You can also use one of adblock's subscription lists (follow instructions when you download--very easy and free) and never see any ad on the internet ever again! It's a miracle, I tell you. Yay, firefox.

Um... the green ads are IN your post - is that because I'm using Safari
and NOT Firefox? Is it on the VIEWER's end?

Hmmmm...did that and still have the green hyperlink ads. The filters are there and say they're enabled. I restarted my computer. Did I miss something?

I don't find the in-text ad links to be annoying now that I know they're not links put in by the poster. I figure the GW forums must be expensive to maintain and could disappear if some advertising revenue could not be generated. We all whine when the search function doesn't work or old posts are missing, but I don't see anyone volunteering to pay for these functions, either. The text-links sure beat pop-up ads.

Roughly, gardenweb inserts a script that gets your computer to give the text to a third party who puts in the underlining. Your computer displays the underlined text.

It's easier and safer to opt out of the mean greenies by using the link that appears at the bottom of every page called Click Here to learn more about in-text links ....

This cheat (procedure below) isforpeople who can't do that for one reason or another. You'll need to have administrator level access - so if this is a work computer, you are probably out of luck. It kinda changes the address of the third party to your own computer, so no changes are made.

If you use internet explorer, you need to do something slightly different. Hit Start-Run copy or type the text below into the box:

notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add this line to the bottom. You can copy this one:

127.0.0.1 intermix.us.intellitxt.com

Hit the X for close, it will ask you if you want to save the file - say yes. You might have to restart.

I just ran Firefox and followed these instructions, added the asterisk things, restarted, etc. etc. And I'm still getting the links. Plus, now I'm getting extra windows with ads that this site spins off. I don't understand why nothing is working. Is this because I'm on a Mac?

I use google chrome on my pc laptop, tried following the GW link to dismantle, but still get it too! I'm doing my best to ignore it...

Firefox isn't my friend in this case - the greenies are still appearing even after adding and configuring Adblock.

Update - I had opted out earlier and that also didn't work. Though it said disabled, they weren't. I just tried it again though using the link that appears after you post - and now it worked. This is actually with IE as I'm on my computer at work.

Ads can be a problem for many reasons. We just got a major malware infection from our local online newspaper. They published an article acknowleging that they'd spread the malware unknowingly through one of their advertisers. It was nasty to get rid of - someone I know finally had to just scrub their PC entirely and reinstall.

If you've just installed some kind of ad blocking software, you also have to clean out your cookies and your cache. Just restarting won't always do it.

If you're on your own computer you can also add a minder like Lavasoft's AdAware.

I don't understand why they put in annoying ads. You'd think they'd want to sell more eyeballs rather than selling more ad blocking software. Sigh.

Me too! I'd tried to opt out before (didn't work), but went through the link at the bottom of this page. Opted out again, and now all the greenies are gone! Woohoo!

Thanks, I'm going to try again. The one fix I tried, noscript something or other from Firefox, screwed up the formatting of another website I frequent so that wasn't a good fix at all.

riverspots, you must have missed earlier threads where people posted that they'd rather pay a prescription cost than have these annoying ads. But frankly, I have zippo interest in paying a prescription rate for a website that goes on the fritz as often as this one does. They need to get their #$%# together first.

So I went to the link at the bottom of the page as you suggested, bmorepanic, and this time, miracle of miracles, the disable selection worked! It didn't last time. Or maybe it did and then it didn't? Eh, I could be celebrating too soon.

Forgot to add, riverspots, that the text-links become pop-up ads if your mouse accidentally hovers near them. Very annoying.

I use Firefox with adblock, without fiddling with the settings, and I've wondered all along about what everyone was talking about in connection with the green links.
