....talking manicure and pedicure...

I need realistic suggestions on ways to stop nailbiting...excessive nailbiting I mean! The only time in my life I've had any success was the constant expense of nail tips, fill ins every two weeks and then a terrible fungus infection! I can't bear to wear my beautiful wedding rings since they draw attention to your hands and then of course my pitiful looking nails.

and I thought it was so hard to quite smoking....that was nothing compared to trying to stop this vice!

Sorry to read that you are having so much trouble with this (my DH also does it). I remember someone telling me about some peppery substance you apply to the nail that tastes awful. Have you spoken to a pharmacist? Maybe there is something you can paint on that will discourage you.

I bit my nail until I was in my 30s. Like you, I didn't wear jewelry; it would only call attention to my ugly nails. I bought a nail kit and gave myself a manicure very week, Also, bought a clear polish that hardened my nails called Nail Tek from a nail solon. I put a coat of this hardener on everyday for a week, then removed it and started over. Good luck. Gosh, if you can quit smoking you can quit anything.

I will answer the qusestions asked but need to let you know I am a manicurist at an upscale salon. #1 No. I don't worry because I know how the manicurists I work with clean not only the spa but their instruments. That being said not everyone cleans according to Government standards. #2 A seal or other sign does not guarantee your salon is clean. I have had customers tell me they went to a "cheapo" salon (her words not mine) and watched the manicurist put a clean sign on a spa tub she had only wiped out with a towel. #3 Now about the web site. You can clean a spa before you have it tested but there is no guarantee it is being done after each client. Where I live I have been in the business for 15 years. I have only one time seen someone from State Board. Not sure there is a straight forward answer to this problem. When you visit the salon look around. What is the general cleanliness of the salon in general? I work on referrals. My clients know table is clean. They see me get clean towels for each client. They see me clean my implements and the spa. We do not take 1 client out of the spa and put another in before it is cleaned properly,which takes a little time. The requirements for cleaning the spa is posted in my salon and after each client we record that it was cleaned and how. This is available for all our clients if they want to see it. As far as contamination from polish if that was true State Board would require a separate bottle for each application. There is nothing in writing about this from State Board. I think we should all be concerned about this situation but I think we can make good choices if we investigate the salon we want to visit.

I've been doing my own toes for years. Last year I decided that I'd get a pedicure at the beginning of the summer every year. Just went last week. Didn't turn out that great. They didn't file them evenly as I hoped they would, and they talked me into a mani (just $5 they kept saying) which lasted all of about three days before it started wearing down. I'll probably stick to doing it myself from now on. I can do my own toes easily and never really bother with my fingers. I do agree to wear flip flops. If you wear sandals other than flip flops, make sure that all toenails are visible. I have lots of sandals where my little toe is sort of buried under the straps, and that would smudge that toe. I also do bring my own polish. I wear nothing but sandals and open toed shoes from April to at least September and longer -- I live in Houston and the weather stays warm. I usually do my toes once a week on Sunday. Old color off, new color on. Pinks and reds. I don't do blues or greens or other colors. But I've seen them all on fingers and toes of friends and acquaintances. As far as I can tell, anything goes. Today someone came into work with pink toes with a silver criss cross pattern. It looked really cool. You'd have to have a steady hand for that!

When you have girls in this day and age these sorts of question are a non stop tension. Many girls are getting manicures/hair dyed/ear-rings/nose rings etc. 9 might be a tish young but probably not tomorrow. #1 I take issue with the sexualization of young girls. Nails/make up etyc. anything to do with making them look older or "desirable" is WRONG prepubescent IMHO. #2 The money--discretionary money we throw at kids would literally FEED a village. #3 What's next? This is a slippery slope and where will the mother in question STOP with her daughter? If she does her nails at 9 what will they do at 16 to celebrate growing up or 17 for Prom???? #4 Dying hair/doing nails are TEMPORARY but tats/piercings are permanent and there is a case to be made to stick to temporary adornments while they are underage. With my own I deflected the 'please please can we can we' with "These are adult activities and when you are an adult you can decide if the money is worth it". But back to the question--from jr. high on I spent HOURS doing my own nails. They were long and I loved BRIGHT polish. So I will go with 14 minimum for 'professional manicure'

We are supposed to see two of our most favorite bands, Ghost and Mastodon, in Asheville on Sunday. I should be testing negative by then and DH stays clear. Speaking of manicures, was going to get a mani-pedi last weekend or this week but that can’t happen. Nini, my salon does the SNS but I’ve never tried it. My students, of course, all have the daggers. SeattleMCM, I read that somewhere that overly done nails is one of the things that identifies you as an American during travel.

Years ago I used that nasty tasting stuff you paint on...it broke me in a week!It was gross tasting. You might try some of those. I tried a few before I found the worst one :O)

I did it as a kid, but when I thought how filthy under the fingernails had to be, I quit. ICK. Easier than to quit smoking.

I was a nail biter. I started giving myself weekly manicures/nail polish. I also started daily calcium tablets which eventually hardened my nails. That worked.

As a kid, my parents used the nasty tasting stuff and I quickly found that I could just use my teeth and bite away...I didn't activate my taste buds.

Just don't substitute another vice!

I have never been a nail biter but I would think it is a habit,much like any other habit.Maybe it would help to,instead of chewing on your nails,chew a piece of gum until the urge to chew the nails passes? If it is triggered by stress or nerves maybe take up a hobby of some kind that would relieve the stress.I think,as has already been mentioned,giving yourself a manicure and using a pretty polish might help.Your nails don't have to be long to look pretty.Buffing them every day also helps them to grow.
I always had long,strong nails but as I have gotten older they have become brittle and break easily.I have a hard time getting them to grow beyond the tip of my fingers anymore but I keep them manicured and polished with a neutral colored polish.For a long time I was like you,too self conscious to wear my rings but decided it didn't matter if they were long or short and started putting polish on and wearing all of my pretty rings that had been sitting in my jewelry box for so long.
