a creamy base, so it's not harsh on the wood at all. I used it to clean up a curly maple chest I got and it turned out FABULOUS...

It will require some sanding, so I dont think I can really keep it as it is...it will have some "raw" sanded spots...so I'm just not sure about trying to keep it as it is.
