roman shades or bamboo wood shades

I really love these roman shades from PB but my windows are 80" in height and PB only goes to 72"...has anyone seen an alternative?

also, what about bamboo wood shades? can you recommend some good quality nice looking ones that don't cost an arm and a leg? on a budget...

I have seen these roman shades at PB and I love them too. However, I never lower the shades I keep them at a certain fold and keep them there. But I don't need privacy really.
My windows are nine feet feet at least so I couldn't lower them. But in my previous house I had several roman shades with smaller windows and never lowered them there. Do you just want them for looks or for privacy or both?

I did use Bamboo shades and they use to be so cheap at Pier I, gosh years ago. The price must be higher now as everything else is.

Be careful with the PB shades. They do not have the mechanism to hold the shades at different heights; you must use a cleat attached to the window frame to hold the cord used to lower/raise the shade. No where on the web site does it say this :(. Since I bought one for a window (middle one) with no frame I cannot use it. I also feel these shades are inferior in the construction: plastic rings, staples in the front of the shades to hold the fabric to the frame. Of course I bought some on clearance and could not return them. Before you buy make sure you check them out in the store. The ones I purchased were not in stores.

For cheaper wovens I bought from JC Penny the ones linked below. I really like them. They are tightly woven and you cannot see through them. Not lined, but also not expensive. I got mine from the store. Don't know if the sizes are right for you but check them out!

marcolo, that's the plan!! athomeinva, they can look chunky pulled up, but on these small window... not so much! Wood blinds are definitely classic and period appropriate! thanks everyone.. all the responses have been very, very helpful! We have been living in the house for over a month now, and living here is what really finalized my choice. I see I need some light control as well as privacy - yet I do want to be able to pull them up - if I desire (I may not even feel I need to). I usually sacrifice function over looks... but in this case, I am picking function over what I desired for looks! I'll post pictures when blinds go up!

Plain bamboo shades might as well not be there at night when the light is on. Folks can't see in during the day when they are closed, but at night when they are back lit, practically see-through. I know this from personal experience. I tried bamboo shades in my living room that faced the street, and checked out the level of see through from the street at night. Not private at all. These were unlined ones.

We also haven’t quite figured out how to decorate so if we go with Roman shades, these shades probably won’t get picked out for another year, probably. It's hard to tell from just one photo, but at least some of your windows are very close to the wall, which would make curtains an odd-looking, difficult choice without adequate room for stacking back the curtains on the side so that they don't cover up too much of the window when the curtains are open. I'd probably go with Roman shades, but definitely decorate the room and live in the house for at least a few months before you decide. Window coverings of any sort aren't cheap.

Use solar shades then you keep the view even on really sunny days . I really dislike woven wood shades to me they always look like cheap bamboo shades and always block the view. I use solar shades for Steves blinds and have never had an issue. Go with 10% and in dark color to get the best view out of them

Thanks newdawn for the info on the pb shades...i'll also take a look at pier1 but i think they prob won't have my window size...i'll take a look...thanks for the rec!

Bebe - I def need the shades to hold at diff heights so thanks so much for that info! I really do like those woven ones at JCP and what a great price! Unfortunately, they only go to 72" whereas all of my windows are 82" :( Thanks again for the recs!
