OT - Bad weather in your area?

I've been watching the Weather Channel and everytime they mention a city, I think of quilters I know who live in the area. Please let us know how things are in your area. Please stay safe.....they even recommend wearing helmets!

We're getting downpours with chance of thunderstorms tonight. Flood watch in effect through the night.

Funny, I do that same thing, too, Sharon!

There are so many areas tonight that have extremely high chance of tornadoes. Like Sharon says, please stay safe and take every precaution!

None of the newscasters have correctly predicted the frosty night in Davis. They were unable to forecast the extent of fog due to colder air above the Sacramento Valley. Colder air aloft means the inversion layer may not form, which is normally required for the fog we get in the Sacramento Valley. They went with a forecast of patchy fog and frost in the coldest locations. The local newscasters in Sacramento are a joke for a large city. Double the joke for those that do the weather, but then TV weathercasters in California are generally clueless. I get my information from the NWS, and various weather models available on the internet.

Hi Poochella! And Plantlady! Poochella you wrote; A good reminder of Mother Nature's fickle ways Jim. And yes indeed she can be! You also asked: Why do people even LIVE in Buffalo NY? It gets hit more times each winter than I can even count. Yes they do get hit quite hard at times with whats known as Lake Effect Snow but Syracuse tops them by far and coming off Lake Ontario rather than Buffalos Lake Erie. I lived in Syracuse for 32 years and now live 6 miles east whereas this 6 miles can make a great difference in amounts of snow that can be gotten living so close to the Thruway as this is considered a boundary line for heavy Lake Effect. Plus after the LE passes we get hit with a Northerly backlash coming off the Ocean as the Low moves away. Heres something to ponder over when thinking about snowfall and Buffalo: Syracuse is known for its snowfall. With 115.6 inches (293.6 cm) average,1. [3] the Syracuse metro area receives more snow on average than any other large city in the United States.[4] Research has even shown that Syracuse is the snowiest large city in the world.[5] Syracuse continually wins the Golden Snowball Award, among Upstate cities. Its record so far is 192.1 inches (487.9 cm). The high snowfall is a result of the fact that the city receives both lake effect and nor'easter snow. Snow most often falls in small (about 1-3 inches/2-8 cm), almost daily doses, over a period of several days. Larger snowfalls do occur from time-to-time, and even more so in the northern suburbs. One notable blizzard was the Blizzard of 1993, during which 42.9 inches (109 cm) fell on the city within 48 hours, with 35.6 inches (90.4 cm) falling within the first 24 hours. Syracuse received more snow than any other city in the country during this storm, which shattered a total of eight local records, including most the snow in a single snowstorm.[6] Ironically, virtually no snow fell during the Blizzard of 2006, where the Catskills and New York City saw over two feet (60 cm) of snow fall in about one day. Poochella! Despite these Winter facts we have some of the most beautiful scenic land and Spring and Summer weather that can be offered, except for 2006. And with the Finger Lakes that are stunning and picturesque that produce some of the best wines in the world, and they are only a few miles away. And Plantlady just as a side note to your saying "Some people say dahlias are hard to grow??? Just throw em on the compost pile - its as easy as that! As I was preparing to put this years tubers to bed, I reached into one of the large boxes to pull out some of the peat moss. I was surprised to see some white growth that was coming from a tuber I overlooked and was the box last in late March or early April. The growth was curly-cued and probably at least 6 feet long. It was hard for me even to believe it could have lasted that many months on its own extraordinary ability to want to survive and grow. I just heard that it's headed in a straight line towards New Orleans, which means we will get the wind and rain here in Panama City, Fl., but not the 75 m.p.h. straight-line winds and sea surges that had been predicted - thank you, LORD! I have everything as secured as I can, but have not put up the hurricane shutters YET - will wait until tomorrow afternoon to see what develops. If there is a warning from our Tallahassee weather center, then I'll get them up. I am praying for all of the folks on the NW side of Florida - GOD be with all of us!

dedtired, I checked out Dukestown and found that is part of the old iron working town of Tredegar in Monmouthshire, probably so called after the then local land owner the Dukes of Beaufort. Today the place does not have much going for it after all the closures of the mines and heavy industry. A run-down area of high unemployment with all the problems that brings. However the countryside to the North, known as the Brecon Beacons, is very beautiful in a rugged sort of way, with farms in the lowlands, lots of streams and small rivers, tiny villages and lonely farm houses. You can read about the general area in the fiction of Alexander Cordell; the best known is The Rape of the Fair Country set in the time of the Industrial Revolution. In this area of South Wales there are a series of 'valleys' running generally from N to S. The roads follow the same pattern as do the narrow rows of houses. The people seem to have little contact with their fellows in the next valleys to the E or W. It used to be a place of gaunt-looking chapels for a Sunday, Male Voice Choirs and brass bands. And the women rule the roost! The Tredegar/Dukestown valley is the 'Sirhowy' named after the river which runs through it. Here is a link that might be useful: info on Cordell and the area.

I was outside much of the afternoon and we had some wind, but nothing bad.

I was just watching the news and it was all around us, really bad weather.

We have had some wind and rain at my house, but there has been hail and tornadoes in the area. Schools were dismissed early, so I had to leave work early to keep the grands till SonIL got off work. Any excuse to leave work this week.

We are expecting 60mph winds tonight with heavy rain. Pretty calm out right now but I am sure it is on the way because the dog is very restless.

Mary, Isn't that wild how animals give us a heads-up? There must be a lot of stories out there on this subject from the recent storms.

East TN was rockin' and rollin' all day. Several tornadoes and damage everywhere. I am safe, no damage and didn't lose power which is very unusual. We had a storm with rotation go right over where I work in downtown Knoxville. That was a little freaky because I work on the top floor in a building made of glass surrounded by tall buildings made of glass!

I was able to work in the yard and plant things and pull weeds all afternoon yesterday.
The news last night reported late afternoon storms for us. The thunder and lightening started at 10AM and I put out the candles. Starting this early we will prob loose electricity.
Mary ask your dog aboout our weather lol!
Rebecca I worked in a similar building in Orlando, I was on the top floor and we could see the hits the lightening rods took. SCARY!!

I hope everyone is OK! We had rain all day yesterday and all night. No damage in our area, but, watching the Savannah news just and hour away they had a lot of damage. We were lucky!

Rebecca, that storm you saw passed on to Murphy, NC and did damage the Walmart, Big Lots, WKRK radio station antena and Wayne's Feed store also. Our little cabin is ok and the NC neighbors there are ok. One large tree came down and they got it cut up and toted off so the gal could use her driveway. Glad there were no injuries! Our friend in Blue Ridge, GA said it was quite a night Fri. She used her nervous energy to hem 4 pairs of jeans until 2 am!
Our quilt group sent emails and kept in touch with each other with reports. They are safe.
This Sun. morn. in Orl. we were pelted with winds and rains. Scary.

I'm in East Tennessee near Rebecca, and no damage where I'm at either. A lot nearby, though. Very scary. Sharon, my dh tries to put our horses in the barn if we know hail is possible. They usually stay in the pasture, but like to be out of the elements when it's really bad. Glad to hear everyone is OK.

Gwen, I was waiting for the wind and rain, but it never came. I was hoping the leaves would blow away....or at least to the back of the house. lol

Robbi, Good idea about the horses. Hail can be very damaging. Years ago, one of my girls had her vehicle totaled and my sister's newly bought house had so much siding damage done by hail, it had to be replaced.

I wonder......has the weather always been this violent and destructive? Or, does the internet and immediate access to weather reports and media coverage make it seem like the destructive weather patterns are more wide spread and frequent?

I cringe and have a hard time wrapping my mind around the tornadoes. I hope everyone is safe. I feel horrible for those who have lost their homes, and towns, friends and family.
