Question for today April 18

Have you ever made a quilt top and then just not LIKED it?

I sure have! My step mom bought the fabric for an Irish Chain and the two colors of the top matched fine but then she wanted to add a third color to the border and the yellow she picked was about three shades to light. It drove me CRAZY!!!! Also the top had a forest green with these pink,yellow and white bugs (mosquitoes) on it that were hideous. I was never so glad to finish that quilt and get it out of my house.

Yes, and it's still a quilt top sitting in a UFO pile.

You bet!! and I still have it in a box, maybe someday I will think of a way to either improve it or cut up and use the fabric pieces in some other way. Don't you just hate when something like that happens?

Hi everyone! It's been raining in Scotland this weekend. Yesterday went to a motor show and froze my tail off with high winds...I was starving (think it's getting on to that TOM...I am always hungry before it starts. Doubt I have lost any weight but I am comfortable in my current reduced clothes. I know I ate too much yesterday - too much. Another week of good eating and yesterday - oh oh! Struggling but not giving up. Today going for a walk to the garden centre - ran out of compost and have a ton of seed packets so needless to say will be placing another delivery order. Might drag my wheely bag with me and get some smaller bags of compost that I can drag home...and of course if there are any plants that need to be rescued! Today is a new day and I have to get outdoors, get moving and get planning some soup for the next few days, get some lighter meats out and have some yogurt. Really did not want to post yesterday after everything...I felt so bad about myself afterwards but this morning I thought - get yourself back on the board, be honest, get it off my chest and get moving today. I have lost 14 - 17 pounds which puts me at the halfway point of my overall goal and struggling to get things moving. Here we go - glad to read everyone is still sticking with it and making progress. No matter how small the steps are they still put us one step ahead of where we were. Looking forward to the garden centre, going to get moving and scrubbing things today. Biggest challenge next week - staying active mentally at work - some days are boring and I could munch all day - so I drink lots of water and go to the loo a lot. Have a fabby day today! McPeg

Hot Cross Buns 2 eggs 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 4 cups Gold Medal Better for Bread flour 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine or quick active dry yeast 1/2 cup dark raisins 1/2 cup golden raisins 1 egg 2 tablespoons cold water Icing 1 cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon milk or water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, if desired Break 2 eggs into 2-cup measuring cup. Add enough water to measure 1 1/3 cups. Measure carefully, placing egg mixture and remaining bun ingredients except raisins, 1 egg and cold water in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Add raisins at the Raisin/Nut signal or 5 to 10 minutes before last kneading cycle ends. Select Dough/Manual cycle. Do not use delay cycle. (Total time will vary with appliance and setting.) Remove dough from pan, using lightly floured hands. Cover and let rest 10 minutes on lightly floured surface. Grease cookie sheet or two 9-inch round cake pans. Divide dough in half. Divide each half into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball. Place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet or 1 inch apart in pans. Snip a cross shape in top of each ball, using scissors. Cover and let rise in warm place about 40 minutes or until double. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.) Heat oven to 375 F. Beat egg and cold water slightly; brush over tops of buns. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet or pans to cooling rack. Cool slightly. In medium bowl, mix all icing ingredients until well blended. Stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until smooth and spreadable. Make a cross on top of each bun with icing. Serve warm. You may substitute the dark or golden raisins in this recipe with equal amounts of the more traditional currants or try chopped candied fruit. I've been working on a Dresden Plate, off and on, for years! I machine pieced the petals, and hand appliqued them, and the centers, to the background fabric. I couldn't figure out the "freezer paper technique", so I lightly traced the pattern's top curves onto the front of the petals. I turned under the edges with my fingers just enough to hide the pencil marks and basted them down with bigger stitches. I then pinned the plates to the background and hand appliqued them. Ditto for the round centers. So far, it's turning out nice. I'm using YLI silk thread for the applique. It glides through the cotton like butter. I've been lurking here for ages. I'm amazed at all the quilts shown here. Mine are rather simple and old fashioned. I have four more plates to applique, then I'll have enough for either two twin beds or one queen. I just have to decide whether to surprise two young nieces, or one older one! LOL I hope to get a quilt made for each of my four brothers/SILs and each of my 10 neices, nephews, and "greats."

I probably won't get much sewing done this weekend. My mother came in this morning. My son and daughter in law also came in. We went to an old old restaurant in Chattanooga called Bea's for a late lunch. 4 cousins also went with us. It's one of those old southern restaurants that have a lazy susan in the middle of the table and keep the food piled high. They were serving fried chicken, bbq, chicken and dumplings, okra, sliced tomatoes, stewed potatoes, slaw, potato salad, greens, pinto beans, rolls, corn bread and cherry cobbler. The restaurant has been in business since the early 60's with the same lazy susan tables. Best fried chicken in the area. You eat all you want for a moderate price. Mom will be here until sometime Sunday, so I won't be in the sewing room until after she leaves. Jackie

I have two: the sampler quilt I made with my first real quilting class; I realized that I really don't like most sampler quilts; and the second, a show challenge using some William Morris reproduction fabric; I learned never to take on a show challenge if I didn't like the fabric that had to be used.

Barbara, do you know a nice dog or cat that would like the quilt or part of it as their own personal quilt to lay on?

Oh yes. I bought a inexpensive quilt kit (3' x 4') and it looked cute in the picture but when it was done it wasn't cute. It is now used as my outdoor kitty's quilt in her cat house, (a small dog house). SHE loves it!

Sort of. I usually start out with fabric I like, then pick a pattern, so the situation usually takes care of itself. However, I did do an half dozen or more piece-worked pillowslips in different patterns to sort of test fly them, and picked out a palette in pinks I thought were beautiful together for one pair. Well, maybe so, but it doesn't really fit in any room in my house and because of that, I usually hide it under other pillows because it sticks out like a sore thumb. I never even bothered to make its mate. Blech.

Yup! It's finally made it onto the quilt frame 3-4 years later & is going to be a practice quilting with rulers project. It's been on the 'to-do' list for 2 months now...that's how much I dislike this quilt!

Oh, it was a BOM win. The focus fabric was sunflowers on a purple background, and the block had arrows pieced into it in yellows/oranges/greens or purples. There was no way I could make it an organized scrappy, though I did try!

I have 2 tops from when I was a member of a quilt guild, one I won the blocks, one I picked the fabrics and the members made the blocks. I put them togeather and can't bring myself to give them away because I know the effort that went into them, as well as being signed by the members, but so far I just have been unable to finish them.
I wouldn't say they are hidious but just not me. Jayne

Teresa, I have two cats, and they have their OWN quilts, both have cat-nip sewed into them! They each have another quilt they sleep on in their personal chairs!! Spoiled!!

I was at a quilting class at the guild today and the teacher showed how to take those quilts you don't like and make scrappies with them.. very cleaver. I may do that to my hated quilt. Who knows it may look miles better when done!

I bought a beautiful (so I thought) Hoffman fabric for the background of a Double Irish Chain. It had a deep purple background, with purples, greens, and yellows making up a beautiful, large Iris floral pattern. The quilt was going to be a Mother's Day gift for my Mom...the Iris-growing goddess.
I picked out a bright yellow to match the Iris' beards, and a purple batik to form the center chain which was bordered by the bright yellow on each side.

I made all the blocks and sewed them together. Thinking I'd tease Mom with the beautiful fabric, I sent her a square of each fabric and a sample pieced together in simple strips. I asked her what she thought of the colors because "I might use them to make something."

She said "That's the most horrible fabric and color combination I've ever seen."

Gulp.

I gathered up the top, the borders, and all the scraps, and gave them to a neighbor. She had admired the partially finished quilt; I told her if she would finish it, it was hers. She was thrilled.

Thank goodness.

Mom got earrings that year! LOL She still has no clue (and never will have) that I had bought those fabrics and made a top for her!

Caroline, I laughed out loud when I read your story. At least you found out before you gave your mom that quilt!

I once made a watercolor wall hanging quilt with very small squares. When it was on my design board it looked great, but I didnÂt think about my seams. When I sewed it all together, many areas didnÂt blend at all because part of the "blended" colors were lost in my seam allowance. It is an unfinished top and I just didnÂt know what to do with it.

Now, thanks to this post, I think IÂll practice a new quilting pattern and put some catnip in it!
