When was the last time you oiled your sissors?

My Wiss shears that my mom gave me more than 30 yrs ago was dragging just didn't have a smooth blade action today after fighting with the sissors for over a year off and on I remembered Daddy used to oil our sissors once in awhile.

Plain old 3 in 1 oil or sewin machine oil works wonders Just takes a dab of oil too around the screw thingy that holds the sissors together maybe a little down the blades just for good measure.

After I oiled my shears I remembered my pinking shears had been useless last time I tried to use them very tight and just chewing thru the fabric so I got them out oiled them worked the blades back and forth a few times. I CAN USE THEM NOW lol

It has me wondering how many has went out bought new sissors when all they needed was a couple drops of oil and to work the blades a few times. Very easy cheap rememdy much cheaper than buying new sissors.

I never knew that you were supposed to oil your scissors. I should try that on my pinking shears as they also drag on the fabric. Colleen

Oiling pinking shears is certainly a cheaper solution to having them sharpened (if you can even find someone to do it!)!!!

There's nothing quite like a fine, large pipe organ. I'll tell a semi-personal story about the big one at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. It's supposed to be an unusual one. One of my aunts used to play that one w-a-a-a-y back in the 1920s. (1930s?) Well, when it was new. She had a regular radio program that was broadcast from the theater. It was before my memory times, so I never got to hear it. But I always wanted to. Anyway, a tour group was going from here to Atlanta to see the play, "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" at The Fox. I just had to go in hopes of seeing the organ. Much to my delight there was a mini-concert before the show. It is really a wowser of an organ. Modern electronic organs can put out some great sound, but you just can "feel" the music move as you can with a pipe organ.

Seriously, Honestly? I go to the Gallery and spend hours and hours going over all the latest pictures that Oceanna posted. Today, a little over 3 hours at the Gallery (Gee, thanks Oceanna! *wink*). Got nothing, zippo, nada done. Way too many ideas doing Funny Car crashes in my grey matter for me to make a firm decision on my projects so might as well go look-see everyone elses projects. Actually, truth be told there is no name for my 'style'. Believe me, I've searched. No way to describe it online so that I can get a decent search going. Because there is no name for my style, I come to a point where I get stuck ----- (the fact that my ideas have to be done on a miniscule budget makes it all that more difficult.) Kitchen not finished --- going on 15 months. Backyard/Garden Decor not done --- going on 7 months. Family Room not done --- going on 20 months. Sunroom not done --- going on 28 months. Master Bedroom not done -- going on 9 months. (Won't count the Master bath because in all fairness, we just started it. But I'm sure I'll come to a grinding halt there, too.) Why? Because I'm stuck, can't make a decision and stick to it because I can't find ideas for what I see in my mind's eye. I know there's got to be inspiration out there for what I'm trying to create but so far, haven't found it. I get ideas, tips and opinions from all the talented folks here and put them into play and all starts looking good but to head to the finish line? Nope. Isn't happening. So, I go to all the neato new photos on the Gallery side, thanks to Oceanna, kill a ton of time and not get a thing accomplished. Then I feel guilty for not accomplishing anything and I start the whole process over again. Amity, who is heading over to the gallery, again. lol

Soapstone fans: When was your first time...oiling?

Make sure to not get any silicone on the soapstone as that area will not darken up when oiled. I usually tape off sinks and backsplashes for this reason, Another thing most granite guys do not have to do. Don't seal soapstone, it's a waste of time and money. Don't oil before you put your adhesive on as it will not stick or bond if oil is present. Silicone loves soapstone so it will work very well.

I was about 12 years old, and was taking a test in school, when the principle came to the door and said there was an incident I was involved in, and needed to come to the office. I had no idea what he was talking about. The teacher said as soon as I finished the test, he would send me. My mind went blank and I couldn't concentrate. I am sure I failed the test. I went to the office and when I got there, a little neighbor girl of ours, age about 6, was there and her older brother. (Small school...all grades in one building). The story was that when I was walking to gym class the day before, and walked through the recess yard where younger children were playing, I picked up this little girl's dress and looked at her panties and called her a "debbil". I didn't even know what a debbil was...I thought it was a bad word that I didn't know the meaning of. Later, I figured out she meant that I had called her a "devil". I don't know why that little girl said that. The idea that I would lift up her skirt to see her panties was mind boggling. But, she had said that...and told her parents, who called the school and, hence, I was in the princple's office being questioned about it. I was crying and I couldn't remember even seeing her the day before. Supposedly other kids saw it, so they were called in, and no one saw it. (Of course, because it didn't happen.) After about an hour, the principle told her it wasn't nice to lie and she had to appologize to me. She said, "I'm sorry Marilyn. I told a lie." I was so distraught and sick, I went to the bathroom and cried my eyes out. But, worse than that incidence...in '95, my husband fired a deckhand. To make a long story short, to get back at him, the deckhand got his girlfriend to say that her children had been out to our place, here on the bayou....we didn't live here at the time, and my husband had molested them. They filed charges...filled out a report several pages long that said they were out here every weekend for 6 weeks, swimming nude in the bayou and riding horses. No one rides my horses...not even me. They aren't broken. Even tho our place is remote...there is a lot of boat traffic on the bayou in the summer. This is MY place...at the time, my husband hardly ever came out here because he was working, but I was here every day. We didn't even know the woman or the kids. Later they tried to recant, but the charges couldn't be dropped. It took 15 months and cost us $60,000. Now, if that won't give you a sorry outlook on the human race, nothing will.

After you oil them, don't forget to cut some scrap fabric to clean any stray drops of oil.

Oil my scissors? LOL

I have an old pair of pinking shears that belonged to my grandmother who died before I was born, so who knows how old these things are. They weigh about five pounds! I've never been able to cut with them, but I thought it might be a left handed thing. Maybe they just need a bit of oil.

I was going to suggest WD-40 also. It works wonders on all kinds of things.

I put a drop of sewing machine oil under my rotary blades all the time, but I have never thought about oiling my scissors.

Marti, I hade to smile about the W-D 40 and Duct tape. Sounds like you might live at my house.
We have found , however, that a silicone spray (you purchase it just like W-D 40) works and does not leave the residue that W-D 40 leaves.
Clue.., thanks for the suggestion. I did try it on an older pair of sissors and voila-they are better.

Good advice! Guess I will have to set aside about an hour tonight to oil 6 pairs of pinking shears and 5 or 6 pairs of scissors.

No - no one needs that many pairs of pinking shears....they just all found their way into my home. LOL!

YES WD-40 will work on sissors too. To funny I told mom how much better my pinking shears was cutting she says maybe I need to oil mine too.

Every few months I use wax or WD40 on my shower curtain rod to make the hooks slide easier sure has saved me many many curtains since I started doing that. Even plain old Pledge dust spray works for that too. Takes all of 5 seconds to do.

Scissors???? What are those??? Oh,yeah,,,those were before rotary blades....lol!!!

Hmmm. Maybe I'll try that. And then I'll use the "sword" style knife sharpener on the blades. I also have a sharpening stone.

Clueless, Thanks for posting this tip! I've NEVER lubed my scissors before. Tonight was a 1st...with WD40. My pinkers showed the most improvement in feel (but still need to be sharpened). My nice Ginghers are very secure around the screw, so not much helped those.

2 in 1 process.....Degunk your gooey, sticky scissors at the same time!

I spoke with my mechanical engineer husband about this last night. "Is there any difference between oil and WD-40 when reconditioning scissors?"

Apparently, the WD-40 is only for de-gunking. It will remove that gummy, dusty stuff that gets in the crevices. Oil is for actual lubrication of metal parts rubbing together. It cushions the action of the scissors.

It is a lot like using shampoo and conditioner on your hair. One cleans, one protects. WD-40 is like the shampoo. Oil is like the conditioner.

Ya learn something new every day.
