Starting over with countertops! Please help :)

I don't know if you've seen that I had to make some pretty major changes to my floor plan, due to some roof line issues.

Anyway, kitchen is now very different and I really need some good ideas for countertops! Here's the plan...and I'm open to any suggestions. I still want white cabinets and I'd like to incorporate lots of plants, some blues, greens and yellows.

Also, the wood stove and seating are on the sunroom/screened porch...not shown, but 'north' of the kitchen.

LL, is that a raised eating bar on your prep area bar? If you want granite, but are afraid to have it near the fry zone, you could put it just one the raised bar part, and formica on the rest of the bar.

Hi LL,

I am confused, I have been gone a few days only popping in
for a quick check in and have not read your past posts.
I knew you had changes but did not know you were thinking
a different counter material.

What about blue? Are you still thinking about blue?
And I thought you did not like granite. You liked formica,
corian, cesearstone, cambria... I could be totally lost.
Forgive me.

I like your floor plan, and I do get it. I wanted huge
changes in my space. Taking down wall so that I could have
an island rather than pennisula. Changing my range area
so that I could put in a large hood. ...
But NO, life got in the way. DH reminded me this is not
our forever home. We need to pay for college. We are not
here for the long haul. As soon as my youngest is gone to
college we are off to Europe to try an experience living
abroad. I know all too well the constraints. Dreams vs.
reality.

So, fill me in. What is going on as far as colors?
Ideas? And materials?

Thinking of you and loving your project. It will be
beautiful just wait and see.

So right to the point MRR, not snarky at all!! hydro, you said you had a "modern design style" so I am assuming the house, or at least the interior, is of modern design but it's difficult to relate your landscape to your house without at least a photo. It's important in landscape design to know your client and how their home and lifestyle indoors relates to the outdoor world. You have a long list of "wants" which is OK but try to simplify and think about the space before trying to cram alot into the area you have. Many of the areas can be combined into functional blocks, ie. entertaining can incorporate the firepit, patio, pergola, etc. From your description of your lifestyle, this seems it should be the focus of your design. The dog area can include your lawn area (dogs love grass), shade and privacy issues, perhaps a dedicated doggie garden where he can romp and a high hedge will provide shade for him and you and shelter from the neighbors. A veggie garden can be achieved through containers on your patio or small raised beds near your kitchen door. The closer to the house the better. A water feature that is portable may be ideal for you. A small fountain can provide you the sound and ambience of moving water without the committment of inground waterworks. You might enjoy it near your patio or find it irritating! Some people don't like to hear running water 24/7! You might want to start small and see how you like it. Think about how it would relate to your other functional spaces. Do you want to hear running water while you are entertaining? Or would you rather have music playing while enjoying dinner on the patio? Would you like to have the water in a quiet corner of the yard where it could have a meditative feel? Or maybe you could have a water feature/dog waterer combo!!! (not joking here!) Enjoy the process, ask a lot of questions, and let us know how it turns out!

nandina - actually, our house was traditional 3-coat cement stucco, it was just done completely wrong by a builder who had no clue what he was doing. We actually had one expert who flew up from Wilmington to assess our house - he was one of the guys that discovered the synthetic stucco problem. But the problem is not just confined to synthetic stucco - now that I've learned more than I ever wanted to about stucco and proper flashing practices, I see tons of houses around here that have (or are going to have) the same problems. Sad. karin - The root problem is solved - we ripped every bit of stucco, sheathing, and insulation out of the house and had it down to studs and drywall. Everything that went back on was properly flashed and we took extra precautions such as a rainscreen to insure that water that gets behind the siding will be able to drain. Your question of how much foundation planting we really need is a good one - that's why I was thinking more of perennials (ferns and hostas) along the front - if it dies back in the winter, so be it. I think the house looks much better with no landscaping than it did with the big overgrown bushes. I know that I definitely don't want the traditional yew, holly, and barberry bushes that everybody seems to have around here. However, since you seem to know a lot about evergreens, can you recommend a few that won't grow much more than 3-5 ft tall and are very dense? I'd like to at least get the bushes in to screen the A/C units before winter as they're quite ugly. And I wouldn't mind one or two in the front just so it's not completely bare in the winter, but I'd want them to stay lower than the windows. I'm in zone 6 (think I forgot to say that in my first post). I do have to do something - we don't get a ton of snow and the lawn will be a muddy disaster if I don't get something done - it's only been a few weeks since the drainage work started and I'm vacuuming and cleaning floors about five times as much as I used to. What don't you like about the vinca lawn idea? My landscaper isn't fond of it either, but that's because he told me he hates spending 3 days planting thousands of vinca plants. I don't mind if it spreads - I've got about 3 acres of lawn and another 2 of meadow (lawn I don't mow, basically), and I really want to add something else interesting to break up the sea of grass.

Try searching for info about this: imidacloprid insecticides It is the currently the world's most common pesticide and used quite liberally. Except some parts of Europe have banned it's used because links to CCD (one of the actions it has is compromising an insect's immune system, which is thought to leave bees open to diseases that have been present all along) I haven't had luck yet figuring out how to clean hives after this occurs. But I suspect if imidacloprid is the main contributing factor leading to their vulnerability to pathogens, it won't make much difference if it's still being used in the area. It's marketed under many names and is also in lawn grub treatment - and commonly used in golf courses, etc.

(I think that some may not realize your exterior is mirrored to your floorplan, at least I think so--it isn't a direct match either way though, as I look at it more closely). LL's interior changes are better. So are yours--with the change of stair. I'm just not sure if that stair actually will work in the space (someone like Renovator will need to count them and tell you). But, you still have 3 ways to get from back hall to other places in the house: back hall, pantry, kitchen, out back hall, past fridge, past island stools, past dining chairs and out back hall, closet, utility, foyer, out. It is very circuitous. And, the most cramped option is probably the intended option (past fridge, past stools, past dining table). Just my observation.

with your colors-are u going countryfrench or the like? perhaps a warmer white than your cabs-there are lots of biscuit and linen shades of corion, silestone, quartz, etc.
or if you have a med hardwood floor-maybe a little rustic, you could do a darker toned counter-fairly even pattern-to blend with the floor.could go any direction-looks like a pretty space.

Marti- That's a good idea...I have thought of mixing countertops a bit, but I'm not real fond of granite...although I have seen a few that look very much like marble!

Boxerpups- Living abroad? That sounds wonderful! :)

I still like the same colors, but now that the kitchen is smaller and only open to the dining area (not the seating area and woodstove) I may stick with more neutrals and add color with accessories. I still like butcher block and marble and formice (LOL...what a combo!) but I'm not sure yet, what I want to use in this space. Any ideas?

Herbflavor- I do like the warmer white for the cabinets, but I'll probably have white appliances...of course, that's not such a big deal, now that the peninsula is hiding them a bit.

The other thing is....I'm still not sure about the dishwasher. I really don't like it right next to the fridge. Now that I have the prep area on the other side of the stove, I might move it to the right of the sink...any thoughts?
