bad bad weather forecast

Well, it was very weird this morning as I walked my dog through the greenbelt walkways of our neighborhood. All of the lawn and top of the hedges were frosted. I thought only my backyard, but it is more widespread even as I dropped off my kids to school, all ther front lawns that I see along the way were frosted over.

None of the newscasters have correctly predicted the frosty night in Davis. And I watched them as late as 1:00 am early morning. That's a mere 5 hours lead time, they should be able to predict the trend with all those gizmos they have.

The weird thing is that it was also very foggy in our neighborhood, and this was predicted by the weather casters. I myself have "common sense" rule that if there is fog, then there will be no frost. But this event happened. It was very clear that night, crystal clear, and so the grasses frosted over come early morning. Then a slight breeze blew over the Yolo Bypass, and send off the fog hovering over the waters straight into Davis like the invading Mongols they are. So we have both frost and thick fog in the morning.

Yes! When I saw the frost I freaked! I hadn't done anything to protect my tropicals.... luckily for me, there was no fog and the sun had warmed up the plants, hopefully quickly enough for less damage.... GRRRRR! I had just moved them away from the house due to incipient stuccoing...

I'm in the SF Bay Area, and on KGO radio in the afternoons, Lloyd Lindsay Young broadcasts the weather reports. He mentioned frost yesterday in the colder parts of the bay area, so I knew to go out and start my car a few minutes early this morning.

I've heard that Mr. Young is on TV in your area, is he available for you to watch? I've found him to be unusually accurate, and he usually warns when we need to protect our plants.

The heavy rains and winds started around 3PM. Red Salvia is laying on the ground and tithonia is snapped at ground level. Keep reminding myself people have it much worse with loss of property and even lives so it's not the end of the world if the nectaring bunch have to use staked up zinnias to eat! Last 2 chrysalides I brought into garage are getting very dark. Just checked forecast for tomorrow (Sunday) and sun should be out by later in afternoon. After seeing more than a few eclose I know what the chrysalis looks like a day before...and they're going to pop tomorrow. Gotta get them dried out and ready to fly as soon as the sun appears tomorrow. If they aren't ready during that sunny window before nightfall I'll have to "sponge feed" them until Monday when it's weather forecast is all clear. It just occurred to me that I haven't worried about the power going out or some of the Chinese Wisteria choked trees coming down like last storm but it's the Monarchs I've been concentrating on since last night...LOL. Come on, Tracey, spill about what plants you got on clearance at Lowe's! :) I need to get my behind out to nurseries and garden centers to see what I can find on clearance that I won't kill over winter if I don't get to do the 24" deep amending thing again in less than ideal soil/drainage conditions even though I did that last fall. What does this clay want from me...LOL.

I don't mind it a little interesting, but I prefer that it stays just this side of dangerous. I love to watch lighting. I get disappointed when the storms just miss us... like they did today. We got rain and some wind gusts, but nothing serious. Today I was glad of that, really, because I was out and about. We don't have a basement either. I grew up in Ohio and as a young child was affected by tornadoes three times. I have vivid memories of being carried from our mobile home by a fireman down a hill and under the bridge of train tracks. When we came back, most of the homes on our street of the mobile home park were turned upside down. Ours was the only one standing! I was maybe 5 y/o. Still, it doesn't scare me. The opposite, I take it in stride. We had a friend of DS's spend the night once when the tornado siren went off. In the blink of an eye he was in the back of our coat closet in a ball, while the rest of us were just waiting and watching the news. We didn't even realize it, just looked around wondering where he went. Oh, it was too funny! He was 13! We were laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes! Never let him forget it. It's still funny to think about. He is a big, strong kid, too. Football and baseball player... the kind who's not afraid of anything. LOL!

Dang, this midwest weather! I am so looking forward to my week in CA just lounging around a pool, eating lots of fresh seafood, fresh fruit and veggies and raw oysters. I guess I better keep my fingers crossed that I don't encounter an earthquake there. A friend keeps teasing me that I brought bad weather to Iowa when I moved here. I have experienced floods, ice storms, blizzards and tornado warnings in the past two and half years I have been here.

I like wood stoves, too: the quick and intense heat; the sensory aspect, that you hear and see and even smell a wood stove; we also use ours to dry clothes and heat bricks and sometimes food or water. A wood stove has a presence; it's a hearth for the home in a way no radiator can ever be. That said, they're polluting, not to mention labor-intensive and messy. There's a symmetry to all this: significance requires work, and brings disorder with it. We have just one stove, in our living room, which means that we all get cozy in cold weather. Perhaps it's just that DH, DD, and I get along anyway, but I think it helps that we spend our hours at home together in this small space, talking, sharing the books we're reading and what we're seeing on our computers. I must say it helped when DD got earphones and I didn't have to listen to her and DH's music for hours on end. Bart, I get you about wanting to get out to the garden, and I hope your turn comes soon! Fortunately for me mine is right here, and even when my cold was worse than now I could step out now and then when temperatures were mild and prune the wisteria on the pergola in front of the house. Yesterday we had an amazing miraculous day of decent weather. I was out for several hours (wow), shearing weeds, digging out a patch of Bermuda grass, pruning the Teas, that needed it badly, tidying an orange peel clematis. Which may not be very comforting to you, but sickness does end one day, and so does bad weather. I wonder if, when the weather does finally improve, we may not suddenly get well? I have a notion these stubbornly prolonged illnesses are linked to the cold and dreary conditions of these last weeks. Possibly to an excess of indoor life, too.

I had a low of 32 here in So. Cal. Matching a 32 in Nov. for the lowest of the year. I didn't protect my plants either as I had been the past two days of lighter frosts. I couldn't believe it, my snap, shelling and sweet peas all suffered damage. They were just blooming too. Weather is one of those unpredictable things.

I really considered posting yesterday morning at about 5am as my husband left for work, but I figured that either it was too late at that point, or no one would read the post until it was too late. We had to water down the windows in the car to melt the rather thick ice that had formed.

I was expecting close to freezing temps, but not such a thick layer and certainly not accompanied by fog! Crazy!

None of the newscasters have correctly predicted the frosty night in Davis.

They were unable to forecast the extent of fog due to colder air above the Sacramento Valley. Colder air aloft means the inversion layer may not form, which is normally required for the fog we get in the Sacramento Valley. They went with a forecast of patchy fog and frost in the coldest locations.

The local newscasters in Sacramento are a joke for a large city. Double the joke for those that do the weather, but then TV weathercasters in California are generally clueless. I get my information from the NWS, and various weather models available on the internet.

Forecast said the low would be 41-degrees today, Saturday, in Agoura Hills, CA (30 miles north of LA). Wrong!! It was 29.8 degrees at 7 a.m., and still only 33.2 degrees at 8:30 a.m. Agapanthus are mush! Sixty-six degrees with sun and breeze now however at 3:30 p.m.

Here in Camarillo we've had temps down to about 35 or 36 degrees a few times. Cold enough for light frost on roofs and lawns, but not enough to damage anything apart from truly tropical plants.

I tend to agree with Toyon about the local weather forecasters. Sometimes, however, they do get it right, but then the weekend rolls around, and they don't even bother to update their websites.

I usually go by the info on the NWS site, as well. Unfortunately, on the morning in question, they predicted a low of 39, and from the amount of frost we received, I'd say it was more along the lines of 29 (at least).

Oh, well. It's a science, but not a perfect one.

The weather guy on channel 11 news in the Bay Area, John Farley, is actually pretty good and usually fairly accurate.

What is the NWS site?
