4-year old apple tree vs. 4-year old peach tree
Comments (10)HI J, I have 3 peach trees. All have fruited in 2-3 years. I did not really amend the soil except for adding some top soil to fill the holes because I did not have enough native soil to put back. In my areas, rocks grow best. Rocks and boulders are everywhere when you dig a hole. I've fertilized the tree a bit in the spring each of the following years. I don't want to fertilize too much. If I were you, I'd get rid of competing weed around each tree and mulch it. Your apple tree looks stunted. A 3 yrs old apple tree should not look like that even in your type of soil. Not sure why, but you may want to consider relocating it. The soil in my yard is also land fill. The trees still grow decently. As for apple fruiting, I have apple trees that have fruited in 2nd and 3rd year on semi-dwarf rootstocks. My Honey Crisp is on an unknown rootstock. It must be at least 6 years old now but still have not fruited. My guess is it's on a standard rootstock which will take much longer. Make sure you have another variety of apple that blooms about the same time to cross pollinate. If there are crab apple trees in your neighborhood, you'd be all set....See More70 year old woodwork and 50 year old hubby
Comments (3)The first thing to do is STOP. Re-eavaluate your goals on the project. Washing and sanding to a dull finish is required when painting over varnish. That is, if you want a long lasting, durable bond. Washing with Dirtex will clean away the dirt and grime (and there is some)and also do some deglossing. A light sanding with #180 sandpaper (aluminum oxide) will create a dull, open surface to which the primer can quickly bond to. Wash first, sand second. A high quality, Acrylic blocking primer will hide the dark stain. Have the primer tinted toward the finsh paint colors. After primer is dry, caulk all unsightly gaps and seams. That will create a seamless finish between trim and wall. Two coats, properly applied, (not thin) will cover well. Be sure you're using the highest quality, 100% Acrylic Latex paint, that you can afford. There is no short-cut to a quality paint job. When it comes to trim, you want to be able to stand back and say, "that's a very nice finish", not just, "well, the color is different". :) Michael...See MoreSleepover activities with a five year old and a seven year old
Comments (50)Robo, it sounds like you had fun! I missed this post so I'm glad you gave an update. Mayflowers, thank you so much for the colored salt jar idea. That can be one of the crafts I do with my grandsons next time we do a sleepover. My DGSs spent the night last night. I got out my markers, colored pencils, oil pastels, graphite pencils and an assortment of papers. While they were working on their drawings I was playing music. My oldest DGS asked if it was Beethoven. As soon as they were finished with their project they had out their iPads and were listening to Whip NaeNae. I videoed the oldest DGS doing the dance and we sent it and pictures of their artwork to Mom. Bedtime is still a problem with the boys, they are only fifteen months apart and they pick on each other unmercifully at bedtime. I'm going to order a cot bunk bed for them as the second queen size inflatable mattress bit the dust....See MoreAre thirty year mortgages ever ok
Comments (37)peaceofmind- Thanks for sharing that wonderful story. I spent quite a few years working as a liaison between my office and several Native American tribes, and I have sympathy for how tribes want to try to preserve what little is left of their heritage, culture, and family life. And I also know how hard it is for our dominant culture to try to understand and deal with this, especially when it looks like tribes are not availing themselves of what we consider "better" options. I'm not taking sides, and I'm not idealistic about this, as I had many challenging times trying to work through mutually agreeable solutions with tribal members. However, I am glad you got the outcome you did and that, in the end, it all worked out for your family and the girls. Based on my own experience, I can only say that everyone must have done an impressive job of convincing the tribes to agree with the adoption going forward and get the result you did. That doesn't happen unless you convince a tribe that you are a person of integrity and trust, and that doesn't happen easily or quickly. I'm sure part of this is the tribe having assurance that the girls will still be connected to their siblings...See Morerafor
